Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Reports of Mrs. Potter Palmer, President of the Board of Lady Managers, World's Columbian Commission The full benefit of this intermingling will not be felt, however, unless we, each and all, are generously willing to leave for a time the narrow boundaries in which our individual lives are passed, and give our minds and hearts an airing by entering into the thoughts and aspirations Of others, and enjoying the alluring vistas Opened before us. In this fresh, breezy atmosphere, brightened by thewarm sunshine Of sympathy, we shall be surprised to find that many of our familiar, conventional truths look very queer in some Of the sudden side-lights thrown on them; that they are not half so dignified and respectable as we fancied them. Above all things else, harmonious action is necessary for Our success. That is the foundation which we must lay for the superstructure that is to be gradually erected, and which, we trust, will be the successful result Of our work together. Book Practicing Citizenship

Download or read book Practicing Citizenship written by Kristy Maddux and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1893, the Supreme Court had officially declared women to be citizens, but most did not have the legal right to vote. In Practicing Citizenship, Kristy Maddux provides a glimpse at an unprecedented alternative act of citizenship by women of the time: their deliberative participation in the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Hailing from the United States and abroad, the more than eight hundred women speakers at the World’s Fair included professionals, philanthropists, socialites, and reformers addressing issues such as suffrage, abolition, temperance, prison reform, and education. Maddux examines the planning of the event, the full program of women speakers, and dozens of speeches given in the fair’s daily congresses. In particular, she analyzes the ways in which these women shaped the discourse at the fair and modeled to the world practices of democratic citizenship, including deliberative democracy, racial uplift, organizing, and economic participation. In doing so, Maddux shows how these pioneering women claimed sociopolitical ground despite remaining disenfranchised. This carefully researched study makes significant contributions to the studies of rhetoric, American women’s history, political history, and the history of the World’s Fair itself. Most importantly, it sheds new light on women’s activism in the late nineteenth century; even amidst the suffrage movement, women innovated practices of citizenship beyond the ballot box.

Download or read book Women Building History written by Wanda Corn and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsomely illustrated book is a welcome addition to the history of women during America’s Gilded Age. Wanda M. Corn takes as her topic the grand neo-classical Woman’s Building at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, a structure celebrating modern woman’s progress in education, arts, and sciences. Looking closely at the paintings and sculptures women artists made to decorate the structure, including the murals by Mary Cassatt and Mary MacMonnies, Corn uncovers an unspoken but consensual program to visualize a history of the female sex and promote an expansion of modern woman’s opportunities. Beautifully written, with informative sidebars by Annelise K. Madsen and artist biographies by Charlene G. Garfinkle, this volume illuminates the originality of the public images female artists created in 1893 and inserts them into the complex discourse of fin de siècle woman’s politics. The Woman’s Building offered female artists an unprecedented opportunity to create public art and imagine an historical narrative that put women rather than men at its center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Place Winner of the 2015 International Latino Book Award for Best Latino Focused Nonfiction Book Literary history is a history of reading. What happens during the act of reading is the subject of the branch of literary scholarship known as reader-response theory. Does the text guide the reader? Does the reader operate independently of the text? Questions like these shape the approach of the essays in this book, edited by a scholar known for his groundbreaking work in using reader-response theory as a window into Chicana and Chicano literature. Manuel M. Martín-Rodríguez has overseen several research projects aimed at documenting Chicana and Chicano reading practices and experiences. Here he gathers diverse and passionate accounts of reading drawn from that research. For many, books served as refuges from the sorrows of a childhood marked by violence or parental abandonment. Several of the contributors here salute the roles of teachers in introducing poetry and stories into their lives.
