Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are very pleased that it has become necessary after such a short time to publish a new edition of this handy guide to acupuncture, which is intended to combine practicality with an affordable price. It, just like the first edition, is based on our larger Acupunclure Textbook and Atlas, but we have taken this opportunity to revise and update the text. For example, several scientific advances have been included in Chapter 2 (e. g. , findings of recent studies on drug addiction, antiemetic effects, and urogenital efficacy). In response to numerous requests we have added a detailed account of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Chapter 8. Although most practitioners in the West have been using "scien tific" acupuncture (e. g. , stimulating peripheral nerves to release endorphins), a growing number are now trying TCM approaches. The mechanism of action of TCM is unknown: the method is based on empirical phenomenology and pattern recognition rather than cause-and-effect logic. Nevertheless, double-blind, controlled scien tific trials are required to determine whether TCM is more effective than "scientific" acupuncture. Scientific assessment of TCM in con trolled clinical trials is possible even in the absence of a scientific explanation of its mechanism of action, i. e. , even if we do not know how it works. Many successful Western medical procedures are empirical; for instance, gaseous anesthetics are used widely al though we do not understand how they work.

Book excerpt: Single Point Acupuncture and Moxibustion for 100 Diseases is a comprehensive yet easy-to-follow guide to the clinical application of single point acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, with a special emphasis on methods and needle techniques. It is a simple technique for practitioners to master, and patients are quick to extol the virtues of the single-point approach. Author Dr. Decheng Chen describes in detail how to treat one hundred of the most common clinical ailments, including headaches, neck pain, hypertension, and even the common cold. Dr. Chen uses both Western and traditional Chinese medical theory to describe his treatment methods. Each section consists of an introduction to the disease, a detailed explanation of the needle technique used, a case study of the treatment, and a discussion. • Author : Houchi Dung
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2013-10-24
  • ISBN : 1466581921
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Acupuncture written by Houchi Dung and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practiced for more than 2,000 years, acupuncture was once restricted to the realm of alternative medicine. It was thought to be based on mythical elements and not easily understood by those in the scientific community. Acupuncture: An Anatomical Approach, Second Edition dispels these notions and brings this once backroom therapy into the forefront—explaining it in terms that can be easily comprehended by all medical professionals. Presenting a scientific, anatomical approach to acupuncture, this volume discusses: The basics of the nervous system Acupuncture points located in the head and face, formed by the cranial nerves The cervical plexus, which forms acupuncture points in the neck region Acupuncture points formed by the brachial plexus in the upper limbs, spinal nerves in the body trunk, and the lumbar–sacral plexuses in the lower limbs The anesthesia effect of biochemical substances in the nervous system The measurement and quantification of pain Applications of acupuncture in clinical practice, from cases easy to treat to those more challenging Theories on the future of acupuncture The treatment of pain, in general, is controversial, as many therapies have unintended consequences and side effects. Acupuncture provides a therapy that is quick, easy to perform, and requires no medications. This volume enables physicians, osteopaths, pain specialists, chiropractors, and other health professionals to perform this effective treatment for their patients who experience both chronic and acute pain.
