Book Address to the Soldiers of Ohio by the Democratic State Central Committee The Union and the Constitution Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to the Soldiers of Ohio, by the Democratic State Central Committee: The Union and the Constitution And why should we have any such sympathy? Every motive that can actuate the human heart leads us to be true to our country, and we have not a single motive to induce us to be false to it. And you will, we feel sure, be slow to believe that that great old Democratic party, that has ever stood by the Union, and to which you have been justly proud to belong, has ceased to be the true party of the country. You will not believe that the fathers, brothers and friends whom you have left at home, have become sympathizers with treason, upon the malig nant assertions of their political opponents. Under these circumstances we have a right to believe you will be true to your own deeply cherished convictions; which must be that the old Democratic party with which you have heretofore acted, cannot be far out of the way. You will surely give much weight to the most reasonable presumption, that if you could be here with us, and be fully informed in regard to all the issues involved in the approaching election, the evidence would be clear and overwhelming to you, as it is to us, that we are sustaining the right measures and the right men. Book Inaugural Address of Salmon P Chase Governor of the State of Ohio Delivered Before the Senate and House of Representatives January 14 1856 Class

Download or read book Inaugural Address of Salmon P Chase Governor of the State of Ohio Delivered Before the Senate and House of Representatives January 14 1856 Class written by Salmon Portland Chase and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inaugural Address of Salmon P. Chase, Governor of the State of Ohio: Delivered Before the Senate and House of Representatives, January 14, 1856 Under instructions issued by the late Auditor of State, the statutory right of each citizen to deduct his debts from his credits, in listing his property for taxation, has been denied. In issuing these instructions, the late Auditor was governed, doubtless, by respect for a decision of a majority of the Judges of the Supreme Court, by which the section of the act which allows this deduction, was declared to be unconstitutional. Notwithstanding that decision, however, the Legislature has not thought fit to repeal the law, and it may be doubted whether the Court, upon re-consideration, will adhere to the opinion heretofore expressed. Should the present Auditor, under these circumstances, think it his duty to conform his instruo tions to the statute, which remains unrepealed, rather than to the Opinion of the majority of the court, the right'denied by his predecessor will be restored. Book Address of the American Central Committe to the People of the State of Ohio

Download or read book Address of the American Central Committe to the People of the State of Ohio written by American Party (Ohio) and published by . This book was released on 1855 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campaign literature for the American Party (Know-Nothing Party) candidate for governor of Ohio, Allen Trimble. The first side, printed in 3 columns with headline, contains a statement, signed by the members of the American State Central Committee, which asks and answers the question, "If ... we are opposed to the principles and policy of the [Democratic] party which nominated Mr. [William] Medill, (it may be asked), why should we not support Mr. [Salmon P.] Chase? ... We ask, in turn, why should any honest citizen of Ohio, or of this nation, be compelled to vote for one of two candidates only, when he can agree with neither?" At the foot of the page are 4 iterations of the "American state ticket": Allen Trimble (governor), Thomas H. Ford (lieutenant governor), Francis M. Wright (Auditor of state), James H. Baker (secretary of state), William H. Gibson (treasurer of state), Jacob Brinkerhof and Charles C. Converse (judges of the Supreme Court), Francis D. Kimball (attorney general), and Alexander G. Conover (member of Board of Public Works). The verso, printed in 6 columns, consists of attacks on Chase reprinted from various sources, with an editorial reference to September 1855 as the present month ("inst."), ending with the "Trimble platform, adopted by the American State Convention, August 9th, 1855." Chase is denounced as "a disunionist and an ultra abolitionist, "in favor of the Higher Law," who would "nullify the Constitution of the United States," opposes "the restoration of the Missouri Compromise Act," is "in favor of Negro suffrage" and "Negro children attending the same public schools with the whites," and prefers "the policy which favors foreigners, to that which is purely American."
