Download or read book Marine Interstitial written by Tomislav Karanovic and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prime function of the interstitial system is the processing of organic material flushed into the sand. It functions as a carbon sink, which has significant implications in this age, in which we are trying to fight carbon levels in the atmosphere. Copepods are top predators here and thus crucially important. This book presents the first data about cyclopoid and poecilostomatoid copepods from the Australian marine interstitial. It includes one new cyclopoid family, the second record of the poecilostomatoid family Polyankyaliidae, one new genus, and 21 new species. A zoogeographic analysis of the copepods recorded emphasizes the importance of looking at small-scale patterns when inferring Gondwanaland biogeography, and a number of distinct zoogeographic regions is now becoming apparent in Australia.

Download or read book Crustacea written by Claude Meisch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-08-08 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ostracoda are small, mostly 0.3-5 mm long crustaceans the body of which is totally enclosed within a carapace consisting of two calcified valves. Only the tips of various appendages protrude through the narrow gap when the valves open. Ostracods are found living in both marine and non-marine environments. They occur in almost every type of freshwater habitats, whether permanent or temporary, epigean or hypogean, stagnant or flowing. They colonize springs, ditches and canals, (rock)pools, slow rivers, man made basins, the aquatic interstitial habitats, cave waters, ponds and lakes where they are found from the shallow littoral down to the great depths of the profundal zone. A number of species are ecologically specialized and are considered indicators of various environmental conditions, mainly temperature, depth and salinity. The present work provides a practical guide to the freshwater and slightly brackish water species recorded in western and central Europe from the British Isles and the northern half of France to the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Keys to all taxa are given. The treatment of each of the 158 species recorded includes descriptions and illustrations of both the carapace and appendages as well as summaries of the ecology, life history, distribution and fossil record. It should be of value to both beginners and experienced workers, freshwater biologists and ecologists.

Download or read book Endemism of subterranean Diacyclops in Korea and Japan with descriptions of seven new species of the languidoides group and redescriptions of D brevifurcus Ishida 2006 and D suoensis Ito 1954 Crustacea Copepoda Cyclopoida written by Tomislav Karanovic and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-02-08 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores for the first time comprehensively the diversity and endemism of subterranean copepod crustaceans from the genus Diacyclops in the Far East. Previous scarce records have indicated presence of only a few widely distributed species, despite relative isolation of subterranean habitats in this part of the world and very dynamic changes in topography during the Pleistocene glacial cycles. A wide range of samples from Korea and Japan are studied, and all previous records of subterranean Diacyclops are re-evaluated. Morphological analyses of microcharacters, many of which are used in cyclopoid taxonomy for the first time herein, reveal high diversity in both countries. No subterranean species is found in common, although the existence of four sibling species pairs is probably indicative of relatively recent speciation. Seven species are described as new to science and two are re-described. This research provides evidence for the importance of subterranean habitats as reservoirs of biodiversity, and also demonstrates the inadequacy of current morphological methods for identifying closely related species of copepods. The disproportionately high diversity and short-range endemism discovered around Lake Biwa provides further evidence for the role of ancient lakes as biodiversity pumps for subterranean habitats.

Download or read book Identification and Ecology of Freshwater Arthropods in the Mediterranean Basin written by Alain Maasri and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identification and Ecology of Freshwater Arthropods in the Mediterranean Basin covers the entire Mediterranean basin, including parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean islands, but excluding other biogeographic locations with Mediterranean climates located outside the region. The book provides an extensive description of the taxonomy and ecology of aquatic arthropods encountered in lentic and lotic habitats, as well as in less studied underground and estuarine habitats. It offers expanded taxonomic identification keys to major groups of arthropods with a description of their ecology and distribution. Keys for insects include aquatic larval stages and water-dwelling adults of Coleoptera and Heteroptera. Additional sections focus on taxa that can be encountered in adjacent brackish and estuary ecosystems as long as the taxon primarily occurs in freshwaters. This is a much-needed, comprehensive resource on the taxonomy and ecology of freshwater arthropods with an introduction to recent molecular tools for identifications. It will be particularly useful for freshwater ecologists, limnologists, environmentalists and students in the ecological sciences. - Presents taxonomic keys to genera and species to the majority of aquatic arthropod families - Provides coverage of all freshwater ecosystems of the Mediterranean basin, with case studies and examples - Includes numerous photographs of the aquatic arthropods described in the chapters - Covers the ecology and taxonomy of organisms living in more traditionally studied lakes and streams as well as in less studied underground and estuarine habitats
Download or read book Invasive Alien Species written by Thammineni Pullaiah and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 1488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES Invasive Alien Species: Observations and Issues from Around the World Volume 1: Issues and Invasions in Africa Invasive alien species are spreading into new ecosystems each year. The impacts caused by these invaders can be swift and devastating. The topic of invasive alien species is large, complex, and globally significant at various scales, exacerbated by the globalization of world economies and increased trade and commerce that has overcome natural barriers to species movement. Invasive alien species threaten global food supplies, water quality and availability, and energy production and delivery. With the added risks associated with global climate change, the global homogenization of plants, animals, and microbes is a major factor in the decline in ecosystem health and ecosystem services worldwide. To counter this trend, there is a critical need to unify governments, cultures, and programs to improve cross-boundary coordination to effectively address the wide range of invasive alien species threats to the environment, economies, and to plant and animal health; particularly human health. This 4-volume work is the first to compile a set of useful material for key topics, to provide a better understanding of the overall global threat of invasive alien species and the diverse array of problems faced around the world, and assemble material that includes potential replicable solutions to overcome these threats. The books also highlight the threat posed by invasive alien species in terms of a global ‘call to action’. Since invasive species know no boundaries, it is our hope that by compiling material from different scientific and social perspectives around the world, and sharing knowledge and examples of a diverse array of associated topics, we can advance global awareness and improve unified national responses to the threat posed by invasive alien species.
