Book At the Top of the Empire

Download or read book At the Top of the Empire written by Claire Laux and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. From the 16th century, European colonization paved the way for economic and cultural globalization and for a deep social reconfiguration. As a result, at the top of the colonial societies new elites emerged that were different from those of the old continent and the indigenous elites. European elites seem to be one of the cornerstones of the colonial system. This book highlights the diversity of elites (settlers, nobilities, Creoles, civil servants, officers, etc.) and the variety of colonial situations from the 16th century to the 20th century. Neglected for a long time, the history of imperial societies gives a new slant to colonial studies. A long-term and comparative study of empires sheds light on the origins, education and mobility of elites, their way of life and relationships with metropolitan and indigenous societies. Contributions from American, Belgian, British, Canadian, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian historians allow us to rethink the issue of colonial domination through the prism of social history.

Book Empire and Military Revolution in Eastern Europe

Download or read book Empire and Military Revolution in Eastern Europe written by Brian Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of resource mobilization and devastation the wars between Russia, the Crimean Khanate and the Ottoman Empire were some of the largest of the 18th century, and had enormous consequences for the balance of power in Eastern Europe. Brian Davies examines how these conflicts characterized the course of Russian military development in response to Ottoman and Crimean Tatar threats and to determine under what circumstances and in what ways Russian military power experienced a "revolution" awarding it clear preponderance over the Ottoman-Crimean system. A central part of Davies' argument is that identifying and explaining a Military Revolution must involve examining the role of factors not purely military. One must look not only at new military technology, new force and command structure, new tactical thinking, and new recruitment and military finance practices but also consider the impact of larger demographic, economic, and sociopolitical changes.

Book Russia s Age of Silver Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Russia s Age of Silver Routledge Revivals written by Ian Blanchard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, Russia’s ‘Age of Silver’ represents a major contribution to the history of the international economy during the eighteenth century, challenging old prejudices and establishing the importance of Russian precious-metal production. Ian Blanchard examines the nature of the Central and South America specie crisis of 1670 to 1760, and the response of European precious-metal producers. He highlights the rise of the Russian copper industry to a position of world supremacy, and the Siberian gold and silver mines to ‘old world’ supremacy. The study explains why Russia experienced little inflation and why no metal was exported: the economy acted as a sponge, absorbing the flood of coins as monetary expansion was paralleled by rapid economic growth. These developments doubled average per capita incomes over the course of the century, so that between 1788 and 1807 the average Russian enjoyed an income equivalent to that of their British counterpart. Providing a comprehensive analysis, this reissue will be of particular value to students and researchers with an interest in Russian economic history.

Book Ceremonial Entries Municipal Liberties and the Negotiation of Power in Valois France 1328 1589

Download or read book Ceremonial Entries Municipal Liberties and the Negotiation of Power in Valois France 1328 1589 written by Neil Murphy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a fresh examination of the French ceremonial entry, Neil Murphy considers the role these events played in the negotiation between urban elites and the Valois monarchy for rights and liberties. Moving away from the customary focus on the pageantry, this book focuses on how urban governments used these ceremonies to offer the ruler (or his representatives) petitions regarding their rights, liberties and customs. Drawing on extensive research, he shows that ceremonial entries lay at the heart of how the state functioned in later medieval and Renaissance France.

Book Making of the West Volume II Since 1500

Download or read book Making of the West Volume II Since 1500 written by Lynn Hunt and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of Western civilization need more than facts. They need to understand the cross-cultural, global exchanges that shaped Western history; to be able to draw connections between the social, cultural, political, economic, and intellectual happenings in a given era; and to see the West not as a fixed region, but a living, evolving construct. These needs have long been central to The Making of the West. The book’s chronological narrative emphasizes the wide variety of peoples and cultures that created Western civilization and places them together in a common context, enabling students to witness the unfolding of Western history, understand change over time, and recognize fundamental relationships.
