Book Auguste Laurent and the Prehistory of Valence

Download or read book Auguste Laurent and the Prehistory of Valence written by Mary Eunice Novitski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the French chemists of 1830-1858, and their roles in the development of organic chemistry and its eventual connectin with atomic and valence-bond theory, and uncovers new complexities in the thought processes that led to the concept of valence. The exploration of Laurent's early career reveals that this French chemist had proposed a hyposthesis to explain phenomena due to valence fifteen years before August Kekule's Exposition of the classic valence-bond theory in 1858. Laurent put forward a hypothesis supposing the dividibility of atoms at a time when such a theory was far removed from the possiblity of experimentation. Within the positivist philosophy which prevailed at the time, few besides him would have dared to advance such a hypothesis. Laurent's hypothesis influenced certain advances in his chemistry, and that of his close associate, Charles Gerhardt, and eventually these advances helped turn most chemists to atomism.

Book Professions and the French State 1700 1900

Download or read book Professions and the French State 1700 1900 written by Gerald L. Geison and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays represents the first focused attempt to treat the professions in France as a single large historical problem. It is at once a contribution to the history of the professions and to the social history of France. The essays point toward a common conclusion: in the French context, by striking contrast to standard Anglo-American assumptions, professional "autonomy," power, and success virtually require "dependence" on the state.

Book The Eclectic Legacy

Download or read book The Eclectic Legacy written by John I. Brooks and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a new interpretation of the emergence of scientific psychology and sociology in late-nineteenth-century France. Focusing on their relationship with the philosophy taught in the French education system, the author shows the profound impact on the individuals most responsible for the introduction of the human sciences into the French university - particularly Theodule Ribot, Alfred Espinas, Pierre Janet, and Emile Durkheim. Philosophers helped shape the human sciences by their criticisms of conceptual and methodological problems in the emerging disciplines. The human sciences that emerged were less reductionist and more methodologically sound than they would have been without the vigorous debate with philosophy. This influence is the eclectic legacy of academic philosophy to the human sciences in France.

Book A Taste for Comfort and Status

Download or read book A Taste for Comfort and Status written by Christine Adams and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lamothes were an ordinary family in eighteenth-century Bordeaux. Well-to-do and well respected by their neighbors, they were local notables whose private and public lives suggest the importance of family, kin, and friendship networks, professional activities and cultural interests, as well as a desire to serve the public good. In this portrait of the Lamothes, Christine Adams explores the development of middle-class identity among urban professionals and reconsiders the role of this social group in the coming French Revolution. The most striking feature of this family history is that it is based on more than three hundred personal letters that circulated among the Lamothes&—parents and seven siblings&—over a period of twenty-five years. Such a collection is rare for this period, and Adams makes the most of it. Her study lends remarkable texture to provincial middle-class life. She weaves these letters into every aspect of the Lamothes' experience&—professional, literary, intellectual, social, and civic. She demonstrates a sustained mobilization of all family skills and resources to maintain the status of the males of the family and preserve (rather than risk) the family's emotional and material stability. While their conservative lifestyle suggests that the Lamothes were not &"revolutionary,&" they were, nonetheless, part of the bourgeoisie. Adams thus taps into a potent debate about middle-class consciousness and identity in the eighteenth century, arguing against those historians who doubt that such a social class existed in France before 1789.
