Book excerpt: The paintings of the American artist, Ad Reinhardt were from the start defined by their clear geometrical forms. Reinhardt, who before his training as a painter had received a degree in art history, rejected any kind of fusion between art and life or any mystification of painting. Around 1953 he did his first black paintings in which every tendency to colour seemed to fade. From 1960 his paintings were all only black, which he himself described as the 'last paintings that anyone can paint. 'The encounter between Ad Reinhardt and Josef Albers in 1952 - 1953 and their ensuing dialogues on the meaning of colour within the painting process were For The young Reinhardt an important impulse on his path towards his black paintings. Presented in this book is his oeuvre from the end of the 1930s To The late works; their special relevance can be recognised in juxtaposition with the works of Josef Albers.

Book Art as Art

Download or read book Art as Art written by Ad Reinhardt and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-06-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ad Reinhardt is probably best known for his black paintings, which aroused as much controversy as admiration in the American art world when they were first exhibited in the 1950s. Although his ideas about art and life were often at odds with those of his contemporaries, they prefigured the ascendance of minimalism. Reinhardt's interest in the Orient and in religion, his strong convictions about the value of abstraction, and his disgust with the commercialism of the art world are as fresh and valid today as they were when he first expressed them.

Book Black Paintings

Download or read book Black Paintings written by Stephanie Rosenthal and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Under the Hammer

Download or read book Under the Hammer written by James Simpson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of breaking images, we assume that it happens somewhere else. We also tend to think of iconoclasts as barbaric. Iconoclasts are people like the Taliban, who blew up Buddhist statues in 2001. We tend, that is, to look with horror on iconoclasm. This book argues instead that iconoclasm is a central strand of Anglo-American modernity. Our horror at the destruction of art derives in part from the fact that we too did, and still do, that. This is most obviously true of England's iconoclastic century between 1538 and 1643. That century of legislated early modern image breaking, exceptional in Europe for its jurisdictional extension and duration, stands at the core of this book. That's when written texts, especially poems, rather than visual images became our living monuments. Surely, though, the story of image breaking stops in the eighteenth century, with its enlightened cultivation of the visual arts and the art market. Not so, argues Under the Hammer: once started, iconoclasm is difficult to stop. It ripples through cultures, into the psyche, and it ripples through history. Museums may have protected images from the iconoclast's hammer, but also subject images to metaphorical iconoclasm. Aesthetics may have drawn a protective circle around the image, but as it did so, it also neutralised the image. The ripple effect also continues across the Atlantic, into puritan culture, into twentieth-century American Abstract Expressionism, and into the puritan temple of modern art. That, in fact, is where this book starts, with mid-twentieth-century abstract painting: the image has survived, just, but it bears the scars of a 500 year history.

Book Fine Art and Perceptual Neuroscience

Download or read book Fine Art and Perceptual Neuroscience written by Paul Hackett and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the integration of psychology and fine art has sparked growing academic interest among researchers of these disciplines. The author, both a psychologist and artist, offers up a unique merger and perspective of these fields. Through the production of fine art, which is directly informed by neuroscientific and optical processes, this volume aims to fill a gap in the literature and understanding of the creation and perception of the grid image created as a work of art. The grid image is employed (for reasons discussed in the text) to illustrate more general processes associated with the integration of vision, visual distortion, and painting. Existing at the intersection of perceptual neuroscience, psychology, fine art and art history, this volume concerns the act of painting and the process of looking. More specifically, the book examines vision and the effects of visual impairment and how these can be interpreted through painting within a theoretical framework of visual neuroscience.

Book Procession

  • Author : David Acton
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2015-11-13
  • ISBN : 0520288009
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Procession written by David Acton and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated catalogue accompanies the first major museum retrospective of the painter Norman Lewis (1909Ð1979). Lewis was the sole African American artist of his generation who became committed to issues of abstraction at the start of his career and continued to explore them over its entire trajectory. His art derived inspiration from music (jazz and classical) and nature (seasonal change, plant forms, the sea). Also central to his work were the dramatic confrontations of the civil rights movement, in which he was an active participant among the New York art scene. Bridging the Harlem Renaissance, Abstract Expressionism, and beyond, Lewis is a crucial figure in American abstraction whose reinsertion into the discourse further opens the field for recognition of the contributions of artists of color. Bringing much-needed attention to LewisÕs output and significance in the history of American art, Procession is a milestone in Lewis scholarship and a vital resource for future study of the artist and abstraction in his period.
