Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES and LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER “Brilliant . . . riveting, scary, cogent, and cleverly argued.”—Beth Macy, author of Dopesick, as heard on Fresh Air This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting . . . The increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption. In Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author, explores the exciting new scientific discoveries that explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain . . . and what to do about it. Condensing complex neuroscience into easy-to-understand metaphors, Lembke illustrates how finding contentment and connectedness means keeping dopamine in check. The lived experiences of her patients are the gripping fabric of her narrative. Their riveting stories of suffering and redemption give us all hope for managing our consumption and transforming our lives. In essence, Dopamine Nation shows that the secret to finding balance is combining the science of desire with the wisdom of recovery.

Book The Social Addict For the Out Of Control Social Media User

Download or read book The Social Addict For the Out Of Control Social Media User written by Alan D. Weber and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-03-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you think that you're addicted to social media? Why or why not?Is there even such a thing as a social media addiction? If so, what are its signs or symptoms, as well its effects? And what about its interventions? Also called Social Networking Addiction or SNA, social media addiction is the latest form of addiction to have emerged as a result of technological advancement brought about by the Internet. But even if it's considered new in the realm of clinical sciences, it's actually an all too familiar phenomenon in the behavioral sciences. That's because there's a marked difference between someone who does social media networking for leisure, someone who does it for a living, and someone who does it out of compulsion. For the first one, social media networking is just another optional activity to pass the time. For the second one, social media networking is a way to earn money. But for the last one, social media networking is more of a response to an underlying problem. While social media addiction is referred to as an 'addiction, ' there are currently no standard clinical or scientific ways in place to warrant for its diagnosis. Lately, a number of online tests have spawned in order for people to know if they are addicted to social media networking or not. The reliability of these pop tests are undetermined but they sure have become a fad.Even then, people are curious if their behavior as they relate with social media networking can be classified as an addiction, or something more saliently related to it. That begs the question: how can one not know that he or she is addicted to something? Awareness is an important factor in acknowledging a looming addictive behavior - something that online pop tests cannot 'test.'So granted that if social media addiction is relevant in the realms of medical and social sciences, then it must follow that it has its own signs, symptoms, effects, and interventions. In the same way, it must also have its own set of literature to help shed light on the idea that one can indeed become a social media addict. That set of literature is found in this book. While there is a lack of research work and clinical studies on the subject of social media addiction, this book explores the available theoretical concepts out there. You'll learn about the history of four of the biggest social media platforms in the world and get to know more about what's good and what's bad on social media. In addition, you'll also discover the theoretical perspectives of addiction in general and how they apply to social media addiction. From these theories, you'll get to know the symptoms, the effects, and the causes of social media addiction. You'll be surprised to learn that you may be already exhibiting such symptoms and effects. Finally, this book offers practical intervention measures in order to minimize the possibility of you becoming a social media addict - or how to overcome such an addiction, if you consider yourself as an addict. In the end, this book seeks to inform, to educate, and to offer ways to help young people out there realize that there's more to the world than scrolling through their social media feed.Thank you, and I hope you'll learn a lot from this book

Book Drug Dealer MD

  • Author : Anna Lembke

Download or read book Drug Dealer MD written by Anna Lembke and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disturbing connection between well-meaning physicians and the prescription drug epidemic. Three out of four people addicted to heroin probably started on a prescription opioid, according to the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the United States alone, 16,000 people die each year as a result of prescription opioid overdose. But perhaps the most frightening aspect of the prescription drug epidemic is that it’s built on well-meaning doctors treating patients with real problems. In Drug Dealer, MD, Dr. Anna Lembke uncovers the unseen forces driving opioid addiction nationwide. Combining case studies from her own practice with vital statistics drawn from public policy, cultural anthropology, and neuroscience, she explores the complex relationship between doctors and patients, the science of addiction, and the barriers to successfully addressing drug dependence and addiction. Even when addiction is recognized by doctors and their patients, she argues, many doctors don’t know how to treat it, connections to treatment are lacking, and insurance companies won’t pay for rehab. Full of extensive interviews—with health care providers, pharmacists, social workers, hospital administrators, insurance company executives, journalists, economists, advocates, and patients and their families—Drug Dealer, MD, is for anyone whose life has been touched in some way by addiction to prescription drugs. Dr. Lembke gives voice to the millions of Americans struggling with prescription drugs while singling out the real culprits behind the rise in opioid addiction: cultural narratives that promote pills as quick fixes, pharmaceutical corporations in cahoots with organized medicine, and a new medical bureaucracy focused on the bottom line that favors pills, procedures, and patient satisfaction over wellness. Dr. Lembke concludes that the prescription drug epidemic is a symptom of a faltering health care system, the solution for which lies in rethinking how health care is delivered.

Book excerpt: “Irresistible is a fascinating and much needed exploration of one of the most troubling phenomena of modern times.” —Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times bestsellers David and Goliath and Outliers “One of the most mesmerizing and important books I’ve read in quite some time. Alter brilliantly illuminates the new obsessions that are controlling our lives and offers the tools we need to rescue our businesses, our families, and our sanity.” —Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take Welcome to the age of behavioral addiction—an age in which half of the American population is addicted to at least one behavior. We obsess over our emails, Instagram likes, and Facebook feeds; we binge on TV episodes and YouTube videos; we work longer hours each year; and we spend an average of three hours each day using our smartphones. Half of us would rather suffer a broken bone than a broken phone, and Millennial kids spend so much time in front of screens that they struggle to interact with real, live humans. In this revolutionary book, Adam Alter, a professor of psychology and marketing at NYU, tracks the rise of behavioral addiction, and explains why so many of today's products are irresistible. Though these miraculous products melt the miles that separate people across the globe, their extraordinary and sometimes damaging magnetism is no accident. The companies that design these products tweak them over time until they become almost impossible to resist. By reverse engineering behavioral addiction, Alter explains how we can harness addictive products for the good—to improve how we communicate with each other, spend and save our money, and set boundaries between work and play—and how we can mitigate their most damaging effects on our well-being, and the health and happiness of our children. Adam Alter's previous book, Drunk Tank Pink: And Other Unexpected Forces that Shape How We Think, Feel, and Behave is available in paperback from Penguin.

Download or read book InTraders 2019 Academic studies in social human and administrative sciences written by Hakan Murat ARSLAN and published by Hiperlink eğit.ilet.yay.san.tic.ve ltd.sti.. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is an analysis of the connections established between the intercultural phenomenon and trade. Both intercultural contacts and commerce appeared and developed due to humans’ mobility and their basis was exchange (either spiritual or material). Since the dawn of history people travelled a lot and exchanged knowledge and goods (for instance, silk was brought to Europe by two Byzantine monks from China, in 550 C.E.), so, travel generated interculturality and trade. Intercultural contacts can be positive (trade, for example) or negative (wars). One can say that interculturality is a trait of the human species. Many innovations in different fields spread due to intercultural exchange, globalisation is also based on cross-cultural or intercultural contacts. The Industrial Revolution and colonialism represented the main causes of the intensification of intercultural contacts which generated an increase in international trade. In contemporary human society, this kind of relationships is essential for development in any activity field. The globalised trade in nowadays world was generated by interculturality and World Trade Organization was founded to facilitate it and to create an international network; the technological evolution and the modern means of transport enhanced the relations between different cultures. Interculturality is an umbrella concept covering a diversity of domains: communication, religion, education, anthropology, literature etc. In this paper, we try to answer to the following question: “How can interculturality influence trade or vice versa?” by pointing out the main aspects of the analysed phenomena and their links. To accomplish this task we shall make use of the historical method and imagology.
