This state of poverty carries with it various health issues, one of which is addiction to alcohol and illicit drugs. Within the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, it is estimated that more than one half of the homeless population have substance abuse problems. This research study asks: What are the effects of homelessness on health? Participants (n=6) were recruited from a substance abuse program within an inter-faith homeless service center. All were men, ranged in age from 30-50, five were African American and one was Caucasian. Participants had various health problems, such as: depression, post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Private, in-depth interviews were held for one hour, tape recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for emerging themes. Thirty codes revealed two themes: the stigma of homelessness; and health issues due to homelessness or addiction. Stigma was further deconstructed into appearance, isolation, and faulty notions. The health effects of homelessness or addiction included: lack of sleep, using jail as respite, poor nutrition, issues with oral health, and increased stress. Implications for research include raising awareness of general public to the severity of homelessness. Also, research reiterated the need for a holistic approach to substance abuse treatment, focusing not only on the physicality of addiction but also the emotional and psychological issues that manifest with living on the streets.
