Book Adaptive Voltage Control Methods Using Distributed Energy Resources

Download or read book Adaptive Voltage Control Methods Using Distributed Energy Resources written by Huijuan Li and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed energy resources (DE) with power electronics interfaces and logic control using local measurements are capable of providing reactive power related to ancillary system services. In particular, local voltage regulation has drawn much attention in regards to power system reliability and voltage stability, especially from past major cascading outages. This dissertation addresses the challenges of controlling the DEs to regulate the local voltage in distribution systems. First, an adaptive voltage control method has been proposed to dynamically modify the control parameters of a single DE to respond to system changes such that the ideal response can be achieved. Theoretical analysis shows that a corresponding formulation of the dynamic control parameters exists; hence, the adaptive control method is theoretically solid. Also, the field experiment test results at the Distributed Energy Communications and Controls (DECC) Laboratory in single DE regulation case confirm the effectiveness of this method. Then, control methods have been discussed in the case of multiple DEs regulating voltages considering the availability of communications among all the DEs. When communications are readily available, a method is proposed to directly calculate the needed adaptive change of the DE control parameters in order to achieve the ideal response. When there is no communication available, an approach to adaptively and incrementally adjust the control parameters based on the local voltage changes is proposed. Since the impact from other DEs is implicitly considered in this approach, multiple DEs can collectively regulate voltages closely following the ideal response curve. Simulation results show that each method, with or without communications, can satisfy the fast response requirement for operational use without causing oscillation, inefficiency or system equipment interference, although the case with communication can perform even faster and more accurate. Since the proposed adaptive voltage regulation method in the case of multiple DEs without communication, has a high tolerance to real-time data shortage and can still provide good enough performance, it is more suitable for broad utility applications. The approach of multiple DEs with communication can be considered as a high-end solution, which gives faster and more precise results at a higher cost.

Book Sensitivity Based Volt Var Control and Loss Optimization

Download or read book Sensitivity Based Volt Var Control and Loss Optimization written by Anurag R. Katti and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to control voltage at different points in a distribution grid to within a specified range and minimize power loss. Sensitivity coefficients are used to determine the reactive power dispatch of distributed generators connected in the grid. Power loss is also represented in terms of sensitivity coefficients to simultaneously optimize the voltage profile and power loss. Two variants of the optimization algorithm are discussed - a centralized control algorithm based on the complete state of the system and a decentralized algorithm using only the local information. To study the influence of the location of generators in the grid, the properties of sensitivity and its variation for different generator locations are studied. Two different sensitivity coefficients - current and power loss sensitivity with respect to location of generator are developed from the voltage sensitivity values. The use of these sensitivity coefficients in siting and sizing of generators are discussed. And finally the influence of the number of generators and penetration of distributed generation on voltage and distribution loss are discussed through simulations.

Book Voltage Control Based on Fuzzy Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization

Download or read book Voltage Control Based on Fuzzy Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization written by Husam Shaheen and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping an acceptable voltage profile at the system buses is a challenging and a system-wide task. Voltage-control is rooted in rescheduling of the reactive power flow in the lines of power system. Despite the fact that many voltage-control techniques are available to electric power system operators, these systems around the world have been subjected to voltage instability problems and voltage collapses that cause in many occasions complete system breakdowns. In this Book, a new voltage control methodology is presented, which is originated on the use of multi- objective function based on fuzzy set theory and adaptive particle swarm optimization. This methodology is applied to get a solution to the mathematical model that represents the voltage- control problem of a power system. The purpose is to ensure acceptable voltage profile and to minimize both the voltage deviation and the real power loss. The IEEE 30-Bus system model is used to employ the suggested technique to the mathematical model built for the new voltage-control methodology using Matlab code. The findings will be documented and compared with other voltage-control strategies.
