Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address at the Centennial Celebration of the Settlement of the Town of Lancaster, N. H: July 14, 1864 Ladies and Gentlemen A hundred years ago, the last act in the drama of the French and Indian war had just closed. France and Spain had ceded all claimed rights to the possession of territory east of the Mississippi river, and England held nu disturbed sway in the vast country, stretching from the Gulf to the Arctic sea, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean. The last great struggle of the native Indians to recover their hunting grounds was over. The brave Pontiac, with his five and twenty Indian tribes, scattered all along from the Shenandoah to the great lakes, and down the Ohio to the very banks of the Mississippi, over the mountains and through the prairies, had buried the tomahawk and the scalping-knife, and smoked the pipe of peace. At the first dawn of security the indomitable sons of the Pilgrims plunged into the wilderness with their axes and their rifles, to plant new homes for themselves and their posterity. On the 19th of April, A. D. 1764, Captain David Page, his son David Page, Jr., about 18 years of age, and Emmons Stockwell, with perhaps one or two others, having pushed up the Connecticut valley from Petersham, Massachusetts, through the town of Haverhill, reached the spot where we now are. They were charmed by the natural loveliness of this valley, and their fondest desires were gratified. Standing on yonder elevation, with those majestic mountains behind them, the unrivaled Pilot range on their right hand and the green hills on their left, with those bald sentinels guarding the pas sage before them, they gazed down into this paradise of meadows, with the meandering river, like a silver cord, run ning through them, all clothed in the fresh verdure of the opening Spring. What a heaven was here spread out before them! With hearts full of gratitude, they thanked the God of nature that his mysterious providence had guided them here. H., July 14, 1864: Reported by J. M. W. Yerrinton A national salute, fired from two Old field pieces, taken from the British by Stark, at Bennington, the display of flags and the ringing of bells, ushered in the day. At an early hour, the stream of travel from the neighboring towns, on both sides of the river, commenced, and soon the usually quiet town presented an animated and holiday aspect. In the village itself, all labor was suspended, and the people gave themselves up to the unrestrained enjoyment of the day, and the exercise of a general and cordial hospitality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers Read Before the Lancaster County Historical Society, Friday, April 5, 1918, Vol. 22: Report of the Centennial Observance of Lancaster City; Minutes of April Meeting How few are aware of the size of the cattle business of Lancaster and that in dollars 'it reached upwards of last year. Lancaster has come to be regarded as the largest shipping and receiving station for cattle and other live stock in the East. Starting twenty-two years ago, the Union Stock Yards of Lancaster to-day has three hundred pens to suitably provide for the carloads of live stock handled in 1917, of which all but 157, devoted to hogs and sheep, were needed in the care of the incoming and outgoing cattle. This means four to five miles of cars stretched in a continuous line, and if we estimate thirty head to the car we have upwards of head of cattle, or substantially seven hundred head for each of the three hundred working days in the year. In passing it may be remark-cd that some of these cattle last year came from Edmonton, the capital of the province of Alberta, Canada, miles away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Address: Delivered in Town Hall, Melrose, Mass;, July 4, 1876 Long before our independence was achieved, the Scrip ture, Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof, had been cast into a certain bell, destined to become a most famous one, and placed upon the State House in Philadelphia. True, prophetic voices con cerning America had spoken as early as 1752, when this bell was cast. Bishop Berkeley, Samuel Sewall, the Mar quis d'argenson, Turgot, and others, had plainly predicted the time when the colonies would be free the latter saying in 1750, Colonies are like fruits, which hold to the tree only until their maturity; when sufficient for themselves, thev did that which Carthage afterwards did, - tkat which some day America will do.' And it came to pass that this very bell, which had been broken and recast twice, and been in constant use since 1752, with this heaven-born inscription upon it, should, one hundred years ago, declare Liberty, and ring out to the world the glad tidings, that a new nation had sprung into existence, proclaiming in language under stood by every ear, All Men are Born Free and Equal. A century has passed since the declaration thus heralded, and which we have heard read to-day, became a reality; and we are now enjoying the blessings then fought for and established and, at this moment, almost every town, city, and hamlet is commemorating the event. To-day we celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of that all-important, that eventful epoch in our history. It has been said that cen tennial celebrations are strikings of the great clock of time, which admonish us to ponder upon the teachings of the past, and rightly appreciate the responsibilities of the present. This is, indeed, the glorious fourth of July: the centennial fourth of J ulyl and are we not excusable if we indulge in a little self-glorification? But, to do this the most thoroughly, the most satisfactorily, it seems to me, it will be necessary for each to trace the rise and growth of their respective towns, from their small beginnings to their present stand-point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lancaster County Colonization Society Dr. Finley settled upon the plan of colonization in Africa. As early as February. 1816, he wrote a letter to a friend in which he deeply deplored the calamitous and degraded state of the people of color, and suggested, as a means of improving their morals and manners and rescuing them from the debasement under which they labored in this country, the plan of forming a colony on the western coast of Africa for their reception. He counted largely on the advantages that such a colony, by the intro duction of civilization and Christianity, would insure to Africa. Full of these benevolent views, be repaired to Washington, D.
