Download or read book Fossil Crinoids written by Hans Hess and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crinoids have graced the oceans for more than 500 million years. Among the most attractive fossils, crinoids had a key role in the ecology of marine communities through much of the fossil record, and their remains are prominent rock forming constituents of many limestones. This is the first comprehensive volume to bring together their form and function, classification, evolutionary history, occurrence, preservation and ecology. The main part of the book is devoted to assemblages of intact fossil crinoids, which are described in their geological setting in twenty-three chapters ranging from the Ordovician to the Tertiary. The final chapter deals with living sea lilies and feather stars. The volume is exquisitely illustrated with abundant photographs and line drawings of crinoids from sites around the world. This authoritative account recreates a fascinating picture of fossil crinoids for paleontologists, geologists, evolutionary and marine biologists, ecologists and amateur fossil collectors.

Book Lower Carboniferous Echinoderms from Northern Utah and Western Wyoming

Download or read book Lower Carboniferous Echinoderms from Northern Utah and Western Wyoming written by Gary D. Webster and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1997 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An abundance of crinoid ossicles was noted in the early reports of Lower Carboniferous strata of northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. Articulated crinoid cups and crowns, however, were not reported. Collections of the past 50 years and especially the past 15 years have found significant numbers of well-preserved crinoid cups and crowns along with a few echinoids, blastoids, and asterozoans in the Gardison Limestone of the Wasatch Range, Henderson Canyon Formation of the Bear River Range, Wellsville Mountain, and northern parts of the Wasatch Range of northern Utah, as well as in the Lodgepole Limestone of western Wyoming. The purposes of this paper are to describe the crinoids, blastoid, and echinoids from northern Utah and western Wyoming, discuss their relationship to previously described faunas from North America and Europe, and relate their stratigraphic occurrences to conodont zonations and their geographic occurrence to recent interpretations of the regional carbonate facies and tectonic setting.

Book Echinoderm Paleobiology

    Book Details:
  • Author : William I. Ausich
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2008-07-18
  • ISBN : 0253351286
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book Echinoderm Paleobiology written by William I. Ausich and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-18 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant faunal elements in shallow Paleozoic oceans, echinoderms are important to understanding these marine ecosystems. Echinoderms (which include such animals as sea stars, crinoids or sea lilies, sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers) have left a rich and, for science, extremely useful fossil record. For various reasons, they provide the ideal source for answers to the questions that will help us develop a more complete understanding of global environmental and biodiversity changes. This volume highlights the modern study of fossil echinoderms and is organized into five parts: echinoderm paleoecology, functional morphology, and paleoecology; evolutionary paleoecology; morphology for refined phylogenetic studies; innovative applications of data encoded in echinoderms; and information on new crinoid data sets.

Book Predator Prey Interactions in the Fossil Record

Download or read book Predator Prey Interactions in the Fossil Record written by Patricia H. Kelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword: "Predator-prey interactions are among the most significant of all organism-organism interactions....It will only be by compiling and evaluating data on predator-prey relations as they are recorded in the fossil record that we can hope to tease apart their role in the tangled web of evolutionary interaction over time. This volume, compiled by a group of expert specialists on the evidence of predator-prey interactions in the fossil record, is a pioneering effort to collate the information now accumulating in this important field. It will be a standard reference on which future study of one of the central dynamics of ecology as seen in the fossil record will be built." (Richard K. Bambach, Professor Emeritus, Virginia Tech, Associate of the Botanical Museum, Harvard University)

Book Earth and Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : John A. Talent
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-06-28
  • ISBN : 9048134285
  • Pages : 1104 pages

Download or read book Earth and Life written by John A. Talent and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-28 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the broad pattern of increasing biodiversity through time, and recurrent events of minor and major ecosphere reorganization. Intense scrutiny is devoted to the pattern of physical (including isotopic), sedimentary and biotic circumstances through the time intervals during which life crises occurred. These events affected terrestrial, lacustrine and estuarine ecosystems, locally and globally, but have affected continental shelf ecosystems and even deep ocean ecosystems. The pattern of these events is the backdrop against which modelling the pattern of future environmental change needs to be evaluated.
