Book excerpt: I study how attitudes towards risk and risky behavior adapt over the long-run to changes in risk in individuals' environments. In the first chapter I build a dynamic model of choice in which agents' endogenous foreground risk-taking adapts to evolving beliefs about exogenous background risk. The key features of this model are that foreground and background risk are substitutes, and that the agent learns about both the mean and variance of the background risk from observing its realizations over their lifetime. My model makes sharp predictions about the dynamics of risk-taking, the three most important being that (1) risk aversion increases monotonically in variance increases relative to the prior variance, and is (2) decreasing and (3) convex in mean increases about the prior mean. In the subsequent two chapters I test the predictions of my model for two sources of background risk, using large-scale panel surveys from Indonesia and Mexico containing repeat elicited measures of risk aversion for the same subjects years apart. In chapter two, coauthored with Daniela Vidart, we link changes in measured risk aversion to state-level real GDP growth time series capturing subjects' lifetime macroeconomic experiences. In line with the model's predictions we find that measured risk aversion increases in growth volatility and decreases in mean growth. These findings are robust to controlling for changes in subjects' personal economic circumstances and experiences of violence and natural disasters. Decreases in measured risk aversion correlate with substantial increases in risky behavior in the domains of health, migration, and occupational choice. In chapter three, coauthored with Wesley Howden, we link changes in measured risk aversion to state-level temperature and precipitation time series measuring subjects' lifetime experiences of climate change. We find that measured risk aversion increases in the volatility of temperature in Indonesia and precipitation in Mexico, that it decreases in the mean of temperature in both countries and precipitation in Mexico, and that it is convex in the mean of temperature in Indonesia. These findings are robust to the inclusion of controls. Decreases in measured risk aversion correlate with large changes in migration, occupational choice, and agricultural investment behavior.

The risk motivation theory is a dynamic state-trait model incorporating physiological, emotional and cognitive components of risk perception, processing and planning. If a deficit exists between desired and perceived risk, risk compensation behavior results. A feedback loop provides new information for the next perception-motivation-behavior process. Assumptions were tested and support was found with 120 subjects in a longitudinal study. The concepts and findings are discussed in relation to psychological theories and their meaning for our daily lives.

Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: Adaptive Design and Risk Management, MOP 140, provides guidance for and contributes to the developing or enhancing of methods for infrastructure analysis and design in a world in which risk profiles are changing and can be projected with varying degrees of uncertainty requiring a new design philosophy to meet this challenge. The underlying approaches in this manual of practice (MOP) are based on probabilistic methods for quantitative risk analysis, and the design framework provided focuses on identifying and analyzing low-regret, adaptive strategies to make a project more resilient. Beginning with an overview of the driving forces and hazards associated with a changing climate, subsequent chapters in MOP 140 provide observational methods, illustrative examples, and case studies; estimation of extreme events particularly related to precipitation with guidance on monitoring and measuring methods; flood design criteria and the development of project design flood elevations; computational methods of determining flood loads; adaptive design and adaptive risk management in the context of life-cycle engineering and economics; and climate resilience technologies. The concept of adaptive aspirations, as discussed in Cyert and March's Behavioral Theory of the Firm, has long been a topic of interest in both fields. Moreover, many studies in strategy have focused on risk and/or extreme performance. In the current paper, we build on earlier models of adaptive aspirations. We introduce into the models a new risk preference function that incorporates changes in risk preference at extremes of performance. Based on empirical studies and the managerial literature, we also introduce alternative strategies for setting reference groups. Simulations of the resulting models suggest important differences in outcomes from earlier studies that invite further empirical investigation. These simulations also have significant implications for managerial goal setting.
