Book What Is Wrong with Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is Wrong with Germany Classic Reprint written by William Harbutt Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Wrong With Germany? Clear proof of urgency is obligatory on anyone who ventures to add to the abundant literature which has been called forth already in this country by the European War. In justification of the present book I would rely less upon the strong feeling of compulsion which has prompted it than upon the fact that it is the outcome of an honest endeavour to get behind the visible and more obvious causes of the war and to bring to light the tendencies of national thought and policy - the caus causantes - which had long been leading Germany directly towards this dismal catastrophe. It will be seen that in pursuing my inquiries I have been at pains to let the Germans be, as far as possible, their own critics and accusers. In placing them in the witness-box against themselves, I have relied not upon the confused and frenzied talk of the present moment, when the Germans are saying so many things that they will one day wish to forget, but upon deliberate utterances of well-known writers and public men evoked by the normal controversies of normal times and intended only for home consumption. It would have been possible to have multiplied indefinitely this self-incriminating evidence had it not seemed judicious to confine the selection to quite recent years. The book is intended, however, to serve a further object. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book What Is the German Nation Dying For Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is the German Nation Dying For? It is remarkable with what clearness of vision and confidence Karl Ludwig Krause foresaw the final outcome of the war as events are now shap ing themselves. Though a German himself, he maintained from the very start that a complete military defeat of his own country was needed for the good of the world and of the German people themselves, whom he does not divorce from their government in responsibility for the war. Book The Moral Conquest of Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Moral Conquest of Germany Classic Reprint written by Emil Ludwig and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Conquest of Germany Knowledge of the German character might have prevented World War II. This is why in this moment of decision of world importance I once more try to delineate the German national - character as a warning not to try "democracy" in Germany before a period of education. It is both wrong and dangerous to accept a political distinction between Nazis and Germans, as German propaganda would have it. This book offers a case for the guilt of the German nation. I have attempted before to present the two sides of the German character: in three studies on Bismarck, the Kaiser, and Hindenburg, and in my biographies of Goethe and Beethoven. These two sides I combined in my book The Germans: Double History of a Nation. Its publication was three years ahead of public opinion in this country; in 1941 the German problem was hardly recognized as such. In England, where the upper classes had come to know the Germans well by the bombs from above and by Lord Vansittart's excellent writings from within - the book became much more popular. A bit of the material in that book has meanwhile found its way into writings of other authors, such as Creel, Nizer, Schwarzschild from whom I am now borrowing some details. I have come forward with practical suggestions on the postwar treatment of Germany in lectures and broadcasts, in articles and pamphlets, before the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives, and before the Amg at Charlottesville. Many of these ideas were widely contested at the time of their appearance, but today most of them have been accepted. Book The Germans in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Germans in the United States Classic Reprint written by Albert Bernhardt Faust and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Germans in the United States The history of the Germans in the United States is too comprehensive a subject for a brief sketch. Yet the bare' outlines of a portrait often impress the characteristic features more vividly than color and detail. The history of the Germans in this country goes back to the earliest colonial period. Recurrent waves in the eighteenth were followed by great tides of German immigration in the nineteenth century, and these carried into the population of the United States an element second in amount only to the contribution of the English stock. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania-German Society, Vol. 25: Proceedings and Addresses at Lancaster, Pa., November 13, 1914 I cannot go beyond my country: it is the one of all; no one can be banished outside of this. My country is not forbidden to me, but only a locality. Into whatever land I come, I come into my own: none is exile, but only another country. My country is wherever it is well; for if one is wise he is a traveller; if foolish an exile. The great principle of virtue is, as he said, a mind gradually trained first to barter visible and transitory things, that it may afterwards be able to give them up. He is delicate to whom his country is sweet; but he is strong to whom every single thing is his country; indeed he is perfect to whom the world is exile. Book British and German Scholarship Classic Reprint

Download or read book British and German Scholarship Classic Reprint written by James Hope Moulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British and German Scholarship War and scholarship have not in the abstract much to do with one another. The scholar is normally in a back water where the tide of public life flows past him without rufi'iing his environment and men of affairs put him out of their reckoning as an excellent person who may be a national asset but is very little qualified to be a national adviser. In this war, unique as it is in so many directions, the scholar has become a storm centre. The university professors of Germany are regarded in this country as responsible beyond any single class, except the bureaucracy itself, for the making of the atmosphere in which the war arose; and one of their number, Treitschke, is held accountable almost in the first place of all. We are learning how a marvellously efficient system of national education, in a country where education counts more than in any other, has been skilft organized by the ruling oligarchy to hypnotize a docile people into the right spirit. Very possibly the professors are in some danger of receiving too large a share of the credit for the figure Germany is now presenting to the world. But the fact is clear that the intellectuals, so far from seeing vividly and teaching irresistibly that war is a crime against humanity. Book The German Emperor and the German Government

Download or read book The German Emperor and the German Government written by John W. Burgess and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Emperor and the German Government: An Address Delivered Before the Germanistic Society of America, January 5, 1909 Fully and guardedly. They certainly were not moved by the hope of securing out of the turmoil the introduction of the parliamentary system of government. But almost without exception they were guided by the men who have been protesting against the centralizing tendencies of re cent years, the states rights men, the modern particularists. Consciously or unconsciously to themselves, I am fully persuaded that their particularism was the secret force which caused them to exaggerate the supposed effects of His Majesty's remarks on the diplomacy and government of the Empire. Through this sentiment they were actually betrayed into a position in which they appeared to the outside world to be acting in harmony with the advocates of parliamentary government, for the purpose of curbing what these latter termed personal government. It be came quickly manifest, however, that this apparent har mony was only momentary and that the nation as a whole is making no demand for parliamentary government, but that, on the contrary, the large majority of the people, and that majority containing the best elements of the people, would most probably oppose its introduction. Being anxious that my own fellow countrymen should understand this situation correctly, I am going to examine into this question of parliamentary government for Germany with some degree of minuteness.
