Book Addresses and Discourses Historical and Religious

Download or read book Addresses and Discourses Historical and Religious written by E. Edwards Beardsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Discourses, Historical and Religious: With a Paper on Bishop Berkeley In discourses like those which follow there must needs be repetitions of events and thoughts which would not occur in a connected history, and which in such a history might well be counted blemishes. Here, however, they appear under new conditions and with varied connections and surroundings; and, at all events, could by no possibility have been avoided. One paper presents an exception to the rule which has shaped this collection, that, namely, on Bishop Berkeley. The life, however, of the mitred saint of Cloyne was so intimately connected with the story of the diocese of Connecticut, in his loving sympathy, wise counsels, and benefactions to the cause of good learning, that a sketch of him can hardly be re garded as out of place among these memorials. Book Religion and Public Discourse in an Age of Transition

Download or read book Religion and Public Discourse in an Age of Transition written by Geoffrey Cameron and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology, tourism, politics, and law have connected human beings around the world more closely than ever before, but this closeness has, paradoxically, given rise to fear, distrust, and misunderstanding between nation-states and religions. In light of the tensions and conflicts that arise from these complex relationships, many search for ways to find peace and understanding through a “global public sphere.” There citizens can deliberate on issues of worldwide concern. Their voices can be heard by institutions able to translate public opinion into public policy that embraces more than simply the interests and ideas of the wealthy and the empowered. Contributors to this volume address various aspects of this challenge within the context of Bahá’í thought and practice, whose goal is to lay the foundations for a new world civilization that harmonizes the spiritual and material aspects of human existence. Bahá’í teachings view religion as a source of enduring insight that can enable humanity to repair and transcend patterns of disunity, to foster justice within the structures of society, and to advance the cause of peace. Accordingly, religion can and ought to play a role in the broader project of creating a pattern of public discourse capable of supporting humanity’s transition to the next stage in its collective development. The essays in this book make novel contributions to the growing literature on post-secularism and on religion and the public sphere. The authors additionally present new areas of inquiry for future research on the Bahá’í faith.

Book Religious Discourse in Modern Japan

Download or read book Religious Discourse in Modern Japan written by Jun'ichi Isomae and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious Discourse in Modern Japan explores the introduction of the Western concept of “religion” to Japan in the modern era, and the emergence of discourse on Shinto, philosophy, and Buddhism. Taking Anesaki’s founding of religious studies (shukyogaku) at Tokyo Imperial University as a pivot, Isomae examines the evolution of this academic discipline in the changing context of social conditions from the Meiji era through the present. Special attention is given to the development of Shinto studies/history of Shinto, and the problems of State Shinto and the emperor system are described in relation to the nature of the concept of religion. Isomae also explains how the discourse of religious studies developed in connection with secular discourses on literature and history, including Marxism.

Book Discourses on the Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Discourses on the Philosophy of Religion written by George Ripley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Philosophy of Religion: Addresses to Doubters Who Wish to BelieveThe fears which are entertained by many, who are not theolo gians by profession, with regard to the effect of free discussion, often arises from the want of an intelligent and vigorous faith. They dread lest the progress of inquiry should bring to light some hidden defect in the grounds of our religion. They are, in fact, doubters, though they know it not. They wish to believe. They cannot bear to hear a word said which implies that any cherished view is wrong. But this arises from a lurking suspicion that there is something unsound in the fabric of their faith. To such minds these discourses are addressed. I would frankly point out to them the principles on which myown faith is built; and I cannot but'hope that theirs 'will gain strength by the exposition. The interests of speculative science and of practical piety appear to me so intimately blended, that it would cause me deep sorrow to think that I had laid a rude hand on either. What I have recently published explains the negative side of my faith. I here give the positive; and one should read both the statements in connexion, in order to perceive the complete whole in, which I venture to think my views exist in my own mind.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culture wars have as much to do with rhetorical style as moral substance. Cathleen Kaveny focuses on a powerful stream of religious discourse in American political speech: the Biblical rhetoric of prophetic indictment. It can be strong medicine against threats to the body politic, she shows, but used injudiciously it does more harm than good.

Book The Crisis of Muslim Religious Discourse

Download or read book The Crisis of Muslim Religious Discourse written by Lahouari Addi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showing that Muslim societies are facing a crisis that is more cultural than religious, this book focuses on cultural representations through which social life is experienced in the Muslim world. It brings a new theoretical framework to address the secularization process that is underway and the contradictions it entails. This volume will arouse a new debate on secularization and the relations between religion, culture and philosophy. The crisis Muslim societies are undergoing pertains to the culture and not to the Qur’an to the extent that people do not have access to the sacred in itself but only for oneself, meaning a cultural interpretation of the sacred. The Qur’an in itself is not an obstacle to secularization and modernization since any sacred text is experienced through culture. If we consider the European experience where secularization has first emerged, we see that culture has been transformed from medieval metaphysics to modern philosophy upholding a civic culture. Discussing secularization through cultural representation, this book launches new ideas that fill an important gap in the literature on secularization. It is a key resource for any readers interested in religious studies, philosophy and the anthropology of religion.
