Book Spray Fluorination of Fused Salt as a Uranium Recovery Process

Download or read book Spray Fluorination of Fused Salt as a Uranium Recovery Process written by J. D. Gabor and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spray fluorination may be used to recover uranium as the volatile hexafluoride from molten fluorides by spraying the salt into a fluorine atmosphere. This drop-wise liquid fused-salt fluoride volatility process applied to zirconium-matrix fuels, with the possible advantage of avoiding corrosive conditions involved in sparging. Experimental equipment was developed and tests were made for heat and mass transfer. From the data obtained, process design calculations indicated that a satisfactory equipment design is possible.

Book A FUSED SALT FLUORIDE VOLATILITY PROCESS FOR RECOVERY AND DECONTAMINATION OF URANIUM

Download or read book A FUSED SALT FLUORIDE VOLATILITY PROCESS FOR RECOVERY AND DECONTAMINATION OF URANIUM written by and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary chemical flowsheet is presented of a fluoride volatility process for recovering and decontaminating U from heterogeneous reactor fuels after dissolution in a fused salt. In laboratory work, a gross BETA decontamination factor of>10/sup 4/ was obtained in the fluorination of a UF/sub 4/-- NaF-- Zr F/sub 4/ melt by passing the product UF/sub 6/ through NaF at 650 deg C. The solubility of UF/sub 6/ in molten NaF--ZrF/sub 4/ was shown in kinetic studies to cause a lag in the evolution of UF/sub 6/ from the fluorinator. Corrosion of nickel in the fluorination step appeared to be 2 to 4 mils/hr during the time that U was present. The average corrosion rate over the process as a whole yvas less than 0.4 mil/hr. Book Recovery of Uranium from Highly Irradiated Reactor Fuel by a Fused Salt fluoride Volatility Process

Download or read book Recovery of Uranium from Highly Irradiated Reactor Fuel by a Fused Salt fluoride Volatility Process written by and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volatility processing is a promising new nonaqueous method for recovering uranium from heterogeneous reactor fuels containing zirconium and from molten fluoride fuels. it is potentially applicable to other types of reactor fuels not amenable to aqueous dissolution and subsequent solvent extraction processing. Amond the attractive features of the fused salt-fluoride volatility process are the small volume of the fission product waste, which is in solid form; the form of product, UF6; and virtual elimination of the need for criticality control. the main disadvantages are the high temperatures used and the high equipment corrosion. The paper discusses the processes under development.

Book Engineering Development of Fluid bed Fluoride Volatility Processes

Download or read book Engineering Development of Fluid bed Fluoride Volatility Processes written by D. Ramaswami and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a continuing program on the development of fluid-bed fluoride volatility processes, methods were developed for reprocessing highly-enriched uranium-aluminum alloy and uranium dioxide-stainless steel cermet fuels. These methods involve two basic gas-solid reaction steps: a separation step, in which the cladding, the bulk constituent of the fuel, is separated from the uranium, a minor constituent of the fuel; and a fluorination step, in which the uranium is recovered through the production of the volatile hexafluoride. The reactions are conducted in a fluid bed of high-fired alumina, which serves as a heat-transfer medium. Processing of these two types of fuels differs mainly in the initial separation step: Hydrogen chloride is used to remove the aluminum as the volatile chloride; the hydrogen fluoride-oxygen mixture is employed to destroy the stainless-steel matrix by producing an oxide mixture which remains with the alumina.

Book Engineering Development of Fluid bed Fluoride Volatility Processes

Download or read book Engineering Development of Fluid bed Fluoride Volatility Processes written by D. Ramaswami and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fluid-bed fluoride volatility process for the recovery of uranium from highly enriched uranium-Zircaloy-2 and uranium-aluminum alloy fuels has been develop. The conceptual process involves two basic chemical reaction steps conducted in a fluid-bed reactor. In the first step, the alloying material is separated as a volatile chloride by reaction with hydrogen chloride. In the second step, the uranium is recovered as its volatile hexafluoride by reaction with fluorine.

Book A Process for the Recovery of Uranium from Nuclear Fuel Elements Using Fluid bed Drying and Volatility Techniques

Download or read book A Process for the Recovery of Uranium from Nuclear Fuel Elements Using Fluid bed Drying and Volatility Techniques written by N. Levitz and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process scheme for the recovery of uranium from fuel elements has been developed. The scheme combines continuous fluid-bed drying and fluoride volatility techniques after initial dissolution of the fuel element in the appropriate aqueous system, hence the designation ADF, Aqueous Dry Fluorination Process. The application of this process to the recovery of uranium from highly enriched, low uranium-zirconium alloy plate-type fuels is described.
