Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the Euphemian Philomathean Literary Societies, of Erskine College; At the Annual Commencement, August 8th, 1855 On the fourth of July, 1776, the place where we now stand, was on the very verge of civilization in the Province of South Carolina. A short distance hence - at the point where the trail from Ninety-Six to the Keowee crossed the Cherokee boundary - stood a small Indian trading-house, known as Dewett's Corner. Hostilities had then, already, commenced between Great Britain and her Colonies. Fort Moultrie, hastily constructed of spungy logs from its immediate vicinity, and fighting under the famous crescent banner of blue, had already driven the Fleet of Sir Petee Paekek, shattered and defeated, from the harbor of Charleston, and by that heroic achievement had given renown to the Palmetto, and a proud device to the escutcheon of the embryo State. The Cherokee Indians, urged by Cameeox and other British agents, and stimulated by the hope of plunder, and of revenge for all their hoarded wrongs, real and imaginary, had, in violation of recent treaties, seized the tomahawk, crossed the border near this place, and rushed, with savage ferocity, upon the exposed inhabitants of the frontier. Book The Sources of Anti Slavery Constitutionalism in America 1760 1848

Download or read book The Sources of Anti Slavery Constitutionalism in America 1760 1848 written by William M. Wiecek and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book examines the constitutional and legal doctrines of the antislavery movement from the eve of the American Revolution to the Wilmot Proviso and the 1848 national elections. Relating political activity to constitutional thought, William M. Wiecek surveys the antislavery societies, the ideas of their individual members, and the actions of those opposed to slavery and its expansion into the territories. He shows that the idea of constitutionalism has popular origins and was not the exclusive creation of a caste of lawyers. In offering a sophisticated examination of both sides of the argument about slavery, he not only discusses court cases and statutes, but also considers a broad range of "extrajudicial" thought—political speeches and pamphlets, legislative debates and arguments.

Book excerpt: The centrality of religion in the life of the Old South, the strongly religious nature of the sectional controversy over slavery, and the close affinity between religion and antebellum American nationalism all point toward the need to explore the role of religion in the development of southern sectionalism. In Gospel of Disunion Mitchell Snay examines the various ways in which religion adapted to and influenced the development of a distinctive southern culture and politics before the Civil War, adding depth and form to the movement that culminated in secession. From the abolitionist crisis of 1835 through the formation of the Confederacy in 1861, Snay shows how religion worked as an active agent in translating the sectional conflict into a struggle of the highest moral significance. At the same time, the slavery controversy sectionalized southern religion, creating separate institutions and driving theology further toward orthodoxy. By establishing a biblical sanction for slavery, developing a slaveholding ethic for Christian masters, and demonstrating the viability of separation from the North through the denominational schisms of the 1830s and 1840s, religion reinforced central elements in southern political culture and contributed to a moral consensus that made secession possible.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the Literary Societies of Erskine College, Abbeville District, S. C., At the Appointment, and by the Request of the Euphemian Society, on the Sixth Anniversary, Sept. 17, 1845 To enter into a minute enquiry into the causes, by which these circum stances were brought about, would be foreign to our purpose, and unsuited to an occasion like this. Let us however glance at some of the features that would be presented by such an enquiry. [fwe examine, then, the circumstances which preceded the American Revolution, the state of our ancestors with respect to the Governments under which they lived, the liberties they enjoyed and the privileges they exercised, and compare them with the circumstances which preceded other revolutions which failed in their object of establishing free government, we will discover a vast dif ference between them, and much to sustain the truth of what we have al ready advanced. We will find that our revolution was only a successive step in the march of political improvement, founded upon previous advan ces, and growing out of principles which time and usage can alone be suf ficient to establish, and which, in fact, ages had consecrated in the minds ofour ancestors. We will find that our liberty and institutions were the offshoots of the liberty and institutions of our ancestors in England, which were not the work of a year, or the result of one revolution, or the pro ductions ofindividual efforts, but which in the course of ages, and through a series of changes and revolutions had gradually grown up. Though the Christians on all sides agreed that the Bible was authoritative, their interpretations of slavery in Scripture led to a full-blown theological crisis.
