Book Adalbert Stifter s Late Prose

Download or read book Adalbert Stifter s Late Prose written by Helena Ragg-Kirkby and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a view of the late Stifter as a forerunner of twentieth-century modernism.Adalbert Stifter has always been viewed as a natural heir to the Great Classical tradition, even by those critics who detect disturbing subtexts in his fiction. But he should be viewed quite differently: however well disguised, heis in truth a closet modernist, and a major trailblazer for Kafka and the Absurd. This is most evident in his late fiction, which has been almost universally ignored, dismissed or disparaged by his critics. His last novel Witiko in particular has been conspicuously neglected by both nineteenth- and twentieth-century critics. Ragg-Kirkby demonstrates -- largely by way of close reading -- that this is Stifter's extreme masterpiece. Beneath the surface of Biedermeier stuffiness is a vision of fracture, emptiness, meaninglessness, and mania not only more radical than that of any other 19th-century author, but arguably more radical than that of any 20th-century author, precisely because there is such a disjuncture between text and sub-text. In his final novel, Stifter simply leaves the future behind. Helena Ragg-Kirkby is a lecturer in German at the University of Sheffield.uncture between text and sub-text. Book The Family in Adalbert Stifter s Moral and Aesthetic Universe

Download or read book The Family in Adalbert Stifter s Moral and Aesthetic Universe written by Karen Pawluk Danford and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1991 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the role of the family in European bourgeois society and literature in the 19th century through the works of Adalbert Stifter (1805-1868). The traditional patriarchal family was undergoing a crisis arising from the very principles of commercial society, while the emerging middle-classes idealized familiar piety as part of its liberal ideology. Socialist thinkers also attacked the family for its connection to private property and inherent tension with universal humanism. Stifter struggled with the negative and positive aspects of the family in his social essays and the "Studien" and "Bunte Steine" collections. In his greatest work, "Der Nachsommer," he asserts the importance of the family for individual happiness and social cohesion, but at some cost, since the enlightened, aestheticized world he presents there rests on a such rarefied vision of human nature.

Book Adalbert Stifter s Bunte Steine

Download or read book Adalbert Stifter s Bunte Steine written by Joseph Carroll Jeter and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bunte Steine, the 1853 collection of six novellas by the Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter, is widely known and acclaimed by readers of German literature. This study compares and contrasts the most narratively disparate of those stories to uncover the underlying stylistic and philosophical unities among them. The thematic commonality demonstrated here challenges the traditional view of the collection as primarily an editorial expedient and also suggests new consistencies with its equally famous, but critically troublesome, «Vorrede».

Book The Undiscover d Country

Download or read book The Undiscover d Country written by Markus Zisselsberger and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.G. Sebald (1944-2001) is the most prominent and perhaps the most enigmatic German-language writer of recent decades. His books have had a more profound impact outside the German-speaking world than those of any other. His innovative approach to writing brings to the fore concerns that are central to contemporary culture: the relationship between memory, history, and trauma; the experience of exile and our relation to place; and the role of literature (and photography) in the remembrance of the past. This collection of essays places travel at the center of Sebald's poetics and shows how his appropriation of travel in its myriad historical and cultural forms -- tourism, the pilgrimage, the walking vacation, travel as escape -- works to craft intertextual narratives in which the pursuit of individual life stories is mapped onto a wider European cultural history of loss and destruction. Following these cues, the contributors wander the various modalities of travel in Sebald's writing in order to discover how walking, flying, sojourning, and other kinds of peregrination inform the relationship between writing, reading, memory, and place in Sebald's work. At the same time, the essays uncover in innovative ways the affinities between Sebald and literary travelers like Bruce Chatwin, Franz Kafka, Adalbert Stifter, Christoph Ransmayr, and Joseph Conrad. Contributors: Christian Moser, J. J. Long, Carolin Duttlinger, Martin Klebes, Alan Itkin, James Martin, Brad Prager, Neil Christian Pages, Margaret Bruzelius, Barbara Hui, Dora Osborne, Peter Arnds. Markus Zisselsberger is Assistant Professor of German at the University of Miami, Florida.

Download or read book Germans from the East written by H.W. Schoenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who, in 1945 and 1946, could have foreseen that the economic and social integration of the millions of Germans from the East expelled into West Germany after Wodd War II would largely be accomplished in a few years? And, who could have foreseen that many years after this accomplishment the political repercussions of the expulsions would go on? Yet, surprisingly enough, this is what has happened. In 1969, as usual, the major issues of the federal election campaign in West Germany hardly reflect any specific economic and social concerns of the expellees, not even those bruited about by the NPD (N ationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands). At the same time, how ever, all the political parties vying in the campaign, with the exception of the newly founded, less influentialDKP (the new German Commu nist Party), pay considerable deference to the political interests of the expellees in the German question. Whether these interests represent the opinion of most of the expellees and whether the expellee associ ations in fact speak for many voters is another matter. Why are these questions rarely posed? Why, despite the economic and social integration of the expellees, do the East German Home land Provincial Societies - the Landsmannschaften - retain much influence? The explanation of this phenomenon becomes increasingly clear if one reads the intelligent and superbly documented analysis by Hans Schoenberg.
