Book Development of a Preliminary Rehabilitation Adherence Measure for Athletic Training

Download or read book Development of a Preliminary Rehabilitation Adherence Measure for Athletic Training written by Megan D. Granquist and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present investigation aims to 1) identify indicators (i.e., behaviors) of sport injury rehabilitation adherence that are relevant to collegiate athletic training and 2) develop a preliminary rehabilitation adherence measure for athletic training (RAdMAT) based on these indicators. Three steps are included in the development of the RAdMAT. First, certified athletic trainers currently practicing in the collegiate setting (n=7) identified clinically relevant indicators of sport injury rehabilitation adherence and these indicators were used to generate preliminary items for the measure. Second, an expert panel (i.e., sport injury/rehabilitation researchers, athletic training educators/faculty/staff) (n=12) reviewed the preliminary items and provided feedback pertaining to content and clarity of items. Expert ratings were used to revise the draft measure and provide an initial assessment of content validity. In step three, the 25-item preliminary RAdMAT was administered to a larger sample of certified athletic trainers to provide data for initial reliability and validity analyses (n=164). Results indicate the preliminary 25-item RAdMAT had good internal consistency but factor analyses reduced the measure to 16 items and suggested three sub-scales (attendance/participation, communication, attitude/effort). The resulting 16-item RAdMAT subscales and total all have good internal consistency and clearly discriminate among adherence levels. All individual items have good item-total correlations and contribute to internal consistency of their respective subscales and the total and all items discriminate among adherence levels. The RAdMAT has both a conceptual base and a base in clinical athletic training practice that make it particularly relevant and appropriate for use in athletic training settings. With only 16 items in a simple format, the RAdMAT is also relatively easy to use, whether by athletic trainers in clinical practice or for research purposes. Future investigations are needed to further establish the measure's psychometric properties and usefulness in research and practice."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Exploring Rehabilitation Adherence and the Motivational Climate Created by Athletic Trainers

Download or read book Exploring Rehabilitation Adherence and the Motivational Climate Created by Athletic Trainers written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between the athletic trainer created motivational climate and rehabilitation adherence displayed by their athletes. Four certified athletic trainers from one National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I institution participated. The study implemented a convergent mixed methods design, using the Rehabilitation Adherence Measure for Athletic Training as a quantitative measure of adherence and a semi-structured interview to establish the strategies athletic trainers use to organize the rehabilitation process, provide feedback to athletes, and evaluate rehabilitation progress. The semi-structured interview also allowed for other emerging themes during analysis. Results indicated that high-adhering athletes received more task-involving, basic need satisfying (empowering) strategies than low-adhering athletes. Additional exploration of emerging themes (i.e., outside influences, injury specifics, idiosyncrasies of the athlete) also impacted how the motivational climate was created. While the relationship indicates high-adhering athletes may be experiencing empowering motivational climates more so than low-adhering athletes, additional research must be conducted to understand the interaction of the other emergent themes in the creation of motivational climates in the sport injury rehabilitation context.

Book The Correlation Between Perceived Patient athletic Trainer Relationship and Therapeutic Intervention Adherence

Download or read book The Correlation Between Perceived Patient athletic Trainer Relationship and Therapeutic Intervention Adherence written by Edward M. Wozniakewicz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The current investigation was designed to determine if a relationship occurred between the perception of the Patient-Athletic Trainer Relationship (PATR) and Therapeutic Intervention (TI) adherence. Participants were from a Division III college in the Northeast U.S. The patients (n 30) completed a modified version of the Patient-Doctor Relationship Questionnaire (PDRQ9; Van der Feltz-Cornelis, Van Oppen, Van Marwijk, De Beurs, & Van Dyck, 2004) to assess the relationship with the Athletic Trainer (AT), while ATs (n = 7) completed the Rehabilitation Adherence Measure for Athletic Trainers (RAdMAT, Granquist, Gill, & Appaneal, 2010) to assess the TI adherence of the patient Pearson product moment correlations were computed and no relationship occurred between scores on the modified PDRQ9 and the RAdMAT (r = -. 08, p = 70), as well as between the modified PDRQ9 and the length of time the patient had worked with the AT (r = - 06, p = 74) The current study contrasts from previous literature regarding the relationships between how patients perceive the PATR and TI adherence, and the length of time of the patient had worked with the AT.

Book excerpt: Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine and measure mental toughness during the rehabilitation process with a mental imagery intervention using an electronic digital script. Participants: Based on a power analysis for a 2-tailed within-subjects test design using alpha=0.05, 57 orthopedic non-surgical participants were needed for this study. Setting: This study took place at an NCAA Division 1 and Division III University with male and female athletes who had sustainted a non-surgical orthopedic injury that required a rehabilitation porgram with an athletic trainer. Design: The study design was pre-posttest using the Mental Toughness Questionnaire (MTQ-48) to quantitatively measure mental toughness of the participants before beginning the non-surgical injury rehabilitation program and at the completion of the rehabilitation program while using an electronic mental imagery intervention. Intervention: An electronic digital mental imagery script was used as the intervention. Participants used during the application of cryotherapy at the end of each their rehabilitation sessions. Main Outcome Measures: The IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0 Armonk, NY : IBM Corp. was used to calculate the Wilcoxon Signed Rank for the mental toughness and the various subscales of the MTQ-48 data analysis. A one way ANOVA was used to analyze mental toughness between genders. Results: There were no significant differences in mental toughness changes with a mental imagery intervention over a minimum of 6 day rehabilitation program. There were no significant differences in the effects of mental toughness on the level of non-surgical injury rehabilitation adherence in collegiate aged student-athletes. There were no significant differences in mental toughness between genders of collegiate aged student-athletes when participating in a non-surgical injury rehabilitation. There were no sigificant differences in rehabilitation adherence between genders: Conclusion: The results of this study suggest athletic trainers, physical therapists, and physicians must continue to work to develop longer mental toughness intervention treatment programs to help athletes' improve their levels of mental toughness and sustain the improvements over time while maintaining success throughout a rehabilitation program.

Book NCAA Division I Athletic Trainers Perceptions and Use of Psychological Skills During Injury Rehabilitation

Download or read book NCAA Division I Athletic Trainers Perceptions and Use of Psychological Skills During Injury Rehabilitation written by Mary Kathleen Estepp and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied sport psychology research suggests that the use of psychological skills (e.g., positive self-talk, goal-setting, relaxation) during the rehabilitation process increase recovery rates, increase adherence to rehabilitation, and decrease anxiety and stress (Heaney, 2006). Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) hold a critical role within injury rehabilitation as the primary health care professional who interacts with injured athletes. Therefore, properly trained, ATCs have been identified as the ideal professional to implement psychological skills during injury rehabilitation (Larson, Starkey, & Zaichkowsky, 1996). The purpose of this study was to explore National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (D-I) ATCs use of psychological skills and perceptions of qualifications to implement psychological skills with athletes during rehabilitation. Results revealed that participants reported using goal-setting, communication, and time management most frequently with athletes. Results of a stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that participants confidence in their ability to effectively demonstrate psychological skills significantly predicted their use of psychological skills, along with perceptions of the effectiveness of psychological skills and previous level of training in sport psychology. Lastly, participants perceived psychologists to be the most qualified professional to implement psychological skills with injured athletes. Implications for ATCs and sport psychology professionals are education. This includes ATCs educational requirements to be more detailed and clear for athletic training students as well as education by sport psychology consultants to help other professional better understand their role in the overall sport team.
