Book excerpt: Building in existing fabric requires more than practical solutions and stylistic skills. The adaptive reuse of buildings, where changes in the structure go along with new programs and functions, poses the fundamental question of how the past should be included in the design for the future. On the background of long years of teaching and publishing, and using vivid imagery from Frankenstein to Rem Koolhaas and beyond, the author provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural design for adaptive reuse projects. History and theory, building typology, questions of materials and construction, aspects of preservation, urban as well as interior design are dealt with in ways that allow to approach adaptive reuse as a design practice field of its own right.

Book Adaptive Reuse of the Built Heritage

Download or read book Adaptive Reuse of the Built Heritage written by Bie Plevoets and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive reuse – the process of repairing and restoring existing buildings for new or continued use – is becoming an essential part of architectural practice. As mounting demographic, economic, and ecological challenges limit opportunities for new construction, architects increasingly focus on transforming and adapting existing buildings. This book introduces adaptive reuse as a new discipline. It provides students and professionals with the understanding and the tools they need to develop innovative and creative approaches, helping them to rethink and redesign existing buildings – a skill which is becoming more and more important. Part I outlines the history of adaptive reuse and explains the concepts and methods that lie behind new design processes and contemporary practice. Part II consists of a wide range of case studies, representing different time periods and strategies for intervention. Iconic adaptive reuse projects such as the Caixa Forum in Madrid and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam are discussed alongside less famous and spontaneous transformations such as the Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin, in addition to projects from Italy, Spain, Croatia, Belgium, Poland, and the USA. Featuring over 100 high-quality color illustrations, Adaptive Reuse of the Built Heritage is essential reading for students and professionals in architecture, interior design, heritage conservation, and urban planning.

Book Adaptive Reuse as a Means for Socially Sustainable re development

Download or read book Adaptive Reuse as a Means for Socially Sustainable re development written by Ian Gauger and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Two trends in building today are urbanization and a focus on sustainability. Concerns about sustainability, especially in building and city design, have been growing for decades now, and are being driven forward by fears over the effects of climate change. Urbanization is rapid population growth in many cities around the world caused by an influx of people from suburban, exurban, and rural communities. In some parts of the United States which experienced suburbanization during the middle part of the 20th century, this is a return of population to the city, or a reurbanization. This growth has led to a need for new development, with a focus on sustainability, in areas where past developments already exist. For these new developments to occur unused or underused buildings and sites are targeted for either adaptive reuse or slated to be demolished and replaced. Whereas the environmental and financial sustainability of different types of building design and construction have repeatedly been the focus of studies, the effects on social sustainability have been, for the most part, neglected. This paper compares the effects of adaptive reuse development with new development on issues which pertain to the social sustainability of a community, specifically community identity and local pride. The goal is to better understand the effects of different types of development on the surrounding community to better direct future redevelopment in a socially sustainable way. Research was conducted by surveying residents of Rochester, New York, on six selected developments, as well as their general impressions of the Rochester community. Data from the surveys was analyzed to better understand if, and to what extent, adaptive reuse and new construction developments have affected the community identity and local pride of the surrounding area. This research shows that adaptive reuse better establishes or retains community identity and does more to foster local pride than new construction, and therefore should be given extra consideration when redeveloping urban neighborhoods."--Abstract.

Book Building Adaptation

Download or read book Building Adaptation written by James Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As existing buildings age, nearly half of all construction activity in Britain is related to maintenance, refurbishment and conversions. Building adaptation is an activity that continues to make a significant contribution to the workload of the construction industry. Given its importance to sustainable construction, the proportion of adaptation works in relation to new build is likely to remain substantial for the foreseeable future, especially in the developed parts of the world. Building Adaptation, Second Edition is intended as a primer on the physical changes that can affect older properties. It demonstrates the general principles, techniques, and processes needed when existing buildings must undergo alteration, conversion, extension, improvement, or refurbishment. The publication of the first edition of Building Adaptation reflected the upsurge in refurbishment work. The book quickly established itself as one of the core texts for building surveying students and others on undergraduate and postgraduate built environment courses. This new edition continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to all the key issues relating to the adaptation of buildings. It deals with any work to a building over and above maintenance to change its capacity, function or performance.

Book excerpt: More Americans live in urban areas today than ever before. Factors such as white flight, the relocation of manufacturing overseas, and rural-to-urban migration has resulted in the major shift in where people live. Consequently, cities now are left to grapple with stockpiles of vacant buildings and land. At the same time, the U.S. is facing an acute housing affordability crisis. Inflation is outpacing the growth of household income, the national minimum wage is inadequate in providing means to live from, and the existing federal programs, focused on resolving the affordable housing crisis, are not nearly meeting existing demands. American cities today are therefore, struggling to address both the issue of the proliferation of vacant abandoned buildings as well as to provide affordable, quality housing to all their residents. Kansas City, Kansas is not immune to the housing affordability crisis wreaking havoc across the country and has its own set of issues that need to be resolved. In this report, I explore the application of adaptive reuse for quality, affordable housing in Kansas City, Kansas. In order to provide a holistic perspective to this exploration, I use case studies and semi-structured interviews with representatives from Detroit, Michigan and Rochester, New York. These two sites were chosen for their explicit use of adaptive reuse for affordable housing and adopted or proposed policy on the topic. In order to form a deeper understanding of the issues that KCK faces, I conducted semi-structured interviews with planners, preservationists, and an adaptive reuse developer. The in-depth research and discussions with representatives from each case study location and KCK, are used to present recommendations for future operations within Kansas City pertaining to adaptive reuse for affordable housing. These recommendations include conducting a housing conditions and market study, establishing a team to monitor and report on federally financed developments, pairing historic preservation and affordable housing, adopting explicit policies and zoning ordinances for adaptive reuse, and considering tactical preservation for incremental reuse.

Book When a Factory Becomes a Home

Download or read book When a Factory Becomes a Home written by Chris van Uffelen and published by Braun Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of the housing shortage and building dereliction can be successfully countered by the reactivation and conversion of existing real estate in urban and rural settings. An approach that is also worthwhile in economic, ecological and urban planning terms. Today, a great number of very diverse ideas, concepts and interventions fill forgotten and abandoned buildings with new life. The sensitive and respectful handling of the existing structures is as important as the creative addition to the old buildings. As a result, the most exceptional and unique residential spaces are created from old silos or written off office buildings, vacant churches, former railway stations or obsolete infrastructure buildings through the creative appropriation of the existing substance. This volume shows the exciting variety of reuse possibilities and provides new insights into and perspectives on a highly topical subject.

Book The Adaptive Reuse Handbook

Download or read book The Adaptive Reuse Handbook written by Robert W. Burchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1981 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of change in the uses and occupancy characteristics of cities has caught urban managers off guard. The abandonment of central city realty in many locations is a fact which cannot be overlooked. Yet within this reality, there are the seeds of hope, not of return to things past, but to a series of new constructive efforts. Bridging the gap between the city and/or neighborhood of yesterday and the potentials of tomorrow requires a firm grasp of all the many required tools - in terms of legal, physical and strategic planning. It is to these necessities that this handbook is dedicated. The Adaptive Reuse Handbook is a basic urban revitalization manual for city managers, zoning administrators, urban planners, architects, lay planning/zoning board members, and interested citizens. The handbook consists of procedures to gain control of, and positively reemploy, abandoned urban real estate. This is the non-architectural side of surplus property conversion - the legal and administrative procedures necessary to garner structures and land and prepare them for reuse. This book is divided into four sections: planning/inventory; property control; property management and disposition; and physical revitalization. Each section presents procedures and field experience to deal with a particular urban revitalization activity: property inventory, abandonment early warning systems, reuse planning, interim/permanent property control, tax sale/foreclosure, property management, property disposition, and physical revitalization. This is a must have reference work for anyone in the field of urban studies.

Book Architectural Regeneration

Download or read book Architectural Regeneration written by Aylin Orbasli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-08-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and detailed overview of the active regeneration, rehabilitation and revitalisation of architectural heritage. The combined processes of globalisation, urbanisation, environmental change, population growth and rapid technological development have resulted in an increasingly complex, dynamic and interrelated world, in which concerns about the meaning of cultural heritage and identity continue to grow. As the need for culturally and environmentally sustainable design grows, the challenge for professionals involved in the management of inherited built environments is to respond to this ever-changing context in a critical, dynamic and creative way. Our knowledge and understanding of the principles, approaches and methods to sustainably adapt existing buildings and places is rapidly expanding. Architectural Regeneration contributes to this knowledge-base through a holistic approach that links policy with practice and establishes a theoretical framework within which to understand architectural regeneration. It includes extensive case studies of the regeneration, rehabilitation and revitalisation of architectural heritage from around the world. Different scales and contexts of architectural regeneration are discussed, including urban, suburban, rural and temporary. At a time when regeneration policy has shifted to the recognition that ‘heritage matters’ and that the historic environment and creative industries are a vital driver of regeneration, an increasing workload of architectural practices concerns the refurbishment, adaptive re-use or extension of existing buildings. As a result, this book is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students of architecture, historic conservation, urban and environmental design, sustainability, and urban regeneration, as well as for practitioners and decision makers working in those fields.
