Book excerpt: The handbook is not tied to a particular methodology but keeps in principle to a pronounced methodological pluralism, encompassing all aspects of actual methodology. Moreover it combines diachronic with synchronic-systematic aspects, longitudinal sections with cross-sections (periods such as Old Norse, transition from Old Norse to Early Modern Nordic, Early Modern Nordic 1550-1800 and so on). The description of Nordic language history is built upon a comprehensive collection of linguistic data; it consists of more than 200 articles written by a multitude of authors from Scandinavian and German and English speaking countries. The organization of the book combines a central part on the detailed chronological developments and some chapters of a more general character: chapters on theory and methodology in the beginning and on overlapping spatio-temporal topics in the end.

Book excerpt: The Odin Teatret was founded in 1964 in Norway and for 34 years has been based in Holstebro, Denmark, away from the capital and the centre for theatre. It also tours in other countries. What makes this theatre special in comparison to others, is that "it comprehends theatre as a specific social and spatial reality, often expressed through the metaphor of a monastery, ghetto or exile". The theatre laboratory has many other activities than the mere creation of theatre performances; it also conducts seminars, conferences and meetings with theatre people from around the world. It has published a series of books and magazines about theatre technique and theory and produced films and videos.

Book Epidemiology and Community Psychiatry

Download or read book Epidemiology and Community Psychiatry written by P. Pichot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the World Psychiatric Association is to coordinate the activities of its Member Societies on a world-wide scale and to advance enquiry into the etiology, pathology, and treatment of mental illness. To further this purpose, the Association organizes mono- or multi thematic Regional Symposia in different parts of the world twice a year, and World Congresses dealing with all individual fields of psychiatry once every five or six years. Between these meetings the continuation of the Association's scientific work is assured through the activities of its specialty sections, each covering an important field of psychiatry. The programs of the World Congresses reflect on the one hand the intention to present the coordinating functions of the Association and on the other to open a broad platform for a free exchange of views. Thus, the VII World Congress of Psychiatry, held in Vienna from July 11 to 16, 1983, was composed of two types of scientific events - those structured by the Association and those left to the initiative of the participants. The first type comprised Plenary Sessions, planned by the Scientific Program Committee, anq Section Symposia, organized by the WPA sections; the second embraced Free Symposia, free papers, video sessions, and poster presentations prepared by the participants. Altogether, 10 Plenary Sessions, 52 Section Symposia, and 105 Free Symposia took place, and 78 free papers and poster sessions and 10 video sessions were held.

Book Sociology in Europe

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter
  • Release : 2011-06-01
  • ISBN : 3110887444
  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book Sociology in Europe written by Birgitta Nedelmann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "European Revolution" of 1989 has not only brought about dramatic and far-reaching changes in the social structure of East and West European countries, but also in the social sciences. This volume is an attempt to evaluate how sociology has been affected by this dramatic event and how it has developed in the post-revolutionary period in some selected European countries. Ten eminent representatives of sociology from Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Great Britain, Poland, and Scandinavia were presented with a set of questions which served as a common guideline for their contributions. Their answers can be summarized in the observation of the "interrelated diversity" of sociology in Europe today. The high heterogeneity and fragmentation, typical of contemporary sociological thought in Europe, are interrelated by a high degree of institutionalization and integration of sociology in the European university system. In addition, two prominent scholars from non-European countries, Japan and the US, present their views on sociology in Europe from outside. They declare the end of the period of one-sided flows of reception in sociology and foresee a strengthening of a two-way exchange between European and non-European social scientists in the twenty-first century

Book Insects as Natural Enemies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Jervis
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2005-05-25
  • ISBN : 1402017340
  • Pages : 755 pages

Download or read book Insects as Natural Enemies written by Mark Jervis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-05-25 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades there has been a dramatic increase in theoretical and practical studies on insect natural enemies. The appeal of insect predators, and parasitoids in particular, as research animals derives from the relative ease with which many species may be cultured and experimented with in the laboratory, the simple life cycles of most parasitoids, and the increasing demand for biological pest control. There is now a massive literature on insect natural enemies, so there is a great need for a general text that the enquiring student or research worker can use in deciding on approaches and techniques that are appropriate to the study and evaluation of such insects. This book fulfils that demand. A considerably updated and expanded version of a previous best-seller, it is an account of major aspects of the biology of predators and parasitoids, punctuated with information and advice on which experiments or observations to conduct, and how to carry them out. Guidance is provided, where necessary, on the literature that may need to be consulted on particular topics. While researchers can now refer to several books on parasitoids and predators, Insects as Natural Enemies is unique in emphasising practicalities. It is aimed at students and professional working in universities and both government and commercial institutes in the fields of pest management, agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

Book Exploring Text and Emotions

Download or read book Exploring Text and Emotions written by Patrizia Lombardo and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Text and Emotions investigates the functions, values and effects of emotions in literature and the arts, fostering the affective turn in textual theory and analysis. Fifteen essays on various art works analyse how modern fiction, drama, theatre, poetry and film, as well as Greek tragedy, succeed in both expressing and suggesting a vast and nuanced array of emotions while provoking affective responses in readers and spectators. The volume focuses on the exemplary way in which literature and the arts act upon our minds and have a strong impact on our understanding of aesthetic, political and moral values, challenging, shaping and transforming culture. The volume also intends to show how seminal writers and works have anticipated contemporary theories of emotions and can contribute to their growth. Linking formal, aesthetic and cultural-studies approaches, and combining the latest developments in the affective sciences with the close reading of texts, the volume puts forward a new direction for the study of literature, arts, media and culture.

Book Exploring Textual Action

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anders M Gullestad
  • Publisher : Aarhus Universitetsforlag
  • Release : 2010-12-31
  • ISBN : 8779347266
  • Pages : 440 pages

Download or read book Exploring Textual Action written by Anders M Gullestad and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Textual Action questions how we analyse works of art after the performative turn and shows how the interplay of performativity (textual action), space and topography, and the converging of genres and art forms is essential in modern drama, theatre, prose fiction, poetry and film. The volume also fosters a keen concern for the development of congenial theory. Its 14 detailed essays analyse works of art ranging from Balzac, Melville and George Eliot, to Breton, Kafka, Benjamin, Blixen and Woolf; and from W.C. Williams, Bresson and Scorsese, to Sarraute, Duras, Reygadas, Dumont and Waltz. The approach of these studies discloses the art works as creative and dynamic utterances with active and shaping forces so powerful, and consequential, that they have the potential to transform human perception and blur clear distinctions between art and real life. Using an alternative and dynamic method and suggesting a direction towards the detailed analysis of literature, art, media and culture, Exploring Textual Action addresses current debates within the humanities.

  • Pages : 452 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dr. Engberg-Pedersen shows how a range of problems encountered in twentieth-century interpretation of three major Pauline letters (Philippians, Galatians, Romans) may be overcome by reading the epistles in the light of ancient Stoic ethics. He discusses literary, conceptual and theological issues: for example, the unity and purpose of the letters; the relationship in the letters between theology and ethics; the logical character and shape of Pauline exhortation; the relationship in Paul between cognition and participation; the meaning of righteousness from faith; Paul's handling of the Jewish law. The author illuminates the central core of Paul's thought by applying the Stoic perspective and argues that scholars must move beyond the traditional Judaism/Hellenism divide to reach a comprehensive and accurate reading of Paul's letters"--P.
