Book excerpt: What is Chinese medicine? What are qi, yin-yang, or acupuncture meridians and points? Is acupuncture effective? If you think you already know the answers to these questions; chances are you're wrong. The practice of acupuncture began in China in the Second Century BCE (200BCE-101BCE). Its theoretical framework and purported actions are based solely in the existence of the ubiquitous entity called qi (chi); however, is this qi real? Are these purported actions proven? If you look around, you'll notice hundreds of books that assure you, yes, it is all real! From relieving pain to treating infertility, from cancer to diarrhea; these sources claim that acupuncture will restore balance to your mind, body, and soul, for it is believed to truly be a Chinese-made panacea. However, Discovering Acupuncture is different. This book explains acupuncture from beginning to end and offers independent research aimed to provide impartial advice to patients, students, as well as anyone else who seeks to learn the truth about this ancient form of Chinese medicine. If you, or someone you know, have decided to explore acupuncture therapy, this book will help you understand not just some, but all the mysteries of acupuncture. By taking in the findings presented in Discovering Acupuncture, you will be able to learn the unbiased truth, the only truth and you'll see that, as is usually the case, the truth is... well, not so simple!

Book Acupuncture as Revolution Suffering Liberation and Love

Download or read book Acupuncture as Revolution Suffering Liberation and Love written by Rachel Pagones and published by Brevis Press Limited. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many in the global West have heard something about acupuncture as a treatment for pain relief; they may even have learned of its use in treating opioid addiction. But few know that, in the early 1970s, acupuncture was employed as a means of social and political revolution by Black, Latinx, and radical left-wing activists, inspired by the barefoot doctors of Mao Zedong's Communist revolution. Led by Mutulu Shakur, a charismatic member of the Republic of New Afrika, these young and idealistic people learned to apply acupuncture in the gritty confines of Lincoln Hospital, in the South Bronx of New York. The derelict public hospital, long known as "the Butcher Shop," became an unlikely source of energy and hope as the activists successfully helped people from the community recover from heroin addiction. The acupuncturists - some of them recovering from heroin addiction themselves - employed a combination of needling points in the ear with counseling and "political education"; for instance, taking clients to witness the trials of political prisoners (people imprisoned for their political beliefs or activities). By the late 1970s, the activists' radical approach led to their forced removal from Lincoln. But Shakur and others formed the Black Acupuncture Advisory Association of North America (BAAANA) and founded a college to train a new generation of acupuncturists in the fine art of traditional Chinese medicine. The fundamental principal was healthcare as a human right. The goal was liberation of people oppressed by racism. The college had a short life; it was closed after an FBI raid in connection with the lethal armed robbery of a Brink's truck. Yet over three decades, the spirit of revolutionary acupuncture did not die, and neither did the issues that forced its rise, including drug addiction, racism, and social and health care inequities. Inspired by the radical acupuncturists of the 1970s, another group - the People's Organization of Community Acupuncture - founded the community acupuncture movement and took up the mantle of revolution. They, too, proclaim health care as a human right for people marginalized by society - and seek to give back that right through the art of inserting fine needles. Acupuncture as Revolution highlights a little-known intersection of acupuncture, leftist movements of the 1970s, and the global influence on healthcare of Mao's Communist revolution - and shows how the legacy of that explosive meeting lives on today.

Book A Practical Guide to Acu points

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Acu points written by Chris Jarmey and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of acu-points is vital not only for acupuncturists but also for bodyworkers. This user-friendly manual contains current, comprehensive information for both groups, with special emphasis on how shiatsu and tuina therapists can best utilize point knowledge in their practice. Renowned experts Chris Jarmey and Ilaira Bouratinos use succinct text, a well-organized framework, and detailed color anatomical illustrations to clarify the complexities of acu-points. In keeping with normal practice, the authors give the precise anatomical location of a point and illustrate it with a dot, along with alternative locations where relevant. However, the book goes further by delineating the larger area where the point can be activated by pressure, gua sha, and other means. In addition, it explains the optimum physical position for treatment via acupuncture, acupressure, and other strategies, as treatment positions can vary according to the method of point stimulation. The book also documents the distribution of sensation resulting from point stimulation, and differentiates between pressure and needle application where appropriate. A Practical Guide to Acu-Points presents a wealth of carefully researched information equally valuable for professionals, students, and conscientious practitioners.
