Book excerpt: Abstract: The countless violations of children under 18 being recruited, enticed, harbored, transported, patronized, and maintained to perform a commercial sex act are an epidemic of children’s human rights that poses public health risks to millions worldwide. This form of modern-day slavery mutates across economic sectors affecting children from all backgrounds. With a multitude of children who are survivors of child sex trafficking (CST) in the American education system, school personnel are catalysts for change. This curriculum is designed for educational professionals, including certificated and classified employees, to engage in an authentic dialogue about the pervasiveness of CST and its adverse biopsychosocial outcomes. Notably, this curriculum adopts a stop, observe, ask, response (SOAR) framework grounded in a public health approach whereby the health, safety, and overall well-being of CST survivors are maximized. Last, this curriculum provides research, policy, and social work practice implications.

By examining emerging strategies for preventing and identifying these crimes, for assisting and supporting victims and survivors, and for addressing exploiters and traffickers, that report offers a path forward through recommendations designed to increase awareness and understanding and to support efforts to prevent, identify, and respond to these crimes. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States: A Guide for Providers of Victim and Support Services offers a more concise and focused perspective on the problem and emerging solutions for providers of victim and support services for children and adolescents. These service providers include policy makers, leaders, practitioners, organizations, and programs at the local, state, and federal levels.
