I made a remark at that time which I find has been remembered as something new and carrying with it a little crumb of comfort. I told those who were obliged to stand, that I was very sorry, and that the only consolation I could offer was that I shared that disability with them, for I also have to stand. I hope that we may all of us become sufficiently absorbed in some high thoughts and ideals and hopes, so that we may forget to be weary. The Church. I shall speak to you this morning concerning The Church. My text I find in the first letter of Paul to Timothy, the 3rd chapter and the 15th verse: "The Church of the living God." Is there a living God? Is there a church of the living God? If there be, then in spite of all the evil and sorrow and darkness, we may sing the song of Pippa: "God's in his heaven: All's right with the world." A hundred years ago the beliefs of the people in this country and in England were practically settled, and there was a certain unanimity and homogeneity in those beliefs. They believed substantially the same things about the world, about God, about the origin and destiny of man, about this life and the next, for they supposed that they had authoritative, divine warrant for all these beliefs. But as we look abroad over the face of society today, we note a great change, and a change that has disturbed and troubled many. People are no longer so sure as to their beliefs as they once were. McKay gave thousands of speeches, including hundreds of temple and chapel dedications, civic addresses, funeral sermons, and General Conference and other Church-related talks. Many of these speeches contain some of the same prose and poetry, but no two speeches are the same. All of these discourses were written by McKay himself, and virtually all of them were typed, organized, and kept in large, legal-sized leather binders by Clare Middlemiss, his long-time personal secretary. His choice of prose reveals his favorite authors and literature, a glimpse into his personal library. It also conveys his ideals and his fervent belief in their truth. Never before, and not since, has The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had a prophet so well versed in secular as well as scriptural prose. McKay, Anne-Marie Wright Lampropoulos culls from the vast records of McKay's discourses that Middlemiss kept and groups certain categories of speeches together: dedications, civic addresses, Church discourses, and funeral sermons. Each chapter broadly analyzes a category and then includes samples of illustrative full speeches. This analysis and compilation illustrates how McKay looked to poignant prose for a sense of his own personal identity and inspiration, as well as the larger identity and inspiration of Church members.
