Book Adelaide and Theodore Or Letters on Education 1783

Download or read book Adelaide and Theodore Or Letters on Education 1783 written by Stéphanie Félicité comtesse de Genlis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1783, this translation was hugely popular in late eighteenth-century Britain. It was read as a system of education by authors such as Catherine Macaulay, Mary Wollstonecraft, Maria Edgeworth and Clara Reeve, and is mentioned at the end of Jane Austen's Emma. Some of the theories Genlis adopts in the education of the eponymous children have their roots in Rousseau's Emile. However, Genlis herself suggested that Rousseau knew little of the practical education of children, and she endeavors to rectify this in her own novel, focusing particularly on the education of the female child, Adelaide. This important and influential work can therefore be placed within the context of the late eighteenth-century debate on female education.

Book Sta l Romanticism and Revolution

Download or read book Sta l Romanticism and Revolution written by John Claiborne Isbell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two centuries of sexism have hidden Staël's place in international history. Straddling the divides of the French Revolution, Napoleonic Europe, emergent nationalism, and European Romanticism, and playing pivotal roles in those movements, she was also a friend of Byron, Jefferson, and Tsar Alexander. Extensive archival research, and a complete contextual overview of Staël's writings, here restore Staël's canonical status as political philosopher, historian, European Romantic theorist, and Revolutionary. While the term stateswoman is not commonly used, it describes Staël aptly, acting as she necessarily did through men around her. The brilliant game of masks and proxies imposed on her by patriarchy is detailed here, alongside her unending fight for the oppressed, from the nations of Napoleon's subjugated Europe to the victims of the Atlantic slave trade. Book Land and Privilege in Byzantium

Download or read book Land and Privilege in Byzantium written by Mark C. Bartusis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pronoia was a type of conditional grant from the emperor, often to soldiers, of various properties and privileges. In large measure the institution of pronoia characterized social and economic relations in later Byzantium, and its study is the study of later Byzantium. Filling the need for a comprehensive study of the institution, this book examines the origin, evolution and characteristics of pronoia, focusing particularly on the later thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. But the book is much more than a study of a single institution. With a broad chronological scope extending from the mid-tenth to the mid-fifteenth century, it incorporates the latest understanding of Byzantine agrarian relations, taxation, administration and the economy, as it deals with relations between the emperor, monastic and lay landholders, including soldiers and peasants. Particular attention is paid to the relation between the pronoia and Western European, Slavic and Middle Eastern institutions, especially the Ottoman timar.

Book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present

Download or read book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present written by Carol Poster and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once nearly as ubiquitous as dictionaries and cookbooks are today, letter-writing manuals and their predecessors served to instruct individuals not only on the art of letter composition but also, in effect, on personal conduct. Poster and Mitchell contend that the study of letter-writing theory, which bridges rhetorical theory and grammatical studies, represents an emerging discipline in need of definition. In this volume, they gather the contributions of eleven experts to sketch the contours of epistolary theory and collect the historic and bibliographic materials - from Isocrates to email - that form the basis for its study.

Book excerpt: Cultures of learning and practices of education in the Middle Ages are drawing renewed attention, and recent approaches are questioning the traditional boundaries of institutional and intellectual history. This book assembles contributions on both Byzantine and Latin learned culture, and locates medieval scholars in their religious and political contexts, instead of studying them in a framework of 'schools.' The contributions offer complementary perspectives on scholars and their work, discussing the symbolic and discursive construction of religious and intellectual authority, practices of networking, and adaptations of knowledge formations. Book Amalia Holst On the Vocation of Woman to Higher Intellectual Education

Download or read book Amalia Holst On the Vocation of Woman to Higher Intellectual Education written by Andrew Cooper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition offers the first English translation of Amalia Holst's daring book, On the Vocation of Woman to Higher Intellectual Education (1802). In one of the first works of German philosophy published under a woman's name, Holst presents a manifesto for women's education that centres on a basic provocation: as far as the mind is concerned, women are equal partakers in the project of Enlightenment and should thus have unfettered access to the sciences in general and to philosophy in particular. Holst's manifesto resonates with the work of several women writers across Europe, including Olympe de Gouges, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Germaine de Sta?l. Yet in contrast to the early works of feminism we celebrate today, her book had little success. Its reception confronts us with a darker side of the German Enlightenment that, until recently, has been neglected. Holst sought to unearth the gendered nature of the fundamental concepts of the Enlightenment--including vocation, education, and culture--which enabled men to establish the subordinate status of women by philosophical means. However, her argument was scorned by male reviewers, who denied the very possibility of a woman philosopher. With an introduction by Andrew Cooper, and translations of biographical material and early reviews, this edition provides students and scholars of German philosophy with a timely resource for developing a richer understanding of their field, and general readers with a powerful early feminist text that reveals the opportunities and difficulties facing women philosophers at the turn of the nineteenth century.
