Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at the Annual Commencement of the South Carolina Military Academy, July 8, 1892 There was one aspect in which this was an equivocal compliment. But it was not so intended, nor so received. On the contrary, it expressed intimate and kindly relations of which it was a pleasure to be assured. And so, when a desired speaker from abroad failed to be secured for this occasion, and recourse was had to one not from abroad - upon the principle, doubtless, that he could be gotten at any time - he was not hurt by being called upon to fill a gap, but attered by the confidence that could rely upon his willingness so to do. Yet the good lady to whom reference was made never expected anything but home-entertainment when she came in unexpectedly and without ceremony. She was content to be treated as one of the family, and not as company. And may not he who is but as a derm'er ressort upon an oc casion like this, reasonably ask that nothing more shall be required of him than the plain fare of the ordinary house hold board? This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, N. Y: At the Exercises Incident to the Centenary of Major-General Robert Anderson, U. S. Army, June 14th, 1905 Telegram received 10 P. M. New York City, June 10, 1905. To Colonel Greenough, Fort Hamilton, N. Y. H. General Grant requests me to ask you from him to deliver my father, General Anderson's, centenary address at West Point on Wednesday, June 14th. Full memorial services by order of secretary of war. Mrs. James M. Lawton. While on duty at the U. S. M. A. from 1868 to 1873 it was my privilege to be associated with Major-General Robert Anderson, and with his family in a way which made me feel that I understood and appreciated the inner character of the man; consequently when after a lapse of many years I received the dispatch above, it seemed but fitting, in view of the occasion, to make some effort to present to my audience what had impressed me as prominent and beautiful in the personality of the distinguished soldier, and deduce therefrom what I might, rather than content myself with matters well known in his public career and needing no reiteration. The extracts used are selected with as much care as the limited time permitted, from a mass of official documents and private papers of General Anderson in hands of his daughter. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inaugural Address Delivered in the State House, Dec; 8, 1857: By Order of the Board of Trustees of the South Carolina College Now, as surely as the order of complexity and depen dence among the sciences, which I have mentioned above necessitates a corresponding order of historic develop ment, so surely does it also necessitate the same order in the culture of each individual. In this, as well as in many other instances, the history of the race is the type of the history of the individual. In every complete seientific course therefore, Mathematics must be first, and Geology last in order of time. They form as it were the two opposite poles of a scientific course. If we diminish or destroy the one or the other, the equilibrium is over thrown, the completeness of the course is destroyed. In the one case we imitate the folly of him who builds his house upon sand or straw, in the other of him who exhausting his means in laying deep the foundation, built nothing thereon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at Chapel Hill, Before the North Carolina Institute of Education: On Wednesday, June 26, 1833, the Day Before the Commencement of the University One would think too, from the rapidity with which the pupil is some' times hurried through a course of instruction - from the marvellous short time in which a raw and ignorant bo'y becomes a ripe scholar and accomplished gentleman, that some of our modern pedagogues had discovered Mr. Shandy's Northwest passage to the Intellectual World - that they had found out that Shorter way of going to work, by which the soul furnishes itself with knowledge and instruction. Book Address Delivered at the 24th Annual Commencement of Wellesley College

Download or read book Address Delivered at the 24th Annual Commencement of Wellesley College written by Le Baron Russell Briggs and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at the 24th Annual Commencement of Wellesley College: June 23, 1902 In this reaction, when you have shu ed OR the coil of your last college days and find yourself face to face with a new life or with the return to an old one, you are prone to ask, What has it all been for? Am I fitter for the life I must live than if I had been living it four years already College has been fascinating, no doubt; but many fascinating things do not pay. I have Opened several doors to knowledge, and have learned that, work as hard and as long as I may, I can never see the thousandth part of that to which a single one of them may lead; I have formed friendships that will last; I have won something with which I would not part for money and without which I can no more imagine myself than I can conceive myself annihilated. These college years have become an inextricable part of me; yet am I, after all, happier and better than if I had never tasted their sweetness had never caught glimpses of ideals that in every-day life may be my rebuke and my despair In a small degree you feel as men and women feel when they wake to the truth that their elders have moved on that they themselves are now the older generation to whom the younger turns for counsel; that other people will lean on them, and that the days when they may lean on other people are gone and gone forever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the Philodemic Society: At the Commencement 0f Georgetown College, August 28, 1846 The youth here have had not only all the advantages of education which we had in our day, but they have had the benefits also of all the new lights, the discoveries and 1m provement that have since been made. They are the grey beards, we the striplings. As knowledge increases, our views are enlarged, our wants multiplied, and our social condition improved; um der the pressure of newly constituted wants, there has gone forth from the schools a spirit of philosophical research which gives new strength to the human mind, and imparts to the ingenuity of man-energies whose compass cannot be measured. Ever urging on to fresh conquests of mind over matter, the achievements of this spirit are seen in the discoveries, the inventions, and improvements which mark the times. Almost daily we hear of some new thing, of some triumph of mind over matter, which those who wit ness it are ready to pronounce the ne plus ultra of humaningenuity. But to-morrow, the ever busy mind of man, acting under the impulse of an age eminently utilitarian, pushes on with its discoveries, and finds more room for improvement: the powers of ingenuity are again taxed with a new idea, and the next day brings forth a plus ultra. We were not content. To snatch the lightning from the clouds, and to turn the thunder - bolt aside from its mark; for in the act electricity was discovered to be an important agent of nature. Finding that man might rule the light ning, the utilitarian sought to use it; as knowledge with regard to it has increased, its uses have been extended, until ingenuity has contrived to fashion it into wings for thought, and then to charge it with the instant delivery of messages as far asunder as the poles. Philosophers have found new elements. The old dogma of fire, earth, air; and water, is exploded. Light, heat, and electricity are now the agents; with these we send invisi ble couriers throu h the air; with these we print and paint, spin and weave, and endow machinery almost with the at tributes of intelligence. With such agents the world is set in motion. Nature employs them in all her works, and when man begins to enlist them into his service, he may well boast of a step gained, and talk of advancement and improvement.
