Book Does E Governance Bring Accountability in Rural Local Administration in Bangladesh

Download or read book Does E Governance Bring Accountability in Rural Local Administration in Bangladesh written by Mohammad Hamiduzzaman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local government institutions are the cornerstones of democracy. The central government reaches its remotest citizens through local government institutions and vice versa. On the other hand, in order to deliver need-driven services to citizens in an efficient and effective manner and to be participant and responsive, local government institutions need to be self-governed or democratic. A democratic or self-governed local government not only improves the immediate living conditions of people, but also leads to more equitable relationships in the society, which is a prerequisite for sustainable socio-economic development and poverty reduction.

Book Reforming Urban Governance in Bangladesh

Download or read book Reforming Urban Governance in Bangladesh written by Pranab Kumar Panday and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of the urban government system in Bangladesh, focusing on its upper tier, the City Corporation (CC), and the institutional and legal frameworks within which it operates. Along with a discussion of the scale and magnitude of urbanization, the book presents a comprehensive analysis of the reform agendas of CCs including their functional assignments, local political leadership, local control over administration and service delivery, local fiscal autonomy and local financial management, and local participation and accountability mechanisms. Very few efforts have been taken to analyze the comprehensive reform agenda required to make the CCs effectively discharge their duties and responsibilities in the context of Bangladesh. This book therefore not only fills this gap in the literature, but also provides recommendations on each reform agenda.

Book Rural Education in Bangladesh

Download or read book Rural Education in Bangladesh written by M. Mokammel Haque and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a land of extreme rural poverty and illiteracy, Bangladesh needs to consciously promote, develop, and support local institutions and participatory leadership, involving local people in the planning, development, and implementation of developmental policies. Begun in 1959, the Comilla experiment constitutes the rationale for institutional planning, emphasizing local planning participation via local organizations, governments, and co-operatives working with governmental agencies that supply training and materials. Depending heavily upon systematized nonformal training programs, the Comilla experiment identified, trained, and educated natural rural leaders to act as change agents. Bangladesh's formal education system has traditionally emphasized the humanities, producing"gentlemen" contemptuous of labor and virtually unskilled. As the biggest institutional framework in Bangladesh, the formal school system has a great potential for providing basic education at the primary level and for "vocationalizing" secondary education. However, the immediate needs of literacy and production suggest that Bangladesh focus upon a strategy for nonformal education that includes: multisectoral community action programs; decentralized planning and implementation; a national policy to coordinate activities; integrated development; self-reliant financing; maximum use of existing institutions and resources; research and evaluation; and target specific priorities. Book Strengthening Local Governance in Bangladesh

Download or read book Strengthening Local Governance in Bangladesh written by Shuvra Chowdhury and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impact of Bangladesh's Local Government Act of 2009 on the functioning of the local governments or Union Parishads (UP), with a particular emphasis on people’s participation and accountability. Throughout the chapters, the authors review the existing legal framework of UP and its relation to social accountability, examine how much of the social participation is spontaneous and how much is politically induced, question the success of the Citizen's Charter and Right to Information acts as mechanisms for social accountability, and present suggestions to remedy some of the problems facing people's participation and accountability in the UP. This book fills existing gaps in the discourse by adding new information to the literature on development research and legal reforms in Bangladesh, specifically in how those legal reforms have led to strengthening or weakening people's participation in local government. The target audience for this book are students and researchers in Asian studies , international development studies, and public administration, as well as practitioners working in the local governments discussed.
