Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Mary A. Maverick Samuel Augustus Maverick, my husband, was born July 23rd, 1803, at Pendleton, South Carolina. His parents were Samuel Maverick and his wife Elizabeth Anderson. She was the daughter of General Robert Anderson, of South Carolina, and of Revolutionary note, and his wife Ann Thompson of Virginia. Samuel Maverick was once a prominent merchant of Charleston, S.C., where he had raised himself from the almost abject poverty, to which the war of the Revolution had reduced his family, to a position of great affluence. It is said of him that he sent ventures to the Celestial Empire, and that he shipped the first bale of cotton from America to Europe. Some mer cantile miscarriage caused him subsequently to withdraw from, and close out, his business, and he retired to Pendle ton District* in the north west corner of South Carolina, at the foot of the mountains. Here he spent the balance of his days, and invested and speculated largely in lands in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

Book excerpt: One gaze across the ballroom changed my life forever.Lady Mary Ashburn intends to end her Season in London the same way she has ended her past four Seasons--as a single independent woman. If it weren't for her determination to help her friend make a match, she wouldn't be in London at all. Spending the rest of her days as a spinster sounds vastly more enjoyable than having her heart ripped out and humiliated like it was during her first Season. Risking that fate a second time is not worth opening her heart up to anyone. At least, that's how she feels before the mysterious earl, Lord Robert Hatley, arrives in London and fills her life with a romance like she's never known before. Torn between her growing feelings for Robert and her fear that his intentions might not be true, she must decide if she is willing to risk her heart again. Her choice only gets more difficult to make when her first love reappears with a changed heart and a determination to win her trust and affection again. Finally receiving love from the man she could never quite let go of could not have come at a worse time. Mary must choose between three different paths, each one at a cost that she fears will be too great.

Now they were Horrace and Ethel Cooper, grown up - quite respectable really - and living with their adopted parents, Jim and Rebecca Cooper. When Horrace saw the pretty girl who worked as a shop assistant in Adams (Ladies Fashion Modes) he was quite bowled over and knew he had to meet her. From then on he was in and out of the shop, buying hats and stockings and ribbons, trying desperately to persuade Miss Sally Brown to come out with him. And while he was laying siege to Sally, his sister Ethel was listening to her poet boyfriend spouting forth his romantic verse. But Ethel's involvement with the poet was to end more dangerously and dramatically than either she or Horrace had imagined and several quite startling events were to happen before Horrace and Ethel's affairs were resolved.

Book excerpt: "When Taos Pueblo, his first book, was published in 1930, Ansel Adams was just 28 ... Adams had only recently put aside a nascent career as a concert pianist to pursue photography full time, but he still wasn't sure he could make a go of it when he took up the Taos project in collaboration with Mary Austin, a popular novelist and nature writer based in Santa Fe. ... The twelve photos in Taos Pueblo--each an original print on silver bromide paper prepared especially for the book by Adam's San Francisco custom-paper supplier, William Dassonville--include several formal portraits reminiscent of Edward Curtis and nearly circumscribed, almost intimate landscapes that are a far cry from the inflated magnificence associated with Adam's later work. ... The book's solid success at the height of the Depression (all 108 copies sold over two years at $75 a piece) encouraged Adams to continue in his course as a photographer of the American landscape."--The Book of 101 Books : Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century / Edited by Andrew Roth. New York : PPP Editions in association with Ruth Horowitz, 2001.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary North America, figure skating ranks among the most 'feminine' of sports and few boys take it up for fear of being labelled effeminate or gay. Yet figure skating was once an exclusively male pastime - women did not skate in significant numbers until the late 1800s, at least a century after the founding of the first skating club. Only in the 1930s did figure skating begin to acquire its feminine image. Artistic Impressions is the first history to trace figure skating's striking transformation from gentlemen's art to 'girls' sport.' With a focus on masculinity, Mary Louise Adams examines how skating's evolving gender identity has been reflected on the ice and in the media, looking at rules, technique, and style and at ongoing debates about the place of 'art' in sport. Uncovering the little known history of skating, Artistic Impressions shows how ideas about sport, gender, and sexuality have combined to limit the forms of physical expression available to men.
