Download or read book Adaptation and Resilience written by Bonnie G. Colby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America's arid southwest, climate change will occur in the context of already-keen competition for water for agriculture, urban growth, electricity generation, water-based recreation, and environmental protections. This book explores the challenges that climate change and variability pose for water and energy managers and users, communities, and policy makers in the arid Southwest and demonstrates the application of economic methods to address these challenges. It provides valuable tools for both those interested in resource management and climate change, and those seeking to understand how economic methods can be used to analyze contemporary social problems and craft appropriate responses. The book considers both adaptation to long-term climate change and more immediate issues of water and electricity management in the face of inter-annual climate variability and drought. Thus, no matter what one's perspective on long-run climate change projections, the book provides useful lessons for some of the region's most pressing resource management problems.

Download or read book Adaptation to Climate Change through Water Resources Management written by Dominic Stucker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impacts of human-induced climate change are largely mediated by water, such as alterations in precipitation and glacial melt patterns, variations in river flow, increased occurrence of droughts and floods, and sea level rise in densely populated coastal areas. Such phenomena impact both urban and rural communities in developed, emerging, and developing countries. Taking a systems approach, this book analyzes evidence from 26 countries and identifies common barriers and bridges for local adaptation to climate change through water resources management. It includes a global set of case studies from places experiencing increased environmental and social pressure due to population growth, development and migration, including in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America. All chapters consider the crosscutting themes of adaptive capacity, equity, and sustainability. These point to resilient water allocation policies and practices that are capable of protecting social and environmental interests, whilst ensuring the efficient use of an often-scarce resource.

Download or read book Climate Change Disaster and Adaptations written by Azizur Rahman Siddiqui and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines how local communities respond and adapt to ecological changes and disasters resulting from climate change. The main aim of the book is to understand the range of human responses to ecological change and to contextualise the reasons for adopting any particular adaptive strategy by a community. Through the help of specific case studies presented as individual chapters, the book aims to find out whether adaptation due to environmental stress is an individual decision and, therefore, is an isolated phenomenon, or if resilience and adaptation are part of the same action paradigm of society as a whole in response to environmental change. Of particular interest are the case studies of climate change or disasters that have rendered the site unsuitable for the return of its community at present, and thus necessitated the relocation of such communities to new locations. The case studies in the book focus on regions in India, but cover different parts of the world as well, and address concepts of resilience, vulnerability, risk, adaptation, and mitigation. The book will be useful for students and researchers in the fields of geography, disaster management, environmental science, and anthropology.

Download or read book Climate change drought and agriculture in Small Island Developing States written by Nisi, N. and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-08-05 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in agricultural and environmental practices can contribute to the emergence of agricultural drought conditions. Unsustainable land-use practices, such as soil degradation, deforestation, and the destruction of wetlands, can lead to decreased water availability and increased runoff. Additionally, certain agricultural practices like large-scale irrigation and the cultivation of water-intensive plant species can further deplete water resources, leaving less water available for other purposes and diminishing groundwater levels. In Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such challenges can easily become critical vulnerabilities. Their remoteness and sensitive ecosystems enhance their exposure to natural hazards, while their limited access to resources and high import costs often leave them with limited opportunities for economic diversification. The report, a result of the collaboration between FAO and IIED, sheds light on the critical challenges of the agriculture sector in SIDS and provides insightful recommendations stemming from the broad consultations carried out in selected countries. It identifies key areas for policy interventions and technical approaches and supports stakeholders in defining effective measures for drought risk resilience through improved land and water management.

Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation Actions in Bangladesh written by Rajib Shaw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book outlines the climate change adaptation (CCA) actions in Bangladesh drawing examples and lessons from different projects and programs in the country. The content is based on a selection of available documents, a consultative workshop with the academicians from different universities undertaking higher education on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, and the editors’ own knowledge and experience in the field. The book has four parts. Part I gives the details of climate change impacts, providing the scenarios, negotiations, and specific impacts on sea-level rise and the health sectors. Part II focuses on climate change strategy and action plans. Part III covers socio-economic impacts in terms of economic and environmental costs. Part IV focuses on adaptive actions for agriculture, livelihoods, and integrated approaches in agriculture and fisheries. Part V deals with climate-change governance issues. The primary target groups for this book are students and researchers in the fields of environment, disaster risk reduction, and climate change studies. The book will provide them with a good idea of the current trend of research in the field and will furnish basic knowledge on this important topic in Bangladesh. Another target group comprises practitioners and policy makers, who will be able to apply collective knowledge to policy and decision making.
