Book ADAPTATION TO THE PULLET REARING ENVIRONMENT BY PROVIDING LIGHTING DURING EMBRYO DEVELOPMENT

Download or read book ADAPTATION TO THE PULLET REARING ENVIRONMENT BY PROVIDING LIGHTING DURING EMBRYO DEVELOPMENT written by Korala Watthe Gedara Nilakshi Dhanushka Kumari Abeysinghe and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, it was hypothesized that providing a photoperiod during incubation will positively affect the production performance of laying hens. In the current study 640 eggs from each of two laying hen lines, (Lohmann Lite and Lohmann Brown) were incubated in 8 incubators as eighty eggs from each hen line/incubator. Blue, red and white LED lights were installed in 2 incubators each and 2 were left in the dark. In each lighting treatment the photoperiod used was 12L:12D. Hatched female chicks (n=384) were housed in 64 cages at 6 birds/cage and were provided with two post-hatch light regimes (long-days and short-days). During the study, production performance was monitored. Out of the four lighting treatments, red light reduced the total hatching time, improved chick quality, post-hatch growth rate and egg production. In conclusion, introduction of red LED to hatching eggs during incubation was beneficial to increase the production performance.

Book Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity

Download or read book Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity written by Paul L. Greenwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prenatal life is the period of maximal development in animals, and it is well recognised that factors that alter development can have profound effects on the embryonic, fetal and postnatal animal. Scientists involved in research on livestock productivity have for decades studied postnatal consequences of fetal development on productivity. Recently, however, there has been a surge in interest in how to manage prenatal development to enhance livestock health and productivity. This has occurred largely due to the studies that show human health in later life can be influenced by events during prenatal life, and establishment of the Fetal Origins and the Thrifty Phenotype Hypotheses. This book, Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity reviews phenotypic consequences of prenatal development, and provides details of mechanisms that underpin these effects in ruminants, pigs and poultry. The chapters have been divided into three parts: Quantification of prenatal effects on postnatal productivity, mechanistic bases of postnatal consequences of prenatal development and regulators of fetal and neonatal nutrient supply. Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity is a reference from which future research to improve the level of understanding and capacity to enhance productivity, health and efficiency of livestock in developing and developed countries will evolve. It is particularly timely given the development of molecular technologies that are providing new insight into regulation and consequences of growth and development of the embryo, fetus and neonate.

Book Thyroid Gland Development and Function

Download or read book Thyroid Gland Development and Function written by Guy Van Vliet and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As is the case in all fields of medicine, developmental endocrinology is now being studied at the molecular level. In this volume world-class researchers review the advances of the past decade in the study of normal and abnormal organogenesis of the thyroid gland and of the ontogeny of its function. They describe human thyroid development and its defects with the help of genetic studies in mouse models. Genetic defects of thyroid hormone synthesis are covered and their clinical relevance debated. The important field of thyroid cancer in the context of spontaneous occurrence and as part of familial neoplasia syndromes is described in detail. Finally, the important problem of environmental iodine deficiency which has emerged as a global public health concern is addressed. For the first time, a decade of work is presented in a concise and highly readable form. Offering valuable insight both for senior clinicians and graduate students, this publication will be of central interest to basic scientists involved in developmental biology as well as to pediatricians and endocrinologists dealing with patients with congenital disorders of thyroid function.

Book Achieving sustainable production of poultry meat Volume 2

Download or read book Achieving sustainable production of poultry meat Volume 2 written by Todd Applegate and published by Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To meet growing demand, the FAO has estimated that world poultry production needs to grow by 2-3% per year to 2030. Much of the increase in output already achieved has been as a result of improvements in commercial breeds combined with rearing in more intensive production systems. However, more intensive systems have increased the risk of transmission of animal diseases and zoonoses. Consumer expectations of sensory and nutritional quality have never been higher. At the same time consumers are more concerned about the environmental impact of poultry production as well as animal welfare. Drawing on an international range of expertise, this book reviews research on poultry breeding and nutrition. The first part of the book reviews how advances in genetics have impacted developments in breeding. Part 2 discusses ways of optimising poultry nutrition to ensure quality and sustainability in poultry meat production. Chapters review the use of feedstuffs and ingredients such as amino acids, enzymes and probiotics as well as feed formulation and safety. Achieving sustainable production of poultry meat Volume 2: Breeding and nutrition will be a standard reference for poultry and food scientists in universities, government and other research centres and companies involved in poultry production. It is accompanied by two further volumes which review safety, quality and sustainability as well as poultry health and welfare.
