Book Address of Gen John O neill President F B Classic Reprint

Download or read book Address of Gen John O neill President F B Classic Reprint written by John O'neill and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address of Gen. John O'neill, President F. B Reconstruction OF the F. B. - A certain piously inclined individual, hav ing set fire to his neighbor's house, was one of the loudest in crying for water. This reminds us of certain in'cendia'ries who, after spending years in ruining the Fenian Brotherhood, and bringing disgrace and ridicule on their own people, and having run as far as their ropes will allow, without actually, as yet, hanging themselves, are now crying out for Reconstruction! Reconstruction, say those criminal bunglers, is the Order of the day; so by all means let the Fenians be reconstructed; let the present leaders give way for new men, and let both branches unite again. It simply means that certain rats, who live in bare cup boards - having devoured the people's bread all up - would like to get once more Of board our good ship, to riot for a time on the plethoric stores safely guarded t ere. Two branches, ' is the glib quotation on the lips of those driveling idiots. There may have been two branches, gentlemen, but there is only one now. The other is dead. It was always rotten. It never bore any fruit but misery and treason. And should foolish men allow this poisonous fungus to now touch the healthy body, it will kill that 'too. Book excerpt: In June 1866, an 800-man contingent of the Irish Fenian Brotherhood invaded Canada from Buffalo, New York, in an effort to free Ireland from British rule. The force was led by Irish-born John Charles O'Neill, a veteran of the Union Army's 5th Indiana Cavalry. The three-day invasion was a military success but a political failure, yet O'Neill was celebrated for his leadership and humanity. Elevated to the presidency of the Fenian Brotherhood, "General" O'Neill would again lead Irish nationalists against Canada in 1870. Jailed and later pardoned by President U.S. Grant, O'Neill left the Fenians and attempted a third, futile attack into Canada. O'Neill then became a colonizer, urging Irish Americans to abandon cities in the East to settle on the fertile plains of the West. O'Neill City, Nebraska, is named in his honor. This first full-length biography covers the rise, fall and resurgence of a remarkable figure in American and Irish history.

Book When the Irish Invaded Canada

Download or read book When the Irish Invaded Canada written by Christopher Klein and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Christopher Klein's fresh telling of this story is an important landmark in both Irish and American history." —James M. McPherson Just over a year after Robert E. Lee relinquished his sword, a band of Union and Confederate veterans dusted off their guns. But these former foes had no intention of reigniting the Civil War. Instead, they fought side by side to undertake one of the most fantastical missions in military history: to seize the British province of Canada and to hold it hostage until the independence of Ireland was secured. By the time that these invasions--known collectively as the Fenian raids--began in 1866, Ireland had been Britain's unwilling colony for seven hundred years. Thousands of Civil War veterans who had fled to the United States rather than perish in the wake of the Great Hunger still considered themselves Irishmen first, Americans second. With the tacit support of the U.S. government and inspired by a previous generation of successful American revolutionaries, the group that carried out a series of five attacks on Canada--the Fenian Brotherhood--established a state in exile, planned prison breaks, weathered infighting, stockpiled weapons, and assassinated enemies. Defiantly, this motley group, including a one-armed war hero, an English spy infiltrating rebel forces, and a radical who staged his own funeral, managed to seize a piece of Canada--if only for three days. When the Irish Invaded Canada is the untold tale of a band of fiercely patriotic Irish Americans and their chapter in Ireland's centuries-long fight for independence. Inspiring, lively, and often undeniably comic, this is a story of fighting for what's right in the face of impossible odds.

Book Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis

Download or read book Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis written by J. Fletcher Williams and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recounting of events which have transpired in our own neighborhood is the most interesting of all history. There is a fascination in the study of the intermingled fact and fiction of the past which is heightened by a familiarity with the localities described. The river which flows through our native village acquires a new interest when, in imagination, we see the Indian canoe on its surface and the skin-covered tepee on its banks, as in days of yore. Log cabins, straw roofs, and the rude "betterments" of the hardy pioneer, are the next changes on the scene, followed soon by mushroom towns, some of which perish as quickly as they spring up, while others astonish us by their rapid growth; cities are built, and moss and ivy, the evidences of age, o soon accumulate. The purpose of this book is to present these pictures in their natural succession, arousing the enthusiasm of the reader, if possible, giving him a more vigorous enjoyment of the present by linking if with the past. The compass of this work is wide, extending over a long period of time, embracing the accounts of early explorers, also reaching back among the legends of the past, and approaching the events of today. In the end it leaves a thrilling account and narrative of the history of Hennepin county, the townships and especially the city of Minneapolis.
