Book Vortex Generator Jet Flow Control in Highly Loaded Compressors

Download or read book Vortex Generator Jet Flow Control in Highly Loaded Compressors written by João Carvalho Baiense (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A flow control method for minimizing losses in a highly loaded compressor blade was analyzed. Passive and active flow control experiments with vortex generator jets were conducted on a seven blade linear compressor cascade to demonstrate the potential application of passive flow control on a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control vortex generator jets use the pressure distribution generated by air flow over the blade profile to drive jets from the pressure side to the suction side. Active flow control was analyzed by pressuring the blade plenum with an auxiliary compressor unit. Active flow control decreased profile losses by approximately 37% while passive flow control had negligible impact on the profile loss of a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control was able to achieve a jet velocity ratio, jet velocity to upstream velocity, of 0.525. The success of active flow control with a velocity ratio of 0.9 suggests there is potential for passive flow control to be effective. The research presented in this thesis is motivated by the potential savings in the applications of passive flow control in gas turbine axial compressors by increasing the aerodynamic load of each stage. Increased stage loading that is properly controlled can reduce the number of stages required to achieve the desired pressure compression ratio.

Book The Boundary Layer Behaviour of Highly Loaded Compressor Cascade at Transonic Flow Conditions

Download or read book The Boundary Layer Behaviour of Highly Loaded Compressor Cascade at Transonic Flow Conditions written by H. Hoheisel and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of efficient blade profiles for gas turbine compressors can no longer be effectively carried out through the use of correlations of 2D-cascade data. For the description of the real flow field three dimensional effects have to be taken into account. Modern theoretical calculation methods which involve the determination of blade profile pressure distribution and the associated boundary layer parameters, are now becoming accepted practice. However before the engine designer can have confidence in these new methods the predicted performance must be demonstrated to be in good agreement with experimental data. It is the purpose of the work reported in this contribution to present an accurate set of experimental measurements of blade profile pressure distributions and boundary layer parameters under quasi-3D-flow conditions and to compare these with the predicted performance for a high deflection transonic compressor cascade. It is shown that for conditions near minimum loss incidence the agreement between measured and predicted values is achieved to an adequate engineering standard and that the two most important aspects, choking flow and boundary layer separation (H12> 2.8) are well predicted. Also the data presented could be used to further update and improve the current prediction methods.

Book A Numerical Study of Unsteady Flow Effects in a Supersonic Compressor Cascade

Download or read book A Numerical Study of Unsteady Flow Effects in a Supersonic Compressor Cascade written by Scott M. Richardson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental evidence exists which suggests that compressor cascades operating supersonically may pass a higher mass flow with a periodic inflow condition than with the thermodynamically equivalent mass-averaged steady condition. Since most compressor design methods rely on the use of an axi-symmetric analysis, any excursion in mass flow caused by blade row interactions will not be accounted for in the design. In the present study the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved using the MacCormick explicit algorithm to obtain the flow in a subsonic rotor cascade for both periodic and steady flow inlet conditions. A new outflow boundary condition is presented to model the unsteady cascade exit flow conditions by using localized heat addition to produce a choke point near the downstream boundary. A computational study of the wake model parameters used in the periodic inlet boundary condition is performed to determine their effect on the cascade mass flow swallowing capacity.

Book Active Control of Tip Clearance Flow in Axial Compressors

Download or read book Active Control of Tip Clearance Flow in Axial Compressors written by Jinwoo W. Bae and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) However, achieving overall gain in efficiency appears to be hard; the decrease in loss is only about 30% of the expended flow power from the present SDJ actuator, which is the best among the actuators considered. Guidelines for improving the efficiency of the directed jet actuation are presented. Time-resolved measurements show periodic unsteadiness of the tip clearance vortex with the peak frequency corresponding to the optimum condition for blockage reduction with the NSJ. A physical explanation of the source of the observed periodic unsteadiness is suggested based on trailing vortex instability theory. Observations of the time scale for the unsteadiness from different compressor geometries and flow conditions are shown to scale with a reduced frequency based on convective time through the blade passage.

Book Unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics in Aeronautics

Download or read book Unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics in Aeronautics written by P.G. Tucker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrids is a vibrant research area. This book runs through all the potential unsteady modelling fidelity ranges, from low-order to LES. The latter is probably the highest fidelity for practical aerospace systems modelling. Cutting edge new frontiers are defined. One example of a pressing environmental concern is noise. For the accurate prediction of this, unsteady modelling is needed. Hence computational aeroacoustics is explored. It is also emerging that there is a critical need for coupled simulations. Hence, this area is also considered and the tensions of utilizing such simulations with the already expensive LES. This work has relevance to the general field of CFD and LES and to a wide variety of non-aerospace aerodynamic systems (e.g. cars, submarines, ships, electronics, buildings). Topics treated include unsteady flow techniques; LES and hybrids; general numerical methods; computational aeroacoustics; computational aeroelasticity; coupled simulations and turbulence and its modelling (LES, RANS, transition, VLES, URANS). The volume concludes by pointing forward to future horizons and in particular the industrial use of LES. The writing style is accessible and useful to both academics and industrial practitioners. From the reviews: "Tucker's volume provides a very welcome, concise discussion of current capabilities for simulating and modellng unsteady aerodynamic flows. It covers the various pos sible numerical techniques in good, clear detail and presents a very wide range of practical applications; beautifully illustrated in many cases. A great achievement." Mark Savill FHEA, FRAeS, C.Eng, Professor of Computational Aerodynamics Design & Head of Power & Propulsion Sciences, Department of Power & Propulsion, School of Engineering, Cranfield University, Bedfordshire, U.K. "This is a very useful book with a wide coverage of many aspects in unsteady aerodynamics method development and applications for internal and external flows." L. He, Rolls-Royce/RAEng Chair of Computational Aerothermal Engineering, Oxford University, U.K. "This comprehensive book ranges from classical concepts in both numerical methods and turbulence modelling approaches for the beginner to latest state-of-the-art for the advanced practitioner and constitutes an extremely valuable contribution to the specific Computational Fluid Dynamics literature in Aeronautics. Student and expert alike will benefit greatly by reading it from cover to cover." Sébastien Deck, Onera, Meudon, France
