Book Adjusting Towards AFTA

Download or read book Adjusting Towards AFTA written by Jayant Menon and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1996 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision to establish the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) was initially met with widespread enthusiasm. Some of this enthusiasm has since dissipated as all countries except Singapore have voiced concerns regarding the ability of sensitive industries to compete in the new protection-free environment. Underlying these concerns is the view that the evolving pattern of trade will be more complementary, or that inter-industry of net trade will dominate intra-industry trade. This study employs a new methodology to analyse the dynamics of trade in the ASEAN countries as they approach the deadline of AFTA, with a view to identify likely adjustment costs associated with liberalizing their trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, ASEAN has shifted its focus from political and military security to economic co-operation and development. Although this change may ease the integration of the four mainland Southeast Asian nations -- Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia into ASEAN, there remain significant challenges to forge a workable and united ten-member ASEAN. This book examines many of the economic, political, and institutional issues confronting the enlarged regional grouping. The volume is organized into three sections based on the perspectives of the region, subregion, and the newer members. It not only addresses ASEAN's enlargement but also contributes to the debate on ASEAN's shifting role in the twenty-first century.

Book Economic Management and Transition Towards a Market Economy

Download or read book Economic Management and Transition Towards a Market Economy written by Anthony T.H. Chin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much attention has been focused in recent years on the transformation of the economies of Eastern and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union. However, a growing demand for policy advice, technical assistance and expertise is also coming from Asian reforming countries such as China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. In addition, business communities abroad are increasingly interested in exploring investment and marketing opportunities in these reforming countries. Such developments are too important to overlook or ignore. The transformation of socialist economies towards market-based systems entails an unusually wide range of problems. Studies of related topics are complicated by the speed of the changes and the lack of clear historical precedents. Although the structural features of Asian reforming economies are in important ways different from those of the Eastern European economies, all socialist economies share similar fundamental conditions on the eve of economic reform which raise a similar set of reform issues. This volume brings together a rich collection of expertise and information in an attempt to shed some light on the transitional process in Asia. The contributions are by no means exhaustive. However, they provide the reader and analyst with an excellent starting point to the problems and prospects which are specific to Asian transforming economies.

Book Southeast Asia s Economic Crisis

Download or read book Southeast Asia s Economic Crisis written by Heinz Wolfgang Arndt and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1999 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia is suddenly in crisis, the largest country - Indonesia - deeply so. This volume, comprising a set of specially commissioned papers, examines the origins, lessons, and future path of the crisis. Why didn't economists foresee the sudden and catastrophic events of 1997-98? How can seemingly robust and vigorous economies fall so far, so swiftly? Do we, in consequence, need to change the way we view the world? Is there anything to salvage of the "East Asian miracle"? Is Southeast Asia about to experience its own version of the "lost decade", analogous to that which afflicted much of Africa and Latin America in the 1980s?
