The main objective of this approach is to meet a difficult comprise: maximum convergence speed with maximum accuracy. Each application requires a certain approach which determines the filter structure, the cost function to minimize the estimation error, the adaptive algorithm, and other parameters; and each selection involves certain cost in computational terms, that in any case should consume less time than the time required by the application working in real-time. Theory and application are not, therefore, isolated entities but an imbricated whole that requires a holistic vision. This book collects some theoretical approaches and practical applications in different areas that support expanding of adaptive systems.

Often in order to compensate for the noise in acoustic environments a passive approach is taken, in which sound absorption and isolation techniques are implemented throughout the physical space. Although this passive approach can provide suitable levels of noise reduction for a reasonable range of frequencies, several active noise control approaches are proven to be more effective, especially at frequencies below 500 Hz. Active Noise Control utilizes adaptive filtering algorithms to achieve significant noise attenuation of lower frequency noise that significantly degrades the desired audio signal. The level of effectiveness of various adaptive filtering algorithms can determine the overall noise attenuation and the rate at which the system attenuates the noise in the given space. Noise source location, level, and resonant space may dictate the amount of degradation caused on the input signal. Some acoustic spaces in which Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) headsets are used causes increasing resonance and inconsistent changes in noise power and amplitude. Special consideration of these signal characteristics are used to determine the stationary level of the noise signal, which is an ideal measure for determination of an adaptive filtering algorithm. Most Active Noise Control systems currently utilize only versions of the Least Mean Square adaptive filtering algorithm. This research will focus on a selective algorithm that will utilize descriptors to identify differences in the noise signal, and determine an optimal algorithm to be used for the filtering of distinct portions of the signal that are identified. The Recursive Least Squares adaptive algorithm will be used as the primary means of filtering due to its fast rate of convergence and tracking performance. A selective switching mechanism will be used to insure the Least Mean Squares algorithm is initiated only when signal conditions dictate effective noise control can be performed using this algorithm. Several different noise source environments are tested in order to attain the best active noise control solution to be used.

These approaches include the standard Least Mean Square adaptive noise cancellation algorithm, an optimum fixed weight filter, a special type of notch filter and frequency domain adaptive noise cancellation. The filters have been implemented both off-line using FORTRAN programs on an LSI-11/2 microcomputer, and in real time using thee Texas Instruments TMS 320 microprocessor and in PDP-11 assembly language using an LSI-11/2. Frequency domain adaptive filtering was seen to be superior to the LMS time domain algorithm because its much greater computational efficiency allowed the analysis of much longer filters. A digital filter that exploits the engine noise by having a notch at each harmonic was seen to be more effective than any of the adaptive filters. The digital filter equations are derived, starting with a particular periodic reference input. This adaptive filter is shown to be, in reality, an infinite impulse response, time invariant filter. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is a method used to reduce undesired noise. This thesis details the programming of digital signal processing (DSP) techniques used to filter out unwanted sound. The purpose of the explanation and simulation of the Filtered-X LMS FIR adaptive filter in MATLAB is to demonstrate active noise cancellation in software. This background research of algorithms and code development will be used for the eventual integration with a DSP processor or microcontroller that allows for the augmentation of a standard pair of Sennheiser PX100-II headphones, that do not provide noise isolation or cancellation, into headphones that can cancel unwanted noise. The headphones will then be used with an Amateur Ham Radio in an environment with unwanted, high decibel sound. This thesis supports the proof of concept through software simulation and a report of different methods of hardware integration. The research and development of digital signal processing techniques and hardware integration will lead to the augmentation of a pair of headphones used for communication in a noisy environment.
