Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to Abolitionists Objection IV. A fourth objection is made up of the statement of extreme cases, and the allegation that it is impossible entirely to abstain. We are asked, what shall be done by the crews of vessels driven by storms into slaveholding ports; or by men who become convinced of the sinfulness of slavery, while residing in the midst of a slave state, where to remain or whence to escape, without the use of slave produce, is alike impossible. We are reminded that if we travel in stage-coach or steam-boat, we Shall find slave cotton in the linings ofthe one and the bedding and tablecloths of the other; that in every book or paper which we read, we handle the unclean thing, and that even anti-slavery publications must be suspended till paper unstained with slavery can be procured to write and print upon. Nay, that then the difliculty will not he escaped, for the coin with which we pay the printer, and the boards of his office floor, as well as of our own dwelling houses, are perhaps made of slave-wrought materials. Book An Address to the Abolitionists of Massachusetts on the Subject of Political Action Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to the Abolitionists of Massachusetts, on the Subject of Political Action Our cause has gathered into its ranks in the short space of seven years, its hundreds of thousands; and numbers, among its friends, the most fearless, and God-devoted spirits in the land. We mention these things, not as an idle boast, but that you may lay to heart the responsibilities, that grow out of your present position. Your duty, as citizens of the State, more than ever demands your serious attention and thought. We pray you to consider what we shall say to you on this subject. There are those who disapprove of every form of political action, on the part of abolitionists. They contend that our cause should be presented exclusively under its religious and philanthropic aspect; that it will be degraded and enfeebled at the North, by connecting it with politics, - while, at the South, our political efforts will rouse a more united and determined resistance to our objects. We cannot yield to this reasoning. It proceeds, we think, upon a narrow view of the subject. Politics, rightly considered, is a branch of morals, and cannot be deserted innocently. Our moral convictions must follow us to the ballot-box. They arc not less imperative on us as citizens, than as members of the church, or fathers of families. In each, we have nothing to do, but to carry out our highest idea, simply and fearlessly. If the public mind is misled or vitiated on the subject of politics, - if politics has come to be considered as a game played by the desperate and unprincipled for power or emolument, it must not therefore be abandoned to them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from No Compromise With Slavery: An Address Delivered in the Broadway Tabernacle, New York, February 14, 1854 I. I am a believer in that portion of the Declara tion of American Independence in which it is set forth, as among self-evident - truths, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Hence, I am an Abolitionist. Hence, I cannot but regard oppression in every form - and most of all, that which turns a man into a thing - with indigna tion and abhorrence. 'not to cherish these feelings would be recreancy to principle. They who desire me to be dumb on the subject of Slavery, unless I will open my mouth in its defence, ask me to give the lie to my professions, to degrade my manhood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to the Abolitionists Lovejoy, as is needed to give assurance against its repetition. I have missed the true tone in the Emancipator, ' the organ ofyour National Society. I account for this silence, by your strong sympathy with your slaughtered friend, and by your feeling as ifone, who had so gen erously given himself to the cause, deserved nothing but praise. Allow me to say, that here you err. The individual is nothmg, in comparison with the truth. Bring out the truth, suffer who may. The fact, that a good man has fallen through a mistaken concept1on of duty, makes it more necessary to expose the error. Death, courageously met in a good cause by a respected friend, may throw a false lustre over dangerous pririciples which were joined with his virtues. Besides, we do not dishonor a friend in acknowledging him to have erred. The best men eir. T he most honored defenders ofreligion and virtue have sometimes been impelled, by the very fervor which made them great, into rash courses. I regret, then, that your disapprobation of Mr. Lovejoy's resistance to force has not been as earnest, as your grateful acknowledgments of his self-consecration to a holv cause. Book Political Abolition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Political Abolition Classic Reprint written by Calvin Colton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Abolition It is that of a Northern man, born and educated in a free State, always opposed to slavery, still opposed to it, judging it to be wrong, and desiring to see it abolished, as well in this country, as in all others. This he assumes to be the general feeling of the people in the free States, as he has rarely found an instance to the contrary. We, therefore, of the free States, (we speak for the great body of the people, ) do not yield to the Abolitionists a whit in our opposition to slavery; we differ from them only as to the mode of getting rid of the evil. We claim to be the true friends of the slave, while we believe them to be pursuing a course hos tile to his best interests, and unfavorable to his emancipation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at the Re-Union Convention: Of the Old Abolitionists of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, October 1st, 1879, at Alliance, Ohio In taking aretrospective View as I have of the long strug gle in which the Abolitionists were brought into such danger ous prominence some persons, not well informed, may think that I have been harsh in my censure of the Church for the part she took against us, and in behalf of the abominations of Slavery. But I stand here to-day as an attorney for the speechless dead to defend their characters from the ignominy heaped upon them during a course of thirty years by their fellow citizens. Some ofthem in that holy war died in prison; some were branded; many were mobbed. They all died 1111 der a cloud of reproach, seeing only with the eye of faith the dawn ofthat day which we see in its meridian glory! In the persecutions which followed them to the grave it was the Church which led the way, and cried Steboy! To the dogs and no dogs have such sharp teeth and so ferocious a spirit as those which the Church breeds in her kennels! I would he faithless to our compatriots in the grave, if, on such an occa sion as the present, I did not defend them before this genera tion from the assaults which their eiemies made upon their. Book Abolitionism Exposed

Download or read book Abolitionism Exposed written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abolitionism Exposed: Corrected It may be considered a work of supererogation to attempt to expose Abolitionism any further than has been done by the able author of "Abolitionism Exposed," a gentleman who had the boldness to come forward, single-handed and alone, as champion against a host of abolitionists, and boldly proclaimed he would prove the "principles of abolitionism injurious to the slaves themselves, dangerous to this nation, and contrary to the express commands of God." But being deprived of the privilege of meeting them in public debate by the burning of Pennsylvania Hall, and "convinced that the best interests of the country and of common humanity itself are involved in the question of abolitionism," he has, with the promptness of the true patriot, published a large pamphlet, developing at considerable length, with his usual profundity and eloquence, the pernicious tendency of these obnoxious principles. The only apology which the writer of this pamphlet offers for retouching the subject is, his having travelled and resided in the south, which have given him opportunities for the personal observation of slavery, which it is presumed the learned author of Abolitionism Exposed has not enjoyed. It would seem, from the silence of the abolitionists since Dr. Sleigh wrote his work, that they are all killed off, or at least stricken dumb. Else why have they not answered it? Does it not look rather suspicious for men, who pretend to be lovers of truth, and are frequently prating about free discussion, to shrink from discussion when an opportunity is offered them? They certainly cannot plead for excuse, that the work of a gentleman who has frequently signalized himself in public debate, and is also celebrated in the literary and scientific world, is not of sufficient importance to merit a reply from them. The only legitimate conclusion is, that they cannot answer it, - that it has completely used them up; and they have not a word to say for themselves. Book William Lloyd Garrison

Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Lloyd Garrison: The Abolitionist The author of this volume desires by way of preface to say just two things: - firstly, that it is his earnest hope that this record of a hero may be an aid to brave and true living in the Republic, so that the problems knocking at its door for solution may find the heads, the hands, and the hearts equal to the performance of the duties imposed by them upon the men and women of this generation. William Lloyd Garrison was brave and true. Bravery and truth were the secret of his marvelous career and achievements. May his countrymen and countrywomen imitate his example and be brave and true, not alone in emergent moments, but in everyday things as well. So much for the author's firstly, now for his secondly, which is to acknowledge his large indebtedness in the preparation of this book to that storehouse of anti-slavery material, the story of the life of William Lloyd Garrison by his children. Out of its garnered riches he has filled his sack. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
