Book Understanding Bakhtin Understanding Modernism

Download or read book Understanding Bakhtin Understanding Modernism written by Philippe Birgy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores and illuminates the impact of the Russian philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin on our understanding of literary modernism. This volume explores the subject of modernism as seen through the lens of Bakhtinian criticism and in doing so offers a rounded and up-to-date example of the application of Bakhtinian theory to a field of research. The contributors consider the global spread of modernism and the variety of its manifestations as well as modernism's relationship to popular culture and its collective elaboration, which are dominant concerns in Bakhtin's thinking. As with other volumes in the Understanding Philosophy, Understanding Modernism series, the volume is divided into three parts. Part 1 provides readings of Bakhtin's work in the context of literary modernism. Part 2 features case studies of modernist art and artists and their relation to Bakhtinian theory. The final part provides a glossary of key terms in Bakhtin's work.

Book Resilience assessment of avocado and pineapple value chains

Download or read book Resilience assessment of avocado and pineapple value chains written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations  and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building resilience is important for agrifood systems – such as tropical fruit value chains – to prepare, withstand and adapt to a wide range of risks, including climate and non-climatic shocks and stresses. Resilience is also important to foster transformation of value chains, to both minimize the negative impacts of external risks on the supply chain and also to prevent new operational problems that could compromise the long-term viability of businesses. The FAO-led Building responsible global value chains for the sustainable production and trade of tropical fruits project conducted a comprehensive study during the last quarter of 2022 to identify the main resilience challenges that participants in the avocado and pineapple sectors are facing. The study also aimed to understand the capacities the actors from both value chains possess to prevent, anticipate, absorb, adapt and transform in view of future climate and socioeconomic risks. The report includes the main results from the study, which were validated by the project participants during a workshop held on 6 December 2022. The findings largely draw on literature review and consultations with some of the main actors from the global avocado and pineapple industries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Book Anticipated and Abnormal Plant Transients in Light Water Reactors

Download or read book Anticipated and Abnormal Plant Transients in Light Water Reactors written by Pamela Lassahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 30 years, reactor safety technology has evolved not so much from a need to recover from accidents or incidents, but primarily from many groups in the nuclear community asking hypo thetical, searching (what if) ~uestions. This ~uestioning has indeed paid off in establishing preventive measures for many types of events and potential accidents. Conditions, such as reactivity excursions, large break, loss of coolant, core melt, and contain ment integrity loss, to name a few, were all at one time topics of protracted discussions on hypothesized events. Historically, many of these have become multiyear, large-scale research programs aimed at resolving the "what ifs. " For the topic of anticipated and abnormal plant transients, how ever, the searching ~uestions and the research were not so prolific until the mid-1970s. At that time, probabilistic risk methodolo gies began to tell us we should change our emphasis in reactor safety research and development and focus more on small pipe breaks and plant transients. Three Mile Island punctuated that message in 1979. The plant transient topic area is a multidisciplinary subject involving not only the nuclear, fluid flow, and heat transfer technologies, but also the synergistics of these with the reactor control systems, the safety s;,"stems, operator actions, maintenance and even management and the economic considerations of a given plant.

Book Guidance manual a compilation of actor relevant content extracted from scientific results of the INNOVATE project

Download or read book Guidance manual a compilation of actor relevant content extracted from scientific results of the INNOVATE project written by Siegmund-Schultze, Marianna and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INNOVATE was a comprehensive, collaborative, and binational research project. It ran from January 2012 through December 2016. Brazil and Brazil’s Northeast in particular suffered from a severe drought period from 2012 onwards. Management and governance of natural resources faced serious challenges related to access to water. Important long-term drivers that call for recurrent adaptation of actions are land use change, population growth, climate change, and conflicts from the multiple uses of water. The scientific project addressed this complex situation through research aimed at suggesting practices and pathways towards ecologically and socioeconomically sound management of land, water and biodiversity. The INNOVATE project had one focus on the entire watershed of the São Francisco River and another one on a portion of the watershed – the Itaparica Reservoir and the semi-arid area north of the artificial lake. Researchers with different backgrounds worked within their disciplines, in groups (interdisciplinary) and together with stakeholders (transdisciplinary). The Guidance Manual is a compilation of actor-relevant content extracted from the scientific research results. Most recommendations put forward can be adapted as principles and standards for reservoir and semi-arid regions elsewhere in the world.

Book Preventive Engagement

Download or read book Preventive Engagement written by Paul B. Stares and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States faces an increasingly turbulent world. The risk of violent conflict and other threats to international order presents a vexing dilemma: should the United States remain the principal guarantor of global peace and security with all its considerable commitments and potential pitfalls––not least new and costly military entanglements––that over time diminish its capacity and commitment to play this vital role or, alternatively, should it pull back from the world in the interests of conserving U.S. power, but at the possible cost of even greater threats emerging in the future? Paul B. Stares proposes an innovative and timely strategy—“preventive engagement”—to resolve America’s predicament. This approach entails pursuing three complementary courses of action: promoting policies known to lessen the risk of violent conflict over the long term; anticipating and averting those crises likely to lead to costly military commitments in the medium term; and managing ongoing conflicts in the short term before they escalate further and exert pressure on the United States to intervene. In each of these efforts, forging “preventive partnerships” with a variety of international actors, including the United Nations, regional organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and the business community, is essential. The need to think and act ahead that lies at the heart of a preventive engagement strategy requires the United States to become less shortsighted and reactive. Drawing on successful strategies in other areas, Preventive Engagement provides a detailed and comprehensive blueprint for the United States to shape the future and reduce the potential dangers ahead.
