Book Recent Progress in the Implementation of Active Combustion Control

Download or read book Recent Progress in the Implementation of Active Combustion Control written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active combustion control has received increasing attention for the suppression of pressure oscillations and the extension of flammability limits in dump combustors and premixed combustors with flameholders. In order to accelerate progress in this emerging area, a research program was initiated to improve the physical understanding of combustion dynamics, develop new actuators, and explore new control strategies. This paper describes progress made in the program. The role of shear-flow dynamics in combustion control through experiments and numerical large-eddy simulation has been clarified. New actuators to manipulate the shear layer and increase acoustic level by utilizing periodic chemical energy release have been demonstrated. New control strategies based on neural network, adaptive filter, and modern control synthesis procedures have been implemented.

Book Advances in Critical Flow Dynamics Involving Moving Deformable Structures with Design Applications

Download or read book Advances in Critical Flow Dynamics Involving Moving Deformable Structures with Design Applications written by Marianna Braza and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the latest knowledge concerning critical phenomena arising in fluid-structure interaction due to movement and/or deformation of bodies. The focus of the book is on reporting progress in understanding turbulence and flow control to improve aerodynamic / hydrodynamic performance by reducing drag, increasing lift or thrust and reducing noise under critical conditions that may result in massive separation, strong vortex dynamics, amplification of harmful instabilities (flutter, buffet), and flow -induced vibrations. Theory together with large-scale simulations and experiments have revealed new features of turbulent flow in the boundary layer over bodies and in thin shear layers immediately downstream of separation. New insights into turbulent flow interacting with actively deformable structures, leading to new ways of adapting and controlling the body shape and vibrations to respond to these critical conditions, are investigated. The book covers new features of turbulent flows in boundary layers over wings and in shear layers immediately downstream: studies of natural and artificially generated fluctuations; reduction of noise and drag; and electromechanical conversion topics. Smart actuators as well as how smart designs lead to considerable benefits compared with conventional methods are also extensively discussed. Based on contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium “Critical Flow Dynamics involving Moving/Deformable Structures with Design applications”, held in June 18-22, 2018, in Santorini, Greece, the book provides readers with extensive information about current theories, methods and challenges in flow and turbulence control, and practical knowledge about how to use this information together with smart and bio-inspired design tools to improve aerodynamic and hydrodynamic design and safety.

Book Active Combustion Control

Download or read book Active Combustion Control written by Sungbae Park and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) is a dump combustor, constructed at University of Maryland, so as to reproduce more realistic ramjet conditions. The third is an industrial swirl-stabilized combustor, constructed at University of Cambridge, to mimic realistic industrial gas combustor configurations which typically include large convective time delays, swirl, and on-line changes in the operating conditions. Results obtained from these three configurations show that through an understanding of the underlying physics and reduced-order modeling, one can design an appropriate actuation, sensing and control algorithm, all of which lead to model-based active control that reduces pressure oscillations to background noise.
