Book Addiction and the Captive Will

Download or read book Addiction and the Captive Will written by Cynthia Geppert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-first century neuroscience has discovered that in some severe cases, addiction may so constrain human freedom that the will is only able to choose to use substances of abuse. At this advanced stage, substance use has become the primary driver of salience, co-opting and subsuming other moral priorities and human rewards. Scholars have investigated Aristotle's concept of akrasia as an ancient mirror of this understanding and there have been some preliminary discussions of Augustine's concept of the divided will as it bears on addiction. No detailed and comprehensive exploration of the work of Augustine has yet been undertaken as it relates to three contemporary models of addiction: the choice, learning, and brain disease models. Augustine's psychological awareness, his mastery of ancient theological and philosophical thinking, and his enormous and enduring influence on both Catholic and Protestant theology, make him an ideal subject for such research. This incisive book argues that Augustine's doctrine of the captive will offers a theological parallel of each of these contemporary models of addiction.

Christians today live in a world that is activity heavy and relationship light. The result is spiritual emptiness. We struggle to know what God wants from us and for us . . . and we’re unsure what a real relationship with God really looks like. But that was never God’s idea. HIS idea of faith is not about rules or religion— it’s about relationship. That’s where God tells us to start. In Romans 12, God gives us a clear picture of what Christians should look like at the root level. If you’re ready to move from “in” to “all in,” then you’re ready to become a Romans 12 Christian. The next steps of your journey toward true spirituality start here.

Book excerpt: "Conducts a dialogue between the early Christian theologian, Augustine of Hippo, and three modern models of addiction. The choice, learning, and brain disease models of addiction are examined in conversation with Augustine's insight in the Confessions into the mechanism of sin's subversion of the human will, apart from the grace of God. The book argues that Augustine's doctrine of the captive will most closely aligns with the brain disease model of addiction, and that his theology can bring a transcendent dimension both to the neuroscientific understanding of addiction and pathways out of it"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addiction to Comfort SECRETS OF ALWAYS MAKING APPROPRIATE MORAL CHOICES? In regard to all Addictions, I find it is impossible to arrive at an objective and constant standard of truth and morality without bringing Jesus Christ onto the podium. If an important standard of truth and morality exists, it cannot be the product of the sinner, or it will not be impartial or decisive. It must be the result of a far greater Mind, that of the Christ Jesus. If a constant and unchanging truth exists, it must be beyond human timelines, or it will not be continuous, it must be everlasting. If a universal choice of "right versus wrong" exists, it must go beyond individual understanding, or it will not be "universal". It must be above us all. However, absolute truth must be something or someone to free the addicted that is common to all humanity, and to creation. All is found in one person, and He Jesus Christ is the source of all truth. He is the secret of always making appropriate moral choices.....For in each conflict we have....positions' us in charge of determining what, is the correct moral choice we can put forward? If our instant thought and or our comeback is that of self-deceptive "ends justify the means", your determination is flawed. If your response may be however difficult, but you choose to preserve and improve not only your own human life, integrity and self-respect, you have chosen not to take over Gods role as Creator and Sovereignty over your conflict. Be hopeful and please God, but never partake as God. ...... RICHARD KAY

Book The Augsburg Confession

  • Author : Timothy J. Wengert
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2020-09-01

Download or read book The Augsburg Confession written by Timothy J. Wengert and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Augsburg Confession is the single most-important confession of faith among Lutherans today. However, it is often taught either from a historical perspective or from a dogmatic one. Yet the context out of which it arose was far more practical and lively: marked from the outset as confessions of faith in the face of fierce opposition and threats. The original princely signers, while clearly outlining the teaching of their churches, were also staking their lives on the witness to the gospel that had been emanating from Wittenberg since 1517, when Martin Luther first published his Ninety-Five Theses. By situating both the history and the theology of this document within the practice and life of faith, Timothy J. Wengert shows just how relevant the Confession's witness is for today's Lutheran parishes and their leaders by unlocking how its articles can shape and strengthen the church's witness today.
