One of the studies required consisted of acute and chronic toxicity tests on Daphnia magna, the organism chosen because it is sensitive to toxic substances.

Four species of fish (fathead minnow, rainbow trout, channel catfish, and bluegill), one aquatic invertebrate (Daphnia magna), and one alga (Selenastrum capricornutum) were tested. Emphasis was on determining the threshold levels of toxicity to the species found to be most sensitive to the test materials.
