Book Adhesives for Wood and Lignocellulosic Materials

Download or read book Adhesives for Wood and Lignocellulosic Materials written by R. N. Kumar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a comprehensive treatment of the subject covering a wide range of subjects uniquely available in a single source for the first time. A material science approach has been adopted in dealing with wood adhesion and adhesives. The approach of the authors was to bring out hierarchical cellular and porous characteristics of wood with polymeric cell wall structure, along with the associated non-cell wall extractives, which greatly influence the interaction of wood substrate with polymeric adhesives in a very unique manner not existent in the case of other adherends. Environmental aspects, in particular formaldehyde emission from adhesive bonded wood products, has been included. A significant feature of the book is the inclusion of polymeric matrix materials for wood polymer composites.

Book Wood Adhesives

    Book Details:
  • Author : Antonio Pizzi
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2019-12-09
  • ISBN : 9780367445966
  • Pages : 462 pages

Download or read book Wood Adhesives written by Antonio Pizzi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood adhesives are of tremendous industrial importance, as more than two-thirds of wood products in the world today are completely or partially bonded together using a variety of adhesives. Adhesive bonding offers many advantages over other joining methods for wood components, and there has been a great deal of R& D activity in devising new wood adhesives or improving the existing ones. The modern mantra in all industrial sectors is: "think green, go green," which has attracted much attention in the wood adhesive industry. Therefore, there is also a lot of research activity in synthesizing environmentally benign and human-friendly wood adhesives. This book is divided into four parts: Part 1: Fundamental Adhesion Aspects in Wood Bonding; Part 2: Synthetic Adhesives; Part 3: Environment-friendly adhesives; and Part 4: Wood Welding and General Paper. It addresses many different types of wood adhesives, as well as bonding (welding) of wood components without adhesives, a more recent development. The information contained in this book is valuable for individuals engaged in all aspects of wood adhesion and adhesives and, hopefully, will inspire new ideas in wood adhesives, a topic of vital industrial importance.

Book Adhesive Bonding and Performance Testing of Bonded Wood Products

Download or read book Adhesive Bonding and Performance Testing of Bonded Wood Products written by CR. Frihart and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the importance of durable wood bonds, the factors that lead to durability are not well understood, and the internal forces exerted upon the bondline are often overlooked. Durability requires that the bonded assembly resist dimensional changes of wood with fluctuation of wood moisture levels. Both bonding and bond breaking steps need to be understood at cellular and nanoscale, in addition to the larger spatial scales normally examined. With both internal and external forces being significant, interphase and bulk adhesive properties need to be better understood. Systematic studies of the bonding process, the forces upon the bondline, and the locus of failure using different types of adhesives and wood species should improve our ability to design wood adhesives. Modifications of wood surfaces, along with spectroscopic and microscopic analyses, are important tools to understand bond formation and failure.

Book Adhesives in Building Construction

Download or read book Adhesives in Building Construction written by Us Department of Agriculture and published by Fredonia Books (NL). This book was released on 2002 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housing is the greatest single demand for wood in the United States. Projected trends show an increasing demand for wood in the years ahead to add new dwellings, replace old ones, and repair and improve existing dwellings. It is important to develop more efficient building practices, such as those provided by adhesive technology. Ideally, user needs will be supplied at a high level while at the same time our timber resources are conserved. This handbook is designed to serve as a guide to efficient use of adhesives for building construction. It is intended for architects, engineers, contractors, builders, building supply dealers, code officials, and others who may have limited experience with wood and adhesive technology. While the primary emphasis is on adhesive bonding of wood and wood-based materials to each other in light-frame construction, the handbook also includes the bonding of wood to other construction materials. Each chapter was authored by an individual or group very familiar with that particular phase of adhesive bonding.

Book Progress in Adhesion and Adhesives

Download or read book Progress in Adhesion and Adhesives written by K. L. Mittal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the 13 review articles written by subject experts and published in 2014 in the Journal Reviews of Adhesion and Adhesives. The rationale for publication of this book is that currently the RAA has limited circulation, so this book provides broad exposure and dissemination of the concise, critical, illuminating, and thought-provoking review articles. The subjects of the reviews fall into 4 general areas: 1. Polymer surface modification 2. Biomedical, pharmaceutical and dental fields 3. Adhesives and adhesive joints 4. General Adhesion Aspects The topics covered include: Adhesion of condensed bodies at microscale; imparting adhesion property to silicone material; functionally graded adhesively bonded joints; synthetic adhesives for wood panels; adhesion theories in wood adhesive bonding; adhesion and surface issues in biocomposites and bionanocomposites; adhesion phenomena in pharmaceutical products and applications of AFM; cyanoacrylate adhesives in surgical applications; ways to generate monosort functionalized polyolefin surfaces; nano-enhanced adhesives; bonding dissimilar materials in dentistry; flame treatment of polymeric materials—relevance to adhesion; and mucoadhesive polymers for enhancing retention of ocular drug delivery.

Book Phenolic Resins A Century of Progress

Download or read book Phenolic Resins A Century of Progress written by Louis Pilato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Leo Hendrik Baekeland and his development of phenol formal- hyde resins are recognized as the cornerstone of the Plastics Industry in the early twentieth century, and phenolic resins continue to ?ourish after a century of robust growth. On July 13, 1907, Baekeland ?led his “heat and pressure” patent related to the processing of phenol formaldehyde resins and identi?ed their unique utility in a plethora of applications. The year 2010 marks the Centennial Year of the prod- tion of phenolic resins by Leo Baekeland. In 1910, Baekeland formed Bakelite GmbH and launched the manufacture of phenolic resins in Erkner in May 1910. In October 1910, General Bakelite began producing resins in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Lastly, Baekeland collaborated with Dr. Takamine to manufacture phenolic resins in Japan in 1911. These events were instrumental in establishing the Plastics Industry and in tracing the identity to the brilliance of Dr. Leo Baekeland. Phenolic resins remain as a versatile resin system featuring either a stable, thermoplastic novolak composition that cures with a latent source of formaldehyde (hexa) or a heat reactive and perishable resole composition that cures thermally or under acidic or special basic conditions. Phenolic resins are a very large volume resin system with a worldwide volume in excess of 5 million tons/year, and its growth is related to the gross national product (GNP) growth rate globally.
