Book excerpt: Caffeine consumption prior to resistance exercise has demonstrated significant increases in maximal strength in resistance-trained individuals, along with concomitant increases in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of caffeine (4mg/kg) alone or in conjunction with acute resistance exercise in resistance-trained women on resistance exercise performance and cardiovascular hemodynamics. The acute bout of resistance exercise consisted of two sets of 10 repetitions at 75% 1 repetition maximum (1RM) for the squat and bench press, and one set to failure at 70% 1RM for both resistance exercises. Performance variables included the total load lifted, as well as the number of repetitions completed. Hemodynamic variables included HR, systolic and diastolic BP, mean arterial pressure, and pulse pressure. Measurements were taken at rest (Rest1), 45 minutes after consumption of the caffeine or placebo (Rest2), immediately post exercise (Rec1), and 10-minutes post exercise (Rec2). Paired samples t-tests were used to evaluate differences in total load, and the total number of repetitions performed during set 3. A 2 x 4 repeated measures ANOVA was used to assess the effects of condition (caffeine vs placebo) across the time (Rest1, Rest2, Rec1, Rec2) with a Bonferroni correction. Eight resistance-trained women (mean±SD: 23±3 yrs) completed the study. There were no significant differences between conditions for any performance variable. However, there was a significant (p=0.001) main effect of time for HR, such that it was elevated at Rec1 and Rec2, compared to Rest1 and Rest2. There were no significant interactions of main effects for systolic or diastolic BP. There was a significant interaction (p=0.04) for mean arterial pressure such that following caffeine consumption it was elevated at Rest2 compared to Rest1, and was different than Rest2 following the placebo. There was also no interaction or main effects of pulse pressure. Collectively, these data demonstrate that caffeine ingestion prior to resistance exercise significantly augments mean arterial pressure at rest, and has no effects on resistance exercise performance or other cardiovascular hemodynamics in resistance-trained women.

Book excerpt: Caffeine is one of the most widely used drugs in the world, commonly ingested in coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, and energy drinks, due to its benefits of increasing mental and physical capabilities. Caffeine has also been commonly used as an ergogenic aid when performing repeated-sprint activity. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 200 mg of caffeine during repeated-sprint activity on heart rate, rating of perceived exertion, blood lactate concentration, and sprint time. METHODS: Thirty-two students (Age: 22.19 ± 2.29 years; Height: 170.58 ± 10.18 cm; Weight: 74.78 ± 12.76 kg; BMI: 25.59 ± 2.78) participated in the study. The study followed a randomized crossover trial, in which each participant ingested either 200 mg of caffeine (CAF) or placebo (PLA) 45 minutes prior to each of the two exercise sessions. The sprinting protocol consisted of three sets of six maximal-effort 30-meter sprints. Each single sprint covered a 15-meter distance between the starting line and the secondary marker, such that each subject sprinted down to the secondary marker and back to the starting line. Each of the six sprints in a set were separated by a total of 20 seconds using an active recovery modality. Following each sprint set, heart rate, blood lactate concentration, sprint time, and the rating of perceived exertion were recorded. RESULTS: The caffeine trials were not significantly different than the placebo trials for heart rate and the rating of perceived exertion. Book excerpt: Abstract This study investigated the effects of coffee ingestion (COF) on serum testosterone responses to exercise in recreationally weight-trained males. Subjects ingested either 12 ounces of 6mg/kg caffeinated coffee (COF), decaffeinated coffee (DEC), or water (PLA) one hour prior to exercise in a randomized, within-subject, crossover design. The exercise session consisted of 21 minutes of high intensity interval cycling (alternating intensities corresponding to two minutes at power outputs associated with 2.0 mmol/L lactate and 4.0 mmol/L lactate) followed by resistance exercise (7 exercises, 3 sets of 10 repetitions, 65% 1RM, 1-minute rest periods). Subjects also completed repetitions to fatigue tests and soreness scales to determine muscle recovery 24 hours following the exercise. T was elevated immediately and 30-minutes post-exercise by 20.5% and 14.3% respectively (p0.05). No relationships were observed between T and any proxy of recovery, suggesting that adopting high testosterone strategies may not always improve quality of subsequent exercise bouts. The duration of T elevation indicates that this protocol is beneficial to creating a long-lasting anabolic environment. While past literature suggests caffeine may enhance T post-exercise, data from the current study suggest that augmented T response is not evident following caffeine supplementation via coffee.

Book excerpt: Physiological responses after maximal and submaximal exercise are routinely monitored in a plethora of diseases (e.g. cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, asthma, neuromuscular disorders), and normal populations (e.g. athletes, youth, elderly), while slower or irregular post-exercise recovery usually indicates poor health and/or low fitness level. Abnormal post-exercise recovery (as assessed via blunted post-exercise heart rate dynamics) helps to predict the presence and severity of coronary artery disease, while differences in recovery outcomes in athletes might discriminate between fit and unfit individuals. Disturbances in post-exercise recovery might be due to acute or persistent changes in: (1) adaptive responses mediated by the autonomic nervous system and vasodilator substances, (2) cellular bioenergetics, and/or (3) muscular plasticity. Preliminary evidence suggests possible role of time-dependent modulation of nitric oxide synthase and adenosine receptors during post-exercise recovery, yet no molecular attributes of post-exercise recovery are revealed so far. Currently several markers of post-exercise recovery are used (e.g. heart rate measures, hormone profiles, biochemical and hematological indices); however none of them meets all criteria to make its use generally accepted as the gold standard. In addition, recent studies suggest that different pharmacological agents and dietary interventions, or manipulative actions (e.g. massage, cold-water immersion, compression garments, athletic training) administered before, during or immediately after exercise could positively affect post-exercise recovery. There is a growing interest to provide more evidence-based data concerning the effectiveness and safety of traditional and novel interventions to affect post-exercise recovery. The goals of this research topic are to critically evaluate the current advances on mechanisms and clinical implications of post-exercise recovery, and to summarize recent experimental data from interventional studies. This knowledge may help to identify the hierarchy of key mechanisms, and recognize methods to monitor and improve post-exercise recovery in both health and disease.

The impact of caffeine consumption on various aspects of health, including cardiovascular disease, reproduction, bone mineral density, and fluid homeostasis are reviewed. The behavioral effects of caffeine are also discussed, including the effect of caffeine on reaction to stress, withdrawal effects, and detrimental effects of high intakes. The amounts of caffeine found to enhance vigilance and reaction time consistently are reviewed and recommendations are made with respect to amounts of caffeine appropriate for maintaining alertness of military personnel during field operations.
