Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the methodology and results of a three-year, eleven-country science-to-policy research project – Toward a Policy Model of Multifunctional Agriculture and Rural Development – undertaken between 2005 and 2008 and financed under the European Union's Sixth Framework program. It deals with an important contemporary policy issue: how best to ensure that an agriculturally-based policy can contribute to the development of rural regions. It tackles this problem in a number of different but complementary ways, primarily by the development of a unique and innovative dynamic systems model, POMMARD (a Policy Model of Multifunctional Agriculture and Rural Development).

Book Policies and institutions shaping the business enabling environment of agrifood processors in Senegal

Download or read book Policies and institutions shaping the business enabling environment of agrifood processors in Senegal written by Ilie, E.T., Kelly, S. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and medium agrifood enterprises (SMAEs) such as processors, transporters and other service providers, play an important role in achieving sustainable development objectives. For instance, they connect farmers to urban markets; make significant investments in rural areas; provide employment to vulnerable populations such as women and youth; and propel the modernization of agrifood value chains. In sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture comprises 53 percent of total employment and 15.5 percent of gross domestic product, supporting SMAEs can have great implications for pro-poor growth and rural transformation. To support SMAEs in fulfilling their potential, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been dedicating research to better understand their policy and technical needs. This publication is such output and aims to provide an assessment of the policy and institutional framework in Senegal shaping the business models of small and medium agrifood processors. This systemic appraisal of Senegal’s business enabling environment for SMAEs was cross-fertilized with an analysis of the business models of three rice millers, resulting in a related FAO technical study 'The role of small and medium agrifood enterprises in food systems transformation: the case of rice processors in Senegal'. The analyses were carried out using a multidisciplinary agrifood systems approach, which looks at policies and institutions related to procurement, operations, logistics, finance, marketing and sales, human resources, and strategic partnerships. Due to its well-articulated policy documents and the extensive research on various aspects of the business enabling environment conducted in the country, Senegal represents a compelling case to illustrate the links between policies and the activities of agrifood processors.

Book Peace Security and Post conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa

Download or read book Peace Security and Post conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa written by Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes region of Africa is characterized by protest politics, partial democratization, political illegitimacy and unstable economic growth. Many of the countries that are members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which are: Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia, have experienced political violence and bloodshed at one time or another. While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of savage capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.

Book Territorial Indicators of Employment

Download or read book Territorial Indicators of Employment written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by OECD. This book was released on 1996 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, compiled with the assistance of Statistics Canada, shows that agriculture is no longer the dominant sector providing employment for rural populations in OECD countries. Today, in all member nations, the vast majority of rural employment opportunities are in non-agricultural activities. Even in the predominantly rural regions, less than a quarter of the total employment is in agriculture, forestry and fisheries. At least every second job is in the service sector, and in some countries, the proportion is even higher. Employment growth in the predominantly rural regions has been primarily, if not exclusively, due to substantial increases in service sector employment. Between 1980 and 1990, employment in this sector grew 15% to 25% in those regions. In most countries, this was often better than the national average in developing new employment opportunities. In many countries, such as Canada and Norway, a significant number of rural regions did better than the national average in developing new employment opportunities. So, being rural is not a handicap to job creation. On the contrary, some rural regions are the most innovative and dynamic elements of a country.

Book Vocational Training Needs in Rural Communities

Download or read book Vocational Training Needs in Rural Communities written by Centre européen pour la promotion et la formation en milieu agricole et rural and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliographical research study surveys recent literature on specific vocational training needs prevailing in rural communities and the most effective means of satisfying those needs. It also charts out a general overview of the vocational training situation in rural areas in the Member States of the European Community and in Spain and Portugal. Part One identifies the major objectives of training--those which derive from the component parts of the rural milieu and those which derive from the activities peculiar to rural life. Within the full range of the needs identified, the major part of all publications on rural vocational training attach priority to training for farming personnel. Part Two examines the development of this type of training. It addresses training supply and demand, objectives and methods of training in agriculture, and special target groups for training in rural areas: women, and individuals with a nonagricultural background. Part Two also looks at the question of the training inputs made in connection with local rural development projects that are expected to supplement the sectoral training by dealing with the social dimensions of life in a rural community and to cover the needs experienced by people engaged in other occupational fields. Part Three offers conclusions. A five-page bibliography is included. (YLB)
