Book Pronunciation Fun for ESL Students

Download or read book Pronunciation Fun for ESL Students written by Christine Mandell and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pronunciation Fun for ESL Students, a pronunciation exercise book with online, downloadable audio component, (available for free at http://christinemandell.com), is intended for ESL students who are looking for an amusing and effective way to improve their American accent. The book has two sections: The first section, "Stories," consists of stories, mini-stories, and sentences that give you practice pronouncing a particular sound. Each of the sounds in American English is covered in the "Stories" section. For example, my stories "Woody, Wendy, and the Wishy-Washy Waiter," and "Whiz Quiz" will give you lots of practice with words containing the sound /W/. And my stories "Rhonda and the Rhubarb" and "Rita, Richard, and the Roaches" will give you lots of practice with words containing the sound /R/. The second section consists of "auditory discrimination" (also known as "minimal pairs") exercises, which help the student distinguish between two particular sounds. For example, the word pair "rice/lice" contains two words that differ by one sound. Practicing the "Auditory Discrimination between /R/ and /L/" exercise will help ensure that when you visit America, you will never make the mistake of going to a restaurant and ordering steamed lice! Although this book can be used by students independently, you will get the most out of it if you have a qualified ESL tutor give you a pronunciation test, initially. This will help you identify which specific sounds you should work on, so it will save you from having to slog through the whole book. Please Note: Because of the sometimes mature content of the stories in this book, some of the stories are not intended for young children to read; they are more appropriate for high school students and adults. However, some of the stories are suitable for young children, among them "Patches and Her Twitching Heart," "Marge and the Genies," "The Big Spider Fight," "The Knitting Knight and the Gnomes," "The King's Boomerang," "Floyd's Toys," "Mabel the Tattletale," "Rhonda and the Rhubarb," "Princess Nancy's Dancing Curse," "Tess and the Trombone Octet," and "Whiz Quiz." I hope you will have as much fun while using this book as I had while writing it! Best wishes, Christine (Chris) Mandell christinemandell.com
