We therefore concur in the suggestion that a committee should be appointed to consider and report upon the matter at the next semi-annual Department Encampment, and we recommend that a committee of five mem bers be appointed for that purpose. C., January 30, 1883 If it were an open question, it wotlltl be worth while discussing the point as to whether or not the badge, and the badge only, is not a satfieient designation for public as well as Post occasions. Many prefer not to uniform, and many hesitate to incur the cost, (small though it is.) But it is not an open question. It is set tled. The rule is that we are to wear on proper oeeasions a pre scribed dress. On all accounts, therefore, every reasonable effort should be used to induce all comrades to supply themselves. There is some objection to wearing the cap, some preferring the hat. I see no serious objection to permitting eaeh Post to settle that question, and I suggest the wisdom of considering as well whether it would not be advisable to assess a small per capita tax to form a fund to be offered as a prize to the Post that shall, during the coming year add most largely to its uniformed mem bership. The fund oould be used to aid comrades in straightened eirenmstanees to pay for their uniforms or otherwise, as the win ning Post should desire. These are suggestions which the E11 eampment may well consider, and Which are perhaps worth the attention of a committee. Inspired by recent interest in memory studies and energized by the ongoing neorevisionist turn, a vibrant new literature has given the lie to the once-obligatory lament that the postbellum lives of Civil War soldiers were irretrievable. Despite this flood of historical scholarship, fundamental questions about the essential character of Civil War veteranhood remain unanswered. Moreover, because work on veterans has often proceeded from a preoccupation with cultural memory, the Civil War’s ex-soldiers have typically been analyzed as either symbols or producers of texts. In The War Went On: Reconsidering the Lives of Civil War Veterans, fifteen of the field’s top scholars provide a more nuanced and intimate look at the lives and experiences of these former soldiers. Essays in this collection approach Civil War veterans from oblique angles, including theater, political, and disability history, as well as borderlands and memory studies. Contributors examine the lives of Union and Confederate veterans, African American veterans, former prisoners of war, amputees, and ex-guerrilla fighters. They also consider postwar political elections, veterans’ business dealings, and even literary contests between onetime enemies and among former comrades.
