Book Adapting Image and Video Compression Techniques to Power System Phasor Measurement Data

Download or read book Adapting Image and Video Compression Techniques to Power System Phasor Measurement Data written by Sowmya Acharya and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power systems across the world are deploying larger numbers of phasor measurement units (PMUs) in both transmission and distribution networks. Data from PMUs are being used for wide-area measurement and control, state estimation, improved security and reliability of the network, and other applications related to power system protection and automation. As PMUs generate large amounts of data in short time intervals, transmitting and archiving the data for future becomes challenging. An attractive solution to this problem is to compress the raw data using efficient compression algorithms. Various lossless and lossy compression algorithms have been proposed in literature for compressing PMU data. Most of these methods treat the input data as generic datasets and apply variants of existing file compression algorithms. This report investigates the possibility of utilizing knowledge of characteristics of the power system to improve the compression. Image compression algorithms like JPEG achieve compression by exploiting features specific to images such as similarity of nearby pixels, smooth variation of intensity across the image, etc. Various steps involved in the compression like the YCbCr transformation, quantization, and encoding are designed by considering these features and the way we perceive images. Similarly, video can be compressed by treating the data as a stream of images and exploiting similarity of frames across time. In many ways, arrays of chronological measurements of power system quantities are analogous to an image or a stream of images. Specifically, the spatial and temporal correlations inherent in these measurements make the data amenable to compression using algorithms inspired from image and video compression. This report outlines PMU compression algorithms based on JPEG and MPEG-like compression. The suitability of other image compression algorithms is also explored. Two orthogonal transformations - covariance-based and power flow Jacobian-based - are proposed which help to take advantage of the spatial and temporal correlations. A delta-encoding scheme combined with quantization techniques is developed for handling compression of streaming PMU data. The effectiveness of the compression algorithms may be judged by the space savings, and in the case of lossy algorithms, accuracy of data reconstruction. Appropriate performance metrics are explored here with the goal of quantifying performance in ways that capture the engineering requirements in power systems. The proposed algorithms are applied in numerical case studies for compressing data from standard test systems. The algorithms can be applied to data pertaining to both steady-state and dynamic operation of the power system, though as will be illustrated, these different operating regimes give rise to different time scales and compression characteristics. Similarly, the algorithms perform well for different types of measurements, duration of data streams, and sampling frequencies. While federal regulations surrounding Critical Energy Infrastructure Information (CEII) limit researchers' access to real-world US power grid data, or impose onerous non-disclosure requirements when such data is shared with universities, a limited set of anonymized real-world data has been obtained for testing here. The algorithms have been tested on this real PMU data as collected by a utility. Preliminary examinations have been made on the effect of artefacts such as noise, missing and erroneous data on the compression ratios and accuracy of reconstruction.

Book Image and Video Compression

Download or read book Image and Video Compression written by Madhuri A. Joshi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image and video signals require large transmission bandwidth and storage, leading to high costs. The data must be compressed without a loss or with a small loss of quality. Thus, efficient image and video compression algorithms play a significant role in the storage and transmission of data. Image and Video Compression: Fundamentals, Techniques, and Applications explains the major techniques for image and video compression and demonstrates their practical implementation using MATLAB® programs. Designed for students, researchers, and practicing engineers, the book presents both basic principles and real practical applications. In an accessible way, the book covers basic schemes for image and video compression, including lossless techniques and wavelet- and vector quantization-based image compression and digital video compression. The MATLAB programs enable readers to gain hands-on experience with the techniques. The authors provide quality metrics used to evaluate the performance of the compression algorithms. They also introduce the modern technique of compressed sensing, which retains the most important part of the signal while it is being sensed.

Book Real Time Video Compression

Download or read book Real Time Video Compression written by Raymond Westwater and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-10-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-Time Video Compression: Techniques and Algorithms introduces the XYZ video compression technique, which operates in three dimensions, eliminating the overhead of motion estimation. First, video compression standards, MPEG and H.261/H.263, are described. They both use asymmetric compression algorithms, based on motion estimation. Their encoders are much more complex than decoders. The XYZ technique uses a symmetric algorithm, based on the Three-Dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (3D-DCT). 3D-DCT was originally suggested for compression about twenty years ago; however, at that time the computational complexity of the algorithm was too high, it required large buffer memory, and was not as effective as motion estimation. We have resurrected the 3D-DCT-based video compression algorithm by developing several enhancements to the original algorithm. These enhancements make the algorithm feasible for real-time video compression in applications such as video-on-demand, interactive multimedia, and videoconferencing. The demonstrated results, presented in this book, suggest that the XYZ video compression technique is not only a fast algorithm, but also provides superior compression ratios and high quality of the video compared to existing standard techniques, such as MPEG and H.261/H.263. The elegance of the XYZ technique is in its simplicity, which leads to inexpensive VLSI implementation of any XYZ codec. Real-Time Video Compression: Techniques and Algorithms can be used as a text for graduate students and researchers working in the area of real-time video compression. In addition, the book serves as an essential reference for professionals in the field.

Book Intelligent Image and Video Compression

Download or read book Intelligent Image and Video Compression written by David Bull and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent Image and Video Compression: Communicating Pictures, Second Edition explains the requirements, analysis, design and application of a modern video coding system. It draws on the authors' extensive academic and professional experience in this field to deliver a text that is algorithmically rigorous yet accessible, relevant to modern standards and practical. It builds on a thorough grounding in mathematical foundations and visual perception to demonstrate how modern image and video compression methods can be designed to meet the rate-quality performance levels demanded by today's applications and users, in the context of prevailing network constraints. "David Bull and Fan Zhang have written a timely and accessible book on the topic of image and video compression. Compression of visual signals is one of the great technological achievements of modern times, and has made possible the great successes of streaming and social media and digital cinema. Their book, Intelligent Image and Video Compression covers all the salient topics ranging over visual perception, information theory, bandpass transform theory, motion estimation and prediction, lossy and lossless compression, and of course the compression standards from MPEG (ranging from H.261 through the most modern H.266, or VVC) and the open standards VP9 and AV-1. The book is replete with clear explanations and figures, including color where appropriate, making it quite accessible and valuable to the advanced student as well as the expert practitioner. The book offers an excellent glossary and as a bonus, a set of tutorial problems. Highly recommended! --Al Bovik - An approach that combines algorithmic rigor with practical implementation using numerous worked examples - Explains how video compression methods exploit statistical redundancies, natural correlations, and knowledge of human perception to improve performance - Uses contemporary video coding standards (AVC, HEVC and VVC) as a vehicle for explaining block-based compression - Provides broad coverage of important topics such as visual quality assessment and video streaming
