D., 1873, for the Purpose of Organizaion The Committee appointed to prepare suitable action in regard to the formation of a new Synod, composed of the Classes of Ziou, Maryland, Virginia, Mercersburg, and North Carolina, beg leave to report: 1. That all the preliminary, Constitutional and Synodical requirements in the case have been complied with. 2. That the Classes of Zion, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Mercersburg, are hereby constituted a Synod, to be known as the - Synod of the Reformed Church in the United States. 3. That the ministers and delegated elders of said Classes, shall meet in convention, in the city of Frederick, Md., on the - day of-, 1873, to organize said Synod, to determine its name, and transact such other business may properly claim its attention. 4. That the opening sermon on the occasion shall le preached by the Rev. Daniel Zacharias, D. D., of Frederick, who shall also preside at the organization of the Synod. 5. That the time for the organization of the Synod shall be determined by a Committee, consisting of the Rev. Dr. Daniel Zacharias and the Presidents of the several Classes above named, by whom due notice of the time agreed upon shall be given." And pursuant to the following notice, published in the Reformed Church Messenger of February 19th, 1873, and subsequent issues: "Meeting For Organization. The undersigned hereby notifies the members of the Classes of Zion, Mercersburg, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina, that a meeting will be held in Frederick City, Md., on the first Friday after Easter (April 18th), at 71/2 o'clock, P.M., for the purpose of organizing a Synod, under the authority granted for that end by the late General Synod of the Reformed Church in the United States. The punctual attendance of the ministers of the Classes named, and of the delegated elders from each charge, is requested. Daniel Zacharias. Frederick, Md., Feb. 13th, 1873." In consequence of the removal by death from the Church militant of the Rev. Daniel Zacharias, D. D., March 31st, A. D. 1873, who had been thus designated by the General Synod, to preach the opening sermon and preside at the organization of District Synod, the opening sermon was preached by the Rev. J.O. Miller, D. D., of York, Pa., he having been requested to do so by the late Dr. Zacharias, a few weeks previous to his death. The sermon was preached from 1 Cor. 3:11: "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." The Convention was thereupon called to order by the Rev. J. O. Miller.
