Book excerpt: 20 years ago I landed (what I then assumed to be) the role of my life. I was entirely unprepared on the inside and cocky and proud on the outside too afraid to share any fear or insecurities. When I opened my script and read it a few times (like "they" say we should) I realized I was out of my depth and likely to fail. I was just a rooky after all with little more than a handful of acting classes under my belt. So...I did a very smart thing...I turned to a friend who had just finished her Associates degree in Theater Arts and she game me the most important tidbit of knowledge I've learned to date. Do a script analysis! Do an in-depth character analysis! Take your scenes apart step by step and do a scene analysis. WHAT? I had no clue what that was or how it could help me so I was off to the library. The library wasn't any help at all so off to the bookstore! At the bookstore I found a dusty old ignored paperback giving minimal instruction and a bunch of nonsense that would do little to help me...and I couldn't write in it! What good is a script analysis that I could not take notes in! So I found myself a niche and decided to perfect my version of a script analysis that helped me not only land roles in the future. It helped me to be a better actor with a deeper knowledge and understanding of not only the role I landed but also the storyline in general. I've since given up acting and the spotlight for the director's chair and a family but anytime I have a budding actress that is struggling with her or his role I give her one of these books....they always thank me. I think you will too.

Book Script Analysis for Theatre

Download or read book Script Analysis for Theatre written by Robert Knopf and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Script Analysis for Theatre: Tools for Interpretation, Collaboration and Production provides theatre students and emerging theatre artists with the tools, skills and a shared language to analyze play scripts, communicate about them, and collaborate with others on stage productions. Based largely on concepts derived from Stanislavski's system of acting and method acting, the book focuses on action - what characters do to each other in specific circumstances, times, and places - as the engine of every play. From this foundation, readers will learn to distinguish the big picture of a script, dissect and 'score' smaller units and moment-to-moment action, and create individualized blueprints from which to collaborate on shaping the action in production from their perspectives as actors, directors, and designers. Script Analysis for Theatre offers a practical approach to script analysis for theatre production and is grounded in case studies of a range of the most studied plays, including Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, Georg Büchner's Woyzeck, Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire, and Paula Vogel's How I Learned to Drive, among others. Readers will develop the real-life skills professional theatre artists use to design, rehearse, and produce plays.

Book Acting on the Script

Download or read book Acting on the Script written by Bruce Miller and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastery of craft depends on repetition: the more opportunities student actors have to be guided through analyzing scripts, the more likely they are to develop a reliable process for making choices when the time comes to work independently. That's why Acting on the Script contains eight short plays, which can be used independently or as parts of one full-length play, giving aspiring actors the practice they need to tell the story of the play and of their characters clearly, believably, and compellingly. With each new scene, readers are given the opportunity to think through the analysis and synthesis process independently, then they are guided clearly through that process. The first section reintroduces the basic elements of acting craft. The book then lays out how these elements relate to a script in general and then more specifically – by using a short play to illustrate the basic principles. The second section focuses on specific analysis and synthesis problems using original scenes especially composed to help students develop their analysis and choice-making skills and to address individual acting issues. The plays, already tested in classes and two productions (one professional and one college), are filled with the kinds of acting problems that beginning actors often have trouble with and need to learn to solve. In addition, specific problems that actors might have with certain types of material are addressed as well.

Download or read book Page and Stage written by Stanley Vincent Longman and published by Addison-Wesley Longman. This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Page and Stage narrows the gulf between printed page and performance to make script analysis for production or academic study more effective, efficient, and insightful. This text discusses a method for script analysis based on the idea that plays consist of "organized tension" that involves the audience and organizes their response. It examines the many forms of tension in plays--between actor and character, between the stage and the world of the play, between the present and the past, and between characters--by looking at stage space and time and a wide range of plays from Greek times to the present. Page and Stage addresses the paradox that play scripts are not complete works of dramatic art, and yet contain implicitly, if not explicitly, the intended performance.

Book Activated Script Analysis

Download or read book Activated Script Analysis written by Elizabeth Brendel Horn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activated Script Analysis engages theatre students in traditional formative script analysis through a fusion of devised theatre and various modes of creative expression, dispelling the notion of script analysis as an isolated pen-to-paper task and reimagining it as a captivating and collaborative process. This book uses diverse, contemporary plays to model the script analysis process for each of four Theatrical Elements: Given Circumstances; Character; Setting; and Structure. By considering each of these elements, readers can uncover patterns and themes within a dramatic text. Woven throughout the study of each theatrical element are "Connections": Personal Connections, which encourage readers to explore a theatrical element within their own lives, as though their lives were a script; Play Connections, which make abstract ideas presented in script analysis concrete through theatre-based play; Professional Connections, which examine how a theatre professional might analyze a script within their own work; and Performative Connections, which provide the opportunity for students to explore a theatrical element through performance using devised theatre strategies. At the end of each chapter, readers are given the opportunity to analyze a text through the lens of a Theatrical Element and to express their findings through a variety of digital, written, visual, and performance-based modes of expression. Activated Script Analysis is designed for undergraduate theatre students and educators, to be used as the primary text in Script Analysis coursework or as a supplemental text in Acting or Directing courses. The book includes access to downloadable templates and example videos, available at www.routledge.com/9781032125398.

Book excerpt: An actor's script is both a gold mine, and the map to discovering it: if properly read, a script will reveal its riches to you. Unfortunately, most actors never learn to efficiently read the map, or master how to convert what they find in a script into playable gold. Why? Because this aspect of the acting process is seldom taught in a simple and tangible way in the classroom or studio. Acting can – and should – be more than guesswork and instinct. Actor's Alchemy: Finding the Gold in Your Script examines the relationship between the script and what an actor ultimately does on the stage or on screen. Here is a straightforward guide filled with useful information to help actors learn to use their scripts in a specific and analytical way to solve the problems of the scene and bring their elusive characters to life. In learning how to decipher the script, actors will be equipped to make the choices that lead to delivering a gold performance.
