Book Adhesion between polymers and concrete Adh sion entre polym res et b ton

Download or read book Adhesion between polymers and concrete Adh sion entre polym res et b ton written by H. R. Sasse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites materials have aroused a great interest over the last few decades. Several applications of fibrous composites, functionally graded materials, laminated composites, nano-structured reinforcements, morphing structures, can be found in many engineering fields, such as aerospace, mechanical, naval and civil engineering. The necessity of lightweight structures, smart and adaptive systems, high-level strength, have led both the academic research and the manufacturing development to a recurring employment of these materials. Many journal papers and technical notes have been published extensively over the last seventy years in international scientific journals of different engineering fields. For this reason, the establishment of this second edition of Mechanics of Composites International Conference has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the first edition occurred in 2014 at Stony Brook University (USA). MECHCOMP wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Porto (Portugal), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.

Book Algal Biorefinery An Integrated Approach

Download or read book Algal Biorefinery An Integrated Approach written by Debabrata Das and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically discusses different aspects of algal production systems and several of the drawbacks related to microalgal biomass production, namely, low biomass yield, and energy-consuming harvesting, dewatering, drying and extraction processes. These provide a background to the state-of-the-art technologies for algal cultivation, CO2 sequestration, and large-scale application of these systems. In order to tap the commercial potential of algae, a biorefinery concept has been proposed that could help to extract maximum benefits from algal biomass. This refinery concept promotes the harvesting of multiple products from the feedstock so as to make the process economically attractive. For the last few decades, algal biomass has been explored for use in various products such as fuel, agricultural crops, pigments and pharmaceuticals, as well as in bioremediation. To meet the huge demand, there has been a focus on large-scale production of algal biomass in closed or open photobioreactors. Different nutritional conditions for algal growth have been explored, such as photoautotrophic, heterotrophic, mixotrophic and oleaginous. This book is aimed at a wide audience, including undergraduates, postgraduates, academics, energy researchers, scientists in industry, energy specialists, policy makers and others who wish to understand algal biorefineries and also keep abreast of the latest developments.

Book Marine and Industrial Biofouling

Download or read book Marine and Industrial Biofouling written by Hans-Curt Flemming and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biofouling is a costly problem, and it is encountered in a wide spectrum of technical systems, ranging from the shipping industry, power industry, water purification, automobile industry, paint and pharmaceuticals, to the microelectronics and food industries. Micro- and macroorganisms attach to surfaces and accumulate there, forming biofilms that cause interferences – a fundamentally natural process. Usually, a medical paradigm is applied: kill biofilms and the problem is solved. This leads to excessive biocide use. However, the success of this strategy is very limited; furthermore it leads to equipment damage and environmental pollution. Simply trying to kill the fouling organisms is clearly not seen as a successful strategy while cleaning is put forward as much more important. In this book, strategies to prevent adhesion, to mitigate the extent and effects of biofouling, and to detect and remove fouling layers are presented. Holistic approaches to the fouling process are elaborated, taking into account options such as nutrient limitation, repellent and easy-to-clean surfaces for fouling layer limitation, and replacing biocides with more environmentally friendly methods – in other words: learning how to live with fouling biofilms without suffering the damage they can do.

Book Fracture Mechanics and Structural Concrete

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics and Structural Concrete written by B. L. Karihaloo and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 1995-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of fracture mechanics in resolving problems in the design of concrete structures is becoming more widely accepted and utilized as current codes cannot always be applied satisfactorily to design conditions. There is wide-ranging technical literature available on the subject but to date there is no readily accessible and systematic source to meet the needs of present practitioners and future designers. Fracture Mechanics and Structural Concrete addresses this need. The book provides a simple and straightforward study of fracture mechanics relating to concrete design and promotes its usage by highlighting the shortcomings of current design codes. It explains how fracture mechanics can overcome certain design problems, such as minimum reinforcement, punching shear failure and the influence of structural size upon shear capacity. Professional engineers, researchers and academics will find Fracture Mechanics and Structural Concrete an essential introduction to the subject. It will also be useful to postgraduate and final-year undergraduate students of civil engineering.
