Book Famous Actresses of the Day in America

Download or read book Famous Actresses of the Day in America written by Lewis Clinton Strang and published by . This book was released on 1899 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is obviously impossible, in writing of persons so prominently before the public as the women considered in this book, to secure any great amount of new matter regarding the chief incidents of their lives, and the author wishes frankly to acknowledge himself a compiler and editor in so far as biographical details are concerned. The facts were gathered from various contemporaneous publications, and in some instances, from the actresses themselves. Accuracy has been the aim, but sometimes it has appeared, after a careful sifting of ambiguous and contradictory statements, that a well-considered guess was the only apparent solution of the problem. In so far as criticism is concerned the opinions expressed, except where credit is given, are the author's own, and he has endeavored to be just with kindness, and still to preserve a proper sense of proportion. In preparing the list of the actresses it was necessary to exclude from it many worthy of notice. A numerical limit had to be fixed, and in the process of selection the preference was given to those whose work during the last season was especially notable. The arrangement of the book is purely mechanical, and comparisons, which are usually foolish, and always valueless, are purposely avoided. - Preface.

The criticisms and estimates of the different players' abilities, except in cases where credit is given, are the author's own. The biographical facts, interviews, and anecdotes were obtained from various sources. They have in all cases been carefully verified, and the imaginings of the press agent have been scrupulously ruled out. In selecting the list of persons to be considered in the work, those actors most prominent on the American stage today were given the preference, and consequently it was found necessary to omit a number whose past achievements give them high rank in their profession. - v. 1 Preface.

Book The American Stage of To Day

Download or read book The American Stage of To Day written by William Winter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Stage of to-Day: Biographies and Photographs of One Hundred Leading Actors and Actresses Theatre, and which it was thought would. Protect him from extortion. Notwithstanding Booth's lack of business sagacity, his confiding disposition, his indifference to material gain, and his propensity to drift and dream, he earned three successive fortune-s, and, dying at the age of sixty, left an estate of more than half a million. His pecuniary success was great, but his greater success was that of mind and soul. He was a great man, and his memory will be honored always in the annals of our stage. Booth's Theatre, after he left it, passed through the custody of various speculative managers, and ultimately it was abandoned: but in his hands it never was a fail ure, and in endeavors that are now current the spirit of it seems to live again and to breathe a monition to the People to guard and promote the sacred cause of which he made it the emblem: for it is with the People, in their love and enjoyment of acting and in their allegiance to the Actor and his Art, that the Present of the Theatre rests, and it is to the People that its Future is committed. Book African American Actresses

Download or read book African American Actresses written by Charlene B. Regester and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine actresses, from Madame Sul-Te-Wan in Birth of a Nation (1915) to Ethel Waters in Member of the Wedding (1952), are profiled in African American Actresses. Charlene Regester poses questions about prevailing racial politics, on-screen and off-screen identities, and black stardom and white stardom. She reveals how these women fought for their roles as well as what they compromised (or didn't compromise). Regester repositions these actresses to highlight their contributions to cinema in the first half of the 20th century, taking an informed theoretical, historical, and critical approach.
