Book excerpt: Written by Dixie West, Virginia Hatfield, Elizabeth Wilmerding, Christine Lefèvre and Lyn Gualtieri. From the Introduction: 'North Adak Island is a dichotomy of brute, natural beauty and a horrific example of what modern humans and war can do to a landscape. The island also contains what up until now has been largely untapped scientific data about the peoples who inhabited the island centuries prior to historic contact. The following scientific papers document the three-year effort to recover, analyse, and present that information to the Native American and scientific communities.'

Download or read book Through the Alaskan Darkness written by K.B. Penwarden and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BASED ON ACTUAL EVENTS Adak, a link in the Aleutian Chain of Alaska, snuggled right in between the notorious Bering Sea and the extreme northern most edge of the Pacific Ocean. It was a rare beautiful day in October. The cusp of winter for that part of Alaska. Five Chief Petty Officers stationed at Naval Station Adak take advantage of the good weather forecast for the weekend. It wouldn't take more than a few days to boat to the other side of the island, hunt caribou, then return to base. Plenty of time to win the race against that storm expected next week. They'd done it before. No reason they can't do it again. Except, this particular storm has no intention of keeping to man's schedule.

This book was released on 2016-03-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adak Naval Station, Adak, Alaska is located approximately 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage and 700 miles southeast of Siberia, near the center of the Aleutian island chain. The Station is strategically important for patrol and surveillance of Arctic waters. On Adak, all electric power generation and space heating is done with JP-5 jet fuel, amounting to nearly 9 million gallons per year. This dependence on oil, coupled with the remoteness of the island, makes any form of indigenous power source attractive if it is exploitable commercially. The purpose of this report is to present the data, results, and interpretations of numerous geoscientific investigations concerning indigenous geothermal potential at the Naval Station (NAVSTA), Adak.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of great tales of men against the sea, Adak offers a compelling look at courage and commitment in the face of certain tragedy. Alfa Foxtrot 586 was a P-3 Orion on station on a sensitive Cold War mission off the Kamchatka Peninsula on 26 October 1978. When a propeller malfunction turned into an engine fire, the pilot was forced to ditch his turboprop into the empty, mountainous seas west of the Aleutian Islands. The aircraft went down in just ninety seconds, taking one of the three rafts with it. Thirteen men launched the other rafts, the smallest of which—terribly overcrowded—soon began to leak, threatening the nine men aboard. This account of the flight crew's desperate battle against the sea, and the heroic efforts to rescue them provide an engrossing true story of survival.
